Whatever the Z5ii does or does not offer, I personally would prefer a flip-out screen because I frequently use it tripod-mounted in portrait orientation, and at some odd angles for architecture and a fully articulating screen is far better for that scenario.

I am going to be shaming my devils here.
I used to be a mega pixel person. All I cared about was how many mega pixels I could get from my camera. Then I got an a77 from Sony. I realized that 24MP was great with no buffer and I do mean no buffer. I think that camera would have been better with a larger buffer. Sony did as well when they dropped the a77ii. They fixed the buffer issue.
So I do hope that Nikon focused on features and CPU performance over sensor pixel count. 😊
Please do comment and give me your inputs. I would like to hear what people have to say about my points.

For me the Z5II need to be the cheapest possible entry to the full frame Z ecosystem, so:
    - Body: Same body from the Z5, same sensor too, same two card slots, maybe a flip forward screen would be better for most people. Using the same body of Z5 help cutting costs.
    - Video: Expeed7 with all the benefits of having that powerful processor in video, AF, etc. I know the sensor is somewhat slow, but if you can get 4k 60p without crop and 1080 240fps would be great. No need for raw video, maybe only Nlog. Even if only 8bit no log, but the important point are the resolution and frame rates without crop for an entry level camera. Some line skipping mode to reduce rolling shutter if needed.
    - Photo: faster photo experience, faster and more accurate AF, more frames per second. Nothing more, like the dynamic range, noise, etc, if the same as Z5 I'll be happy
    - Price: it's the key. The Z5II need to compete in price with the R8 and A7C

As a serious hobbyist bird photographer I feel there is a hole in the Nikon Z lineup. Right where the D500 was in the DSLR product line.
I'm not advocating for a Z body crop frame sensor, but a full frame 33mp sensor. Partially stacked with an Expeed 7 processor and weather sealed. 33 mp would yield more cropable files but not cause an immediate need for computer upgrades and more storage. Seems to me that would tap into a large prosumer market and more likely to be a financial success than a 60 MP or larger sensor that would only appeal to a small market segment.

I currently own both the Z8 and Z9, but as a previous owner of a Z7ii, I would want a similar form factor to the Z7ii, but improvement in: frame rate, EVF resolution and brightness, EVF blackout, rolling shutter, and autofocus similar to the later full frame Nikon cameras. We've reached a point where supercar-level specs and technology are becoming the norm, with cameras offering far more than most people need or can fully utilize. The majority of debate now seems to largely center on having the car take over responsibilities that traditionally belonged to the driver. Still, knowledge and skill remain the most important "specs" of all.

I'm hoping for the Nikon DL 24-85mm :).
Seriously, I think there is a market for advanced compacts. Though I'd hope for a bit more range on the zoom. And proper controls, so not the consumer wheel of death on the back, but proper 4-way buttons doubling up as a D-pad, and a separate control dial located near the top. In fact I'd be over the moon if they recycle the Coolpix P7800 body. Maybe make it a bit smaller but keep the extensive controls, or at least most of them.
If I'd had my way this camera would have:
      - Body of the Coolpix P7800 (as I said).
      - Lens of the Canon G5X II, including its awesome close focus abilities.
      - Sensor of the Sony RX100 V.
      - Autofocus of any of the big three.
Give it a good EVF and make it responsive and a joy to use. I’d probably buy one.

Hi Matt, As you described, at the moment , full-frame resolution has reached a technical plateau. No clear room for a Z7iii in a full- frame sensor. To me, the growth area for innovation and sales is where Hasselblad X2D and Fuji Film GFX have set up their bid for demanding high-resolution customers; medium format. As you pointed out, 80 / 100 MP full frame would seem to have too many compromises.

  • @cdavey7654
    @cdavey7654 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

I prefer a smaller/lighter camera body, so I would be very interested in a well spec’d z7III - I’d prefer a bit more than 45MP (currently own a 61MP a7RIV and am fairly happy with that), though much over 60MP (on a full frame sensor) can be issue with diffraction, as you mentioned. I’d hope that the z7III could be Partially-Stacked sensor similar to z6III - that, if combined with a sensor that was 45-60MP range could be a really nice camera.
Not loving the idea of a huge heavy camera since I do a lot of hiking etc (that is the main reason I sold my D750), so the z8 while it has some nice specs, would not be my first choice (size/weight wise).. and the z9, heck no, that thing is mammoth… If I was going to get a larger camera, I’d buy a medium format 100+MP system. - I shoot mostly landscape, if you didn’t guess that already. 🙂

@cdavey7654 I agree with you re the Z8, it's a great camera but not for landscapes, it's too big. I hope they do make the Z7 III with some of the specs you mentioned. As you mentioned; .. a Z-7III perhaps sits in an occupied spot? I agree, 45Mp is a very good workable sweet spot. RAW pre-capture would be something that I would hold out for. I think I will wait until the Z9 II specks are released. If a Z7 III fills all my not so large parameters, I will jump that way. I won't speculate.

