The MAIN feature I’m hoping for on the Z8 & Z9 is pre-capture RAW. They’re phenomenal cameras already and easily as powerful, if not more powerful, than some of other brand cameras with pre capture RAW
I don't have any more Nikon's left. In fact no more Sony's or any gear left at all. Not even one digital cam. Fell on some hard times. But I love your channel. You have a cool job and hobby, getting to play with some cool gear and then get to take images as well ❤️🩹. Plus you seem like a solid Australian dude. When times get better for me and I get back on my feet I'll likely buy a Z6 or a older DSLR (maybe even a D700 or both). Then get some great F Mount primes! I miss the Nikon everything. Just a good ecosystem with style, reliability, performance, handling, best colors, and all by a company that actually cares about taking care of the customer. Cheers Matt!
I've had the Z9 now for nearly 3 years. As a wildlife photographer, I couldn't have asked for a better camera. Been playing around with video lately, so this update is well timed !! Merry Christmas and all the best to you and yours for the New Year........
Damn, I wanted to be first! It’s been great how Nikon has been supporting these mirrorless cameras over the years. My Z9 has been like having a new camera several times over. Great channel Matt, always look forward to your posts.
Funny, as soon as I saw the leaked firmware photos from Japan, I sent them to my buddy at Nikon saying "shutter angle when????" and he claimed ignorance telling me to ask the NPS team. I've been waiting for this update literally since the camera came out, and I'm SO happy it's finally here.
Why do we keep using "shutter angle" instead of exposure time in this digital age? It was relevant in the past when exposure time in movie related to shutter opening angle AND frames per second. Higher frame rates with the same angle give a shorter exposure time in film. In digital we can just reference the actual exposure time. Just a way to create an "us & them" or "insiders versus outsiders" subculture? There is no actually physically rotating or butterfly shutter any longer. Shoot 60 FPS and you never can go longer than ~1/6o sec, but you should be able to use any shorter exposure. Will you like the result? If there is no subtle motion blur? And your takes become jittery? Probably not, but how it looks also depends on the software you use to render and how its lossy data compression works.
Thanks for the heads up Matt. I know this got teased by mistake a couple of weeks ago with no release date attached so good to know the update is live. For those of us that shoot video with the Z9, having shutter angle is one of those basics which makes life much easier-particularly in complex environments where you may want to switch back and forth between slo-mo capture and a standard frame rate. The shutter speed is always aligned and becomes one less setting to manage when you’re trying to make quick video settings changes.
Thanks Matt! I’ve just updated my Z9 and D500 happily. Well done for not mentioning the missing Pixel Shift😅. It’s impressive that Nikon is also still updating firmware for a 2016 camera! (The latter is only a WiFi password change so I can’t see this having any bearing on a Z500 etc).
was really hoping flexible picture control/nikon imaging cloud would arrive to the Z9 - this would potentially mean, that other exspeed 7 cameras (i.e., nikon zf) would also inherit it. it seems like this would've been the perfect firmware update to introduce it, but who knows at this point
Yet another firmware update! Very happy with these new features. Shutter angles are a great shortcut to getting the right shutter speeds. Great addition. Especially action in low lighting. Cool shortcut. The histogram and waveform inclusion is great for wildlife stuff. Very happy with it. I’m already using histograms, and this is a good step forward. It’ll help me film in difficult situations. Thanks for the update Matt. Thanks for the update Nikon. Ps. I’m going to give the hi res zoom collab a go with the 12-24 DX PZ zoom lens. :-) that’s all I have.
@@josephsworkshop75 For now, hi res zoom collab will only be enabled when the 28-135 PZ lens is attached to the Z9. See page 92 in the supplemental firmware update reference guide.
Thanks Nikon, great update! now please do the follwing: Bird AF for Z6 III , Shaow Flicker fix in video? ( didn't see it very much but it will shush people and help sales :) ) Open Gate for Z8 / Z9 / Z6 III . pre-capture RAW - would be a bonus ( if you do it in the Z9 II I will forgive you) That's it! other than than perfect.
The Z8 is basiclly a Z9 , and they introduced the Z6 III as Video cetric camera , don't see any reason why they won't add them. I own both the Z9 and Z6 III , since I take the Z6 as my go to video more , I hope as much as you.
I'm very happy about the new updates on the Z9. I just hope that Nikon doesn't forget about the updates to the Z6III because it needs several things like bird detection and more.
With the acquisition of Red, the launch of their luts, the announcement of the power zoom lens and now this firmware update seems to suggest where Nikon is focusing their energies for the future.
For me it's the most important that freezing the camera during sending to FTP on bad networks fix is there. It is so so annoying and now it should finally be fixed after looong months. Finally.
In deciding between z8 and z9 someone from Nikon Aus told me to go z8 if video was my focus. So if z8 doesn't get shutter angles I'm going to be most put out
I have been extremely happy with the Z9 from the first day I had it (several months after it was released into the wild). The firmware updates have just made it better and better. My only lament is that there have been no firmware or other ware releases to update me. Rather than improvements, unfortunately, my capabilities seem to be going in the other direction.
