All-new Suzuki Fronx Review - Is this the best Budget Crossover on the market?

Suzuki continues to storm the sales charts in South Africa and there's very little doubt in our minds that despite its bizarre name, the Fronx is going to be another hit for the brand.
While it is based on the Baleno platform, the Fronx offers much more than its hatchback stablemate, as our video journalist Ciro De Siena found out during his week-long drive with the car.
In this in-depth review, we take a look at the price of the Suzuki Fronx in South Africa, the engine and transmissions available, the interior spec and features of this GLX model, the rear seat amenities and boot/cargo space.

Interior and features is same but the exterior? Nah way different and Fronx design is 🔥🔥
From an owner's perspective.
Positives: Great over rougher roads, with comfortable suspension. Feels solid when cornering. Fuel consumption is relatively good. Beautiful design (side profile especially). Great sound system. Suzuki warranty and service plan is great. Responsive infotainment. LOTS of rear legroom. It's almost impossible to get traffic fines with this engine.
Negatives: No (turbo) power, which sucks on an incline. Small fuel tank (37l) means you have to really plan a long distance trip well. Boot space = that of a polo. Maroon interior. No auto lock. Safety belt warning noise. Aircon a bit poor in very hot conditions
Have you had any issues with the Bluetooth connectivity to your phone (if your phone is not an Apple)?
How does it compare with Toyota Raize?

I test drive a Fronx manual and Automatic. The Automatic was sooo slow. It struggle on a small incline and the manual wasn't that great on an incline either. The Baleno which have the more boot space and weighs 500kg less would do much better I think since it has the same engine.
I did a little research. Apparently the Fronx has an amazing story. In this vehicle Suzuki crossed a frontier in the market segment. Half SUV/Half Coupe. The X represents a crossover. Hence Frontier Crossover or FronX

Thanks Ciro. Ordered a GLX auto. It also does well on bad roads. Led lights, 360 degree camera at this price. I rate Suzuki minimised the price as they know they will sell a lot of these cars. It will have people seriously think twice about buying a VW Polo. Oh and a name? Suzuki X-Cape. Thanks man. ❤

The Suzuki Fronx is already a massive hit. Only 2 weeks in the market and it sold over 300 units already.
It would do even better if toyota were to copy and paste it.

This car is honestly amazing for the price. The features is insane. And the LED lights are stunning. It makes everything else feel cheap and overpriced. The Hyundai Venue is awful in comparison and the new Ford Puma is double the price. Loving what Suzuki is doing.
Sadly the Poooma is only "new" to our market, it is old everywhere else.
This is it, features, practicality and reliability. Almost perfect

Excellent car. Got my GLX now 2 weeks and love it. Average 16km/l in city driving with average 19.5km/l on highway driving. Very comfortable and quiet interior. Actually comes with a 4 year service plan included! True value for money.

Best review ever, been searching for a car for a while and I pretty much got everything I wanted from your review. I enjoyed the part where you compare the other cars in the segment as well. I was eyeing the T-Cross, but the Fronx ticks the boxes, its unfortunate it has a terrible name.
Naturally Aspirated (NA) for the win! Simplicity, reliability, character, great sound, fuel economy! It is awesome that some manufacturers like Suzuki still offer NA engines, and with port injection!

I saw a fronx in our parking lot at work, and it really drew my attention. Immediately, I went to google it and was quite surprised by the price! I'm a suzuki fan now. Swopped the bmw and merc for a swift sport and jimny!

It’s def a weird name. I made it a verb among my friends at work (e.g. “I’ve been fronxing” meaning focusing on other things besides work/being distracted)😅

Thanks for that great review! 👍🏻 I'm fine with the name. I like the way the car looks, that rear led joining both the tail lights is a premium touch. I'm an ex VW fan here. I'm glad Suzuki is making waves. Vw reached a point extending beyond snob appeal, so their days topping the sales Charts were definitely numbered. The only thing the Suzuki/Hyundai/Kia brands miss in the South African market is a sunroof option because in SA the so-called city cars or runabouts are our complete personal or family car for long or short drives and we'd like to have a little extra luxury in an affordable car. The Chinese makers are offering this and you see this translating into sales.