I started into "pro" Nikon gear in 1975, with a (film) F 2. (I'm not a professional, but appreciate the best gear, when I can afford it.) The entire ride since then has included consistently-tough and useful equipment, interesting tech developments, and more precision, in general. Basically, Nikon has spoiled me. I got my Z9 about 3 months after it's release, and it's not only impressive in general, but seems to have more features and capabilities than I can even use. But... That's cool, because whatever we consider high-tech, high-res, high-speed, etc., today, can look quite different in the future. I'm in! :)

I don't think the z5 will get much of an update aside from the processor. It may get some new video features and maybe the picture control button on top the z50 II has. The z7 III is conundrum. Let's go back and look at what the z7 was originally. It was the mirrorless version of the d850. The z7 II was an improvement. The z8 is the true replacement for the d850. Other than the price point, do we even need a z7 III? There are no cameras with 24 mp after the z6 III so they put a partially stacked sensor in it. Will they do the same for a z7 III? How close can they let it be to the z8? I think it would still have a mechanical shutter and electronic in silent mode but with rolling shutter. It would have the new processor with tracking modes. I don't see it being more than 45 mp. It will either be a cheaper version of a z8 with less features or it will have to be in a category of is own. I've even heard people speculate that it could be a medium format camera like the GFX50. They say the z lenses would cover a sensor that size. It could be a landscape, portrait and product photography camera. But i don't see that happening either. I got into photography 7 years ago. The d850 was just coming out. Since then the z7, z7 II and the z8 have all come out within that time frame. That's a lot of change in that time.

You mentioned upscaling the Fujifilm 40Mp sensor to a circa 100Mp sensor, which is a valid possibility. An interesting possibility overlooked is upscaling the 26Mp stacked sensor from the X-H2s, to a 60 odd Mp fast read out stacked sensor option. With development over the last few years, a 60 Mp plus stacked, fast read out sensor as quick or quicker than the Z8/9 is a distinct possibility, particularly from Sony. If Nikon use that for anything is another question.

I think the likely specs for a Z9II will be the same stacked sensor, next gen processing (either two E7's or one E8), 30fps LC RAW, pre-capture LC RAW, overall improved AF, CF-B 4.0 support and practically unlimited buffer for all burst modes, perhaps some video improvements but not much, and priced at $6k or less. A Z5II would just get mostly incremental updates in FPS, buffer speed, and video. Not sure there will be a Z7III, as there is just no space in the lineup for a camera like that pricewise. If they did release it, it would have to be 60MP+ to compete with the A7R5.

I like to see Nikon to re engineer the sensor on the D810, that has that 36.3 pixel, make it stacked and load it with all the bells & whistles close to the Z8. Create a new universal flip screen. This I think will appeal more across genres because it gets all areas covered. I do believe Pre Capture Raw will come across all Expeed 7 bodies onces Nikon does all the Beta testing. We must remember, the higher pixel count comes, the higher it eats into your CF Express card. There's no telling what other RED features are there that could be incorporated into existing bodies? For me there are 2 things I dream of seing Nikon do...first is to have " in body focus stacking" and the 2nd is seing the Z lenses having variable ND's on them? I know the latter is wishful thinking but who knows....it could happened?

I would not want a global shutter-only camera given its likely limitations but a hybrid sensor would be badass and would love to see it in the Z9II. I don't often shoot RAW so pre-release in RAW is not a huge deal to me. I do use pre-release quite a bit and being able to do FINE L at 120fps would be outstanding for my use case.

I bought my Z7 to use as a studio type camera. It is perfect for that kind of work! I think the Z7 line needs to continue excelling as a studio camera-so with that said, a Z7III should be 63MP with the same dynamic range as the original Z7 sensor. It doesn’t really need much improvement on video (except maybe unrestricted record time) because that’s what the Z6III is for. I’m ok with the future Z8 and Z9 staying 45MP as long as the sensor continues to improve on dynamic range and speed.

Matt, now that Nikon’s Z lineup is well rounded (with capable bodies) I think a 5-year cycle is more than good enough. A ZIII only makes sense if offers something not already in the lineup, a high pixel count portrait, product, landscape and architecture body where slow frame rates isn’t a problem, makes sense, at least to me. While something that will never worry me a global shutter capable z9II would give it some additional differential against the Z8.

I really hope they can put pre-capture in the Z9, because I'd rather spend my money on some nice long Nikon glass than having to upgrade the body so I can catch those damn fast little birds before they fly out of frame in a split second. One thing I'd LOVE is some system to group burst of images so it's easy to choose which frames to keep each pass of the shutter. It could probably be done by the likes of Adobe etc, Currently culling images can be a drag with 20fps and a good wildlife photography session, where you end up with SO many shots.

I am primarily a Landscape, Portrait, and macro (including food and product) photographer. I am not looking for speed or high-end video capabilities, Size matters a lot to me (especially when hiking). I would love to see a z7iii with the latest chipset, a 60 MP partially stacked sensor, improved autofocus (especially for portrait), and possibly a second USB-C port for power like the Z8. The extra pixel size would be great when I don't want to hike with a heavy telephoto lens ( I can crop instead).