Thanks for a great video. Customizable camera sounds option would be great. Just for fun. And also very rarely my Z9 viewfinder and LCD goes black with no reason, very rarely, but that happens. I hope Nikon is aware of that bug or whatever that is and fixed that.
I am not asking for more. 3 years with the Z9 has seen continuous updates and it’s actually been enjoyable to see new features being released. My take on the in development of the Expeed 8 is that it will be aimed at making more options possible. Video in the Z9 is already way more than I need.
Wonder what the real-use difference between the 2 zoom modes are. The sony (clearzoom) works very well but doing it synced would make the transition point easier to hide. Maybe that works less for some lenses so they also support the only one moment to switch makes sense?
That's very true that people need to realize that the camera you bought is the camera you bought. YOu wouldn't believe the number of people who are li ke "I hope the Z6 III get X feature that the Z8 has". It may, but it may not. NIkon does this to differentiate. "Well, I'd like to see that feature for the Z6 III because it will be useful to me!" Well, why didn't you just buy a Z8? etc. But seriously the only two features I'm really looking for (and maybe they will come to the Z8 and Z9) is some sort of RAW option for pre-release, even if it's HE compressed RAW. The video features I can understand that they may not come to the Z8 simply because while the Z8 can shoot 8k, the Z9 can do a better job (from an overheating standpoint it seems). Not that these features are related to that. Although I do think that the Z8 will get a firmware update soon as well to support some of these new lenses and perhaps at least a few of the new features of the Z9 but again, not all of them as Nikon will want to keep the two differentiated through firmware (since the two are mostly identical in terms of hardware minus the built-in grip and second CFE card slot on the Z9).
The ONE thing I have been waiting for and praying for is Pre-Capture in RAW, however, as this still hasn't happened I suspect Nikon are holding it back for the Z9ii to try topush us to purchase the next camera as and when it is launched. I get it, they need to ensure there are significant benefits over the current product to persuade us that we need to upgrade. Sadly, at my time of life and financial position, that ain't going to happen!! The Z9 and Z8 are pretty well perfect for my needs and will have to see me out - but I really would love to have that facility!!
Since sony had a release a new camera for allowing pre-cap in raw i suspect nikon has todo the same. Somewhere in the cpu or transport more is needed to be raw.
Nice for vid but I’d like to see further AF development to keep pace with Canon and Sony. Though I half wonder at this point if Nikon doesn’t push bigger AF development into a Z9II vs a 3yr old body.
I was one of those that dreamed and begged for shutter angle since release and now Nikon have given me a wonderful early Christmas present! 🥳👏🏾👍🏾🙏🏾 The wave form add-ons are the icing on the cake! I said that with the release of the Z9, Nikon were only getting started and everything that they have released and done since then makes me double down on that this is not ending any time soon! Here’s hoping that my Z6III will join my Z9 with these new video features! Well done Nikon my wallet is ready for even more! 😂😎🔥. 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
Excellent and informative video Matt... Hey Matt I've got a question 🙋🏿♂️? It’s photography related. Why doesn't the Nikon Z9 (and Z8) offer the 5x4 in camera crop mode? Like the Nikon D850 and other Nikon models did.
Hello Matt, thanks for the update. But not in the UK as the web site is down? wether that is planed or had crashed every wants the Z9 firmware. What about Nikon making a lense like the Fujinon 80mm-2000mm I bet that would be one costly lens.
"the camera that you bought is the camera that you bought". Fair enough. But I'm one of those picky people who wants RAW pre-capture. Pre-capture wasn't even a "thing", then. But if you use it a lot (7 I do), it's really wanted. And yes, I would trade in my Z9 for a Z9II if it had the feature. Cheers.
I made the mistake of borrowing a Z8 to play with Pixel Shift. After a lot of phaffing around I got it to work and I found it to be so useful for architectural subjects. It was never really an absolute need, but it certainly became an 'I WANT'. I gave the Z8 back and tapped my fingers in the hope that P.Shift would come to my Z9. Alas NO. Now an expensive venture into P.Shift to purchase a Z8 just for that privilege..,.. I'm not crying....I'm just a little upset.......,
Still no firmware updates for Z6ii/Z7ii. I'm pretty sure i left this same comment over a year ago. At least you're honorable, and don't delete comments. Nikon left us high and dry. I still don't believe that they couldn't squeeze a little bit more out of dual processors. I'm on the conspiracy side till proven otherwise. It's not like we can benchmark the limits of 2x Expeed 6's vs 1 Expeed 7. Whatever. Carry on.
Also added in this update is customisable Zebra pattern colours !!! 🦓Go Zebra's - go patterns - go colour !
Zebras remain video only. Still want this feature for still images.
Rainbows zebra
@@JayBlue2U strange to not include this for stills, it can't be a leap from video to stills.
