    Supportive care is sometimes a lot more than half the battle to save sick or hurt animals. It's nice to see someone like you advocate major water changes, something I've long believed can be critically important for fish health.

    I really appreciate how you don't jump to using medications immediately, but instead point out that water quality is the best way to start. Using medication preemptively is something I see happening alot, even from bigger youtubers, which has a tricle-down effect on their viewers. It only takes a quick search on forums and facebook groups to see that people pour in medications without really knowing what is going on. Personally, I _always_ consult my aquatic veterinarian before doing any type of medication, to avoid unnecessary stress on my fish. Really well done saving your fish and informing us how you do it. It's inspiring.

    Is it bad that your 'dead fish' vid and this one are what made me subscribe? They're the only ones I've watched at this moment but your compassion and care for the fish, your explanations and descriptions are so helpful that I was like "I gotta have more of this lady!" Keep on rockin', fish-momma

      Dear Rachel, is this a fresh water from your waterpipe or do you have some kind of clean aquarium / cycled water?
      what do you add to the fresh water to treat your tanks? only Water Treatment or something else?
      Best greetings from Europe =)

    I agree with the water quality and food. I see so many people who are treating their fish for various things end up having them get worse and die and I normally just up their heat, do daily water changes, and feed some live food and they come right around in less than a week. Never had near as many issues as so many other people have with sick fish dying. I rarely have issues with fish in general with my rigid water changing scheduled and naturally planted tanks.

    Water changes are the best advice I have came across that works for so many issues. Without going into specifics, I was having trouble with my new neons. They still may have to be medicated, but big frequent water changes have helped (though I don't have your magic well water LOL!). I have stopped having losses. They are active and feeding great.

    How are you heating the water without shocking the fish with cold water from the hoze?
    We have a declorinator cylinder on our hoze and trickle fill our two 3ft, one 5ft and one small cube tanks... This enables the heater thermostat to heat the water as it goes into the tank... No shocked fish.
    I do have a question about water changes for illness in bigger tanks.... 3-4 50% changes would be extremely difficult as a 50% change on the 5ft tank can take most of the day to do once. Any suggestions welcome. FYI we don't have in line heaters... Most places don't sell them anymore due to how often they stop working. So trickle fill or heating a bucket of water in a sink of hot water (so that the heat outside the bucket heats the bucket water) are the only heating options we have xx

    My sister had a betta that she was keeping in an unfiltered .5 gallon "tank". Other than over feeding the fish, she hadn't done a water change in over two months. Its fins were almost completely gone and it could barely move. To be honest, I was surprised it hadn't died. When I found out what was going on (we go to colleges two hours away from eachother) I convinced her to give him to me since he was about to die anyway. I've had him for little over a week and he's doing so much better! He's swimming normally and his fins are starting to grow back. Pristine water and high quality food has been what I'm "medicating" him with and he's healing wonderfully!

    Hello Rachel,
    I've really been enjoying, and learning quite a bit through your videos. Back in the day I had to get a job in the trade to pay for my fish habit. I was able to work the import/export trade in SoCal for about 10yrs, including retail along with all the wholesale time I did.
    I would like to share a tip with you that we would use when we got in really stressed organisms (very regular occurrence during my time). If the organism in question is in need of a quick O2 boost, 5mls of 3% H2O2 per gallon will do the trick. Obviously it needs to be mixed into another container of water before adding to the tank the organisms are going into. If you wish to keep the O2 boosted, you can easily cut that rate by 50% and just keep adding to every water change.
    I found this was quite effective for bringing back stressed corals and echinoderms (starfish & urchins), became a regular tool for all incoming.
    Your shipping disaster video totally brought back memories. I won't say fond memories, no one enjoys receiving in a shipment of cold, dead fish, like... EVER. But it brought back other good memories. Ain't nothin' like bein' in that fishroom, is there?!
    Much love to you and keep on crankin' 'em out. And always remember, I had to get a job in the trade to pay for my fish habit!
    Marina

    I got a pair of Kribensis, and from what I read they usually don't dig in sand. They ha e plenty of rock hides and spots under driftwood, but now the male is digging a cave under the driftwood and spitting sand out in a pile.
    A-There was already a cave under the driftwood.
    B-There is 2 rock/caves.
    C-Its a heavily planted tank.
    I know other Cichlids dig, but wasn't expecting Kribs to do so?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they are just preparing a surface to spawn. They don't dig all over the tank, but its not uncommon for apistos or kribs to do a little minor excavation in preparation of spawning. Generally speaking, they are more leaf litter spawners than anything else, laying on the underside of fallen leaves.

