My team was a Pixie, Daemon, and King Frost (I played the OG SMTV so I fused those three with full prayers then transfered them). Unfortunately, I chose to just resist their weakness rather than Null or Drain because I forgot to change their skills out
Beating Mastema felt way more satisfying in this game than in SJ, in my opinion. 1- He was going around turning everyone into salt (yes, it was to deprive the Qadistu from Magatsuhi but he only undoes the transformation way after they are dead). 2- He's directly responsible for turning Ichiro into a jerkass. 3- He acts outright elated when Tiamat lays waste on Shinjuku and even wrestles control of her from Yoko in order to kill everyone. 4- He doesn't even pretend to care about anyone but the whole system. Finally they did the "angel of hostility" moniker justice and made him the villain he's supposed to be from the outset.
I like sj mastema because of how he hides his hostility, he's the father of all evil, but was told to make evil by god, so he actively thinks he can do no wrong and is doing good despite his bad actions, all his evil acts are done with divine permission that makes it hard for others to tell they're evil actions until it's too late
For anyone struggling with this, you need to make sure he dies before he gets a turn after gathering Magatsuhi 3 times. Once his AI enters Phase 4, Great Lament and Freikugel come out. The old Taunt + Repel strat works great against him, basically allowing you to ignore Crime and Punishment. You just need to make sure you can burst him down quickly enough.
bro decided to target the Nulls/Repels of my team for 5 turns, and activate Critical when he had 8 turns twice, and then wiped half my team and left the other half in the red in one turn
HOW THE HELL DID I NOT NOTICE THE SMT IV REFERENCE?! Like, IV is my favorite of all of the SMTs, and I've played both parts of the DLC where M comes from! Fake SMT IV fan smh

Remember when the game teached you that exploiting weaknesses or landing critical hits were the keys to take advantage in battle? Yeah, unless you can kill him fast enough, you might actually want to avoid that as much as possible.