Spot on! When he said there is nothing else I kept thinking SUNROOF. It’s a dealbreaker for some people. The brands you mentioned really need to consider this cos it’s an option with the Chinese brands such as Cherry.

When I first heard the name i thought they had to be joking. Now it's starting to grow on me.
They sell this with the 1.0 litre K10C turbo engine in India. The top spec variant has a 6 speed Torque converter.
It will sell. It has the looks, and that's not necessarily a requirement in this segment for a car to sell

Loved to death my 2.5l V6 GV , love our new hybrid S-Cross. I even managed to get my wife to love this brand.
I just hope they keep their approach in the future, I've had enough with the German cars dark ego, here in Europe.

Fronx is Frontier Next..so I was told by Suzuki in George..Had look at one and thinking of trading my Urban Cruiser in..Toyota are bringing there Fronx equivalent out soon..The Magnite and Kiger can't compare to Fronx in every way especially Quality and materials . Excellent warranty and service plan and I think Suzuki are going to clean up with this.Only issue I thought was noisy engine but not a deal breaker

We have a Baleno GLX Manual and when the Fronx was released I drove it and must say while the cars are quite similar, they are not the same. The Fronx does feel a little better. Basically, the only reason why my wife and I didn't pull the trigger on trading in the Baleno was the name lol it really really was a deal breaker.

This Suzuki Fronx just arrive here in Barbados and is creating serious attention. I just retired from work and shopping for an affordable vehicle. My eyes on the Nissan Kicks, Toyota Yaris Cross, RAIZE and Kia. Seeing this beautiful vehicle I don't want to see the others. Love the name FRONX. But it could be Suzuki COMBO or Suzuki Special

Great review, Ciro! My only gripe with this car is the small fuel tank. 37L vs 48L in the previous Vitara Brezza. You'll do an extra 125km on a road trip in the Brezza which is quite substantial.

The 40L tank on my Jimny was also a major negative, until I got a 80L tank fitted. Nów it can overland! 😁
At 5.5 lt / 100km I can live with a 37lt tank

Fronx is really a nice name. Great choice. Let me explain, this car will evolve. Remember cars have a trunk. If the trunk is at the front it is called a Fronk. I think this car in inspired from exactly just that. ❤
I agree, some Suzuki vehicles just have the worst names (Swace and Across anyone?). I think they should have called the car the Suzuki Vibe based on some of the marketing matireals ive seen.
On the car itself, yes its going to be a hit despite not getting the Turbo they get in India. This has all the best bits of the Baleno with a higher ground clearance which people want at a competitive price. Also the boot of the Grand Vitara is very dissapointing considering the size of the car. The Vitara which is a smaller car in evrey demension has a bigger boot when measured in both reality and litres. Major differences include the AWD in the Grand Vitara, the 360 camera, ambient lighting, leather upholterty for the seats,and better rear seats.
Finally Ciro you are correct, the only car that really competes with this is the comfort trim of the Chery Tiggo 4pro with the NA engine. Both are good options and the best advice is to drill down the features and drive both.

New Urban Cruiser has been out for a few months already. Its a rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara just a bit more expensive with less of a warrantee and service plan (half to be exact). Also more expensive to insure. Not worth it unless you dont live near a Suzuki dealership. Just get the Suzuki.

Great review. Though I can tell you that up here at Gauteng altitude this motor struggles to keep up on the highways and freeways. Around town it's fine. Longer trips are going to be painful

Did a trip with 3 adults and luggage to MP and the lack of torque/power was very telling on the freeway and trying to get around the hills of Sabi was excruciating. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Suzuki fan but we deserve the great 1l turbo I've experienced in Oz

Question: Is the engine and gearbox combo decent on long distance trips since when you reviewed the Suzuki Jimny with same engine, you mentioned it needed an extra gear on highways and really over revved. Is this car better on the gearing side?
Cruising at 120 on 3000 rpm, really not at all bad
The Jimny has extra weight so the 1.5 and 4 speed combo was stressed. In the Fronx however because of the lower curb weight the combination works waay less making it a good long distance cruiser. You can always put it into overdrive if the revs are annoying you at highway speeds, hopefully on a road with a small incline or descend to get a nice cruising experience 😅
Fronx and Grand Vitara looks more stunning with a white color.