      The female has just started helping the male dig. The make spits the sand out in a random pile, while the female is specifically spitting the sand out on Plants leafs. She just being wierd or?

    Good to see that some of these little guys have pulled through and seem to be doing great. I totally agree with you. In my experience, a weakened fish isn't going to get better by medicating straight away. A lot of the time, the stress needs to subside before there's any point. Adding meds straight away (unless you have to) just adds another thing for the fish to deal with on top of the other problems. Unless its potentially fatal, get them settled in nice clean water.

    My niece had rescued a double tail betta from school suffering from ammonia burn. Apparently it ewas a class experiment and she says it was the only survivor. Poor guy I set him up some nice dechlorinated water and added some aquarium salt and a bit of malachite green I think it's called? I've been feeding him some flakes and black worms. Poor think was eating from some peace lily roots and rotten banana peels. I have the school a ranting because it's cruel! It's been two weeks and lil guy survived. The black from the ammonia burn is going away thankfully. Ur video has been helpful Rachel 😄❤️👍

    Sorry if I sound dumb, but I am always just baffled when I see people doing water changes and when adding water back into the tank it is just from a hose? I wished I could do that to mine , god would that be so much easier. But my tap water is full of chlorine.... am I missing something.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I have a well, so I don't have to dose with dechlorinator. If you use city water with chlorine, you dose for the volume of the tank before refilling (not for the volume you are replacing) and you can refill with a hose like that. Pythons are very popular for this reason, as they replace buckets and hook to your sink.

    I love you! Just your attitude and advice (as well as your awesome hair) Is just kinda the quirky awesomeness that I look for in a fishtuber ^_^ your content is really good & you've answered A LOT of questions about various species that I've had- So thank you!
    I'm glad you managed to save all of the Borneo's they're awesome little fish! I had some in with my goldfish for a while in an understocked tank ('cause it had the high flow & oxygen levels that they like)I really love the little guys! It's a shame that they don't live all that long :( I totally agree with you about the clean water though, It's the most simple and effective treatment for ammonia burns and whatnot!

    I have some of those Danios everyone kept telling me I wouldn't like them but I love their movement. I had 6 but have since dropped to 3 due to not having a well secure tank lid and they kept jumping out! Fixed the issue and no more issues but I am planning to get some more.

    So glad to see everyrhing is working out with the shipment now.
    question: at about the ten minute mark you are talking about your WC and you mention starting to drain and then beginning to add fresh in until about 80% has been changed. Do i understand correctly that fresh water is being added at the same time old is draining? If so , how do you gauge the percentage changed.....really intrigued by this.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well, the drain hose I have set for that tank does about 25% at a time without refill, I know about how long it takes for me to drain and refill that much, so I just do some basic math and guesstimate. You cannot really do too big of a water change.

      sweet...totally makes sense to me now. really cool method. i had not heard of or considered this before. Aside from expedience and ease...is there any other benefits to this method?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I just do it because i can set it to drain and refill and walk away without risk of flooding my fishroom while I tend to other tanks (for close siphoning, maintenance, photography, etc)

    With doing daily 50% water change, does it mess with your tanks cycle... I have a flowerhorn I'm battling with ammonia burn, I messed up my cycle, mistakenly did 80% change and it crashed...now he's a mess.. I got his tank cycle back with Dr. Tim's One and Only... If you would decide to use meds what would you use,? In case I need to go buy something...

    hi, i am new to watching you but i like your style and sense of caring. i just lost a family of juvenile bushy nose, and last night the moma. the popa suvived and im desparate to save him. The city water here is very high in ch;orine and chloramine and i have to add more condiioner to rid the smell. Maybe they changed water treatments because of covid? I am not sure how to keep up the water changes i fear i might cause more problems, buying water is out of my price range. i could get well water from the country but it is high ph... can you help me save my popa?

    I'm glad that the frequent water changes helped the fish, it's a good thing for us to know so thanks. I do have a question about it though. it seems like you were changing A LOT of water. the water that went back in to the tanks, was it straight from the tap? did it need to be dechlorinated? or do you have an alternative source for acquiring large amounts of safe water for your water changes?

    • @RachelOLeary

    I noticed that your incoming water goes in pretty quick. I've always added new water to my tanks at a pretty slow rate. I'm not really sure what my logic for this is... maybe to give the water conditioner more time to work? Maybe a fear that a blast of water might injure the fish? Have I been overthinking it? Should I take the kid gloves off? I wouldn't mind it if water changes took less time.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jay Workman I bounce it off the wall of the tank, I only do it slowly in tanks that are aquascaped.
