Great review! I definitely agree with most of your scores. I find this to be a very underrated solo album by Phil. Not many people bring it up when discussing Phil's solo work. Personally, I like this album more than Face Value. Regarding "Thru These Walls," do you get the feeling the Phil was giving a wink and nod to Peter Gabriel? "Thru These Walls" sounds like it would fit on Gabriel's 3rd album. I am specifically thinking of the song "Intruder" when listening to "Thru These Walls."
I'm not sure if it's just me and dark depressing albums or what but I think this is Phil's best album overall. It was the 2nd CD I ever purchased and I remember how excited I was to upgrade from my cassette. You did a good job of explaining the overall mood and tempo of this album, which is very direct and frankly sort of in your face aimed at his ex. Obviously he didn't care anymore (no pun intended) and sort of let it all out. "It don't matter to me", although a very soulful song, also has very dark lyrics basically saying, whatever bitch, it doesn't matter anymore. "I Cannot Believe it's True" is again, dark, saying I just can't believe you did this! "Through These Walls" well you know exactly what that's about, cheater got caught song basically. Well I just love it, and although I think "You Can't Hurry Love" is the one misfit on this album that just doesn't suit the atmosphere of the record, although a great single, and obviously a huge hit for Phil, it just doesn't really belong on this album IMO.. I've never heard anyone describe "Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away" as "fun" haha.. It's really not meant to be a fun song lol, "Why Can't it Wait til Morning" just is heartbreaking and touching. Such a sad song but still sort of like a closing statement really just wishing things could have worked out differently. I think anyone who just sits and reads the lyrics would be able to appreciate this record even more. I just love it, a real masterpiece for me. Really good job with the review mate, slightly lower score than I'd give it, but I think I appreciate break up albums more than you haha. Take care James