So for me, I love my Z9. I also loved my D800 and D850 when i was shooting with them. What would I want to see come out in the future? This is just my opinion, but it is what I would like to have. I would like to see a Z6iiiA for astrophotography with incredible HD range and very low noise at higher ISO. It would be easier to do lower noise in a 24MP camera than a 45MP. Frame rate does not matter. Just cut the noise. I would also love to have a Z8ii with a native ISO of 32 or lower with incredibly HD range for those of us who want to be able to shoot incredibly detailed images from a tripod of nature, sunrises, sunsets, long exposure where frame also does not matter. Higher MP? Maybe, but the lower native ISO would take precedence. Give me sharp, give me details, give me high dynamic range, give me better manual shutter speed controls for long exposure.

    Hi Matt. Nice video!
What about different sorts of innovations besides just more of the same (i.e. faster FPS, processing, video etc.). Maybe they start to add computational photography into the mix - imagine how good low light could be if our Nikons had the same computational tech that our Iphones do- they would then blow phones away if they were competing on an even playing field for the software but with such larger and superior sensors and optics.
Also, what about anti-theft tech - why not have an option to use a fingerprint or retina scan to 'unlock' the camera so that without the key it is a brick that has no value to anyone - kind of like Iphones today?
Obviously, better upload to the cloud is welcome - they are working on this but get it to a point it is seemless and very easy to use, and at the same time, maybe put encryption on the files (or an option to use encryption) where if someone got your CFE card they could not read your files.
These sorts of things in addition to the 'speed' upgrades you mention could make for an interesting new generation of cameras.
    Just a thought :)

What you describe are features that would make me avoid a camera and not upgrade, the main one being anti-theft. Putting anti-theft functionality into a camera would not only be an inconvenience and a liability, It simply wouldn't deter theft. Cars, phones, computers, etc. all have anti-theft technology and it doesn't stop or even slow down those intent on making a quick buck. 11,000 phones (2022) are lost/stolen every day, despite the fact they can be tracked, have password/fingerprint security and can be remotely wiped and locked. I don't want a camera that is going to inconvenience me more than a thief.

      @photographydiscourse1185 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@mozzman Hi Mozzman - I understand your POV - I guess I wasn't clear - seems to me all the things I was imagining can all be turned on or off so they would all be optional and if you didn't want to use them you would not have to.
In spite of what you said, I do believe that way less phones are stolen than would be the case if there were no security.
Nevertheless, I was not suggesting any of these things in lieu of what Matt was talking about, but rather in addition to and again they can all be on/off options.
      Happy Holidays.

Been thinking about a practical (low capex, new market) option: make a high resolution zf by replacing the sensor with the z7 / d850 sensor. That would give a path for anyone who likes the retro feel but wants more mp. Maybe ... and I mean maybe, revise the ibis to the locking version in the z6iii, but that would be a bonus. Without that it's probably about the least amount of investment to gain some additional marketshare, and doubles as a way to continue profiting from the high sunk costs of both the older 45 mp sensor and the zf.

The only thing that kept me away from the Z7II was the unreliable AF. In terms of dynamic range it already outperforms the Z8/Z9.
Pixel shift might be a usable solution for even higher resolution landscape images. Cramming more than ~50 MP into a FF sensor is really not beneficial for image quality.

I myself would love to have some minor things like more cropmodes, e.g. 4 by 5 or 3 by 4 (or even customizable crop modes) and I would like the crop modes to be "non destructive" like they are in Fuji cameras. I guess that would be possible via firmware.

I have used it in JPG and would of love the images to of been in RAW. and may be a higher dot EVF but I am more then happy with what I have. So why not have a Z9VH using the sensor from Red, making it move of a video/high speed camera the the Z9 a stills camer that can shoot video. As for the Z7iii I had the Z7ii and that need focusing speed and would need a jump to 80mp senior, as you say on a small senior like the ff seniors may be more trouble than its worth.

Had a rep tell about a month ago that a Z5 II was a possibility (actually came up while we were talking about hte Z50 II and how they needed to do a "Z80" instead). But I think we all know that a Z9 II is quite possible next year sometime (probably by the end of the year). Now, a Z5 II doesn't really make a lot of sense the way the guy described it to me (he said an Expeed 7 processor and new sensor perhaps 24MP-30MP but that it would still sit below the Z6 III in terms of features and performance).

I have a bad feeling Nikon may just upgrade the processor to Expeed 7, tweak the body design (likely flippy screen), and that will be it for the Z5II to keep the price point. Basically, similar to Z50II updates. Unfortunately, it means stretching the old D750 sensor another generation.
What I really want is a Zf in a new body, but that would likely raise the price point, and not sure Nikon will do that.

I suppose to stay competitive with the other flagships Nikon will have to introduce a Z9 update with faster data processing and internal bandwidth to allow for RAW precapture and hopefully they can add some of the AI subject tracking found in Sony and Canon cameras. But it’s not like the current Z9 looks or feels behind the times. For the money the value is incredible and in the hybrid video space it’s still a powerhouse. Like the a1II, I don’t expect a Z9II to be a big leap forward in any category, rather refinements to an already potent camera.

It could either have the tilt screen or the articulating screen, it does not matter for this camera. Price is between $3,000 to $3,200 USD.
