I was so addicted to this album back in 1985. These days I only listen to about half the album. It does sound dated with the keyboards and the drum machine sound. This album was huge back in the 80's. Fair review of this album. Inside Out and Take Me Home are still my favorite songs on this album !
Hi James, first off really solid job with this review. I'm not entirely sure the way you described the writing process was the way all the songs were constructed but there's no doubt this album isn't very organic and compared to his previous two albums this one probably does sound quite dated because of it. Of course being around when it came out and enjoying all these years it's difficult to take away too much from its tremendous success and you did a very good job of explaining how it may sound to you compared to us old farts haha. Frankly I have over the years moved away from this one a bit more myself and prefer "hello, I must be going" and "But Seriously" as his go to albums despite how often I listened to this 30 years ago. Everything has a time and place and some thing stand the test of time better than others. I still have the fondest of memories with these songs and I still enjoy them from time to time. I'm very comfortable with the score you gave it if that means anything from an old dude who's heard it a billion times :). I honesty feel if Phil was to rank his own albums or take a serious unbiased look at his discography I think his opinion would be somewhat similar to yours. I don't think he'd agree with some aspects of your review on song structure and simplicity but I think the easy breezy feeling of the time period is what causes the listener to think that. He'd probably go for "Both Sides" which is a much more personal, deeper album that is far more meaningful and will challenge the listener much greater to anyone willing to take an objective look at the comparisons. I've rambled enough but again very good job here and I hope I've added something to what you already did a great job explaining. Take care James
Hi James :D wow first of thanks for an amazing comment there. Haha :) I'm pleased that our opinions don't differ to much in this. I thought we would be further apart as you have grown up with this album and that you are a bigger Phil Collins fan than me so I'm happy that we are not to far apart on this one. I still think it's a solid fun album overall but some people love to out it very high on a pedestal which is why I may have come across a bit harsh on this album. I don't think all of the tracks where created in the way I said but I do believe most of them where as there where a couple sites I logged on to, to do my research that discribbed tha album being created that way. Anyway it's no bother really as all them songs turned into fun tunes. Haha :) anyway thanks again mate for a great comment and watching the video. I'm pleased you enjoy it. Take care mate :)
I was a bit negative about this review 'cos the age of the reviewer, but after 5:00 he had me. He's very good, so well done for a great recapitulation.
This was the only Phil Collins album I ever owned, but I loved it. I remember having the cassette and listening until I wore it out back in the 80s. Phil Collins unfortunately got so popular that people started dismissing how talented he was. A lot of it was just radio stations overplaying him and not really his fault. I'm glad he was able to come back after taking a break from media exposure. Just curious, have you ever counted how many LPs you own? Quite an impressive collection! I keep wanting to get back into vinyl, but the vinyl records I own are in storage in another country and I now live in a very small apartment so it probably won't be happening any time soon. I am kind of a member of the vinyl community in spirit only, but I love watching your videos.
Is there a way to see your Album-Rankings as a list? I don't recognize most of the albums in your video but want to check out your top ranked albums. Thanks in advance!
My Favorite Phil Collins album! Sounds dated? uh yeah it was made in the 80's all music sounded that way even Eric Clapton's 80's stuff. it's a product of it's time i know i was there lol. great video.
Thanks mate. Yer i think some 80s albums hold better than others and comparing them to claptons stuff I think August from Clapton sounds dated to. Still like both albums they just don't excite me as much as other 80s albums. Take care

It's album of its time and Phil is not too crazy about it nowadays. Nonetheless great review!
Yer. Completely agree. I didn't realise that Phil wasn't crazy about it today though. Take care
Inside out is the best track on this album. It was also used for a bbc2 series in early 1985.
The drum machine used on this album is called a Lynn drum, they were very popular in the 80s.
Thanks James. I have the album but yet to hear it! In your opinion, do you prefer "But Seriously ??

Won 3 Grammys!
Are you going to read his book? It's called Not Dead Yet and comes out year the end of October.
I thought No Jacket Required was dated even in 1985!
