    This video was released after ''Holiday'' explosed and made her a breakthrought in the mainstream. A lot of peoples of the MTV saw Madonna for the first time with this video. The ascension of ''Borderline'' was slow in the Hot 100. This was her second song to charting in US after ''Holiday''. This song took 15 weeks to finally enter the top 10 (after nine weeks at the top 20), reaching n.10 in june 1984 and was her first top 10 entry. The song spent a week at the top 10, but spent 13 weeks at the top 20. To date, with later her ballad ''Take a Bow'' in 1994-95, this song was her longest charting single of her career in the Hot 100, spent 30 weeks at the charts.

    The reason why this song sounds so polished and different is ... Jellybean.
    The Borderline version on the album(and the single) is a remix by John 'Jellybean' Benitez who remixed the final version for her first album.
    Also when you listen to the album, you can clearly hear which songs have this sort of polished style.
    The first album is kind of pre 1983 and post 1983 the latter one going into the more defining sound of the 80s.

    • @EmpressReacts

    • @PungiFungi
      @PungiFungi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Madonna was not happy with the way Reggie Lucas produced the songs and so she brought her then boyfriend Jellybean Benitez to improve on them. Benitez was instrumental in Madonna's crossover from the dance charts to the more mainstream Hot 100. Her first top 20 hit, Holiday, was a late addition to her first album brought on board by Benitez and he was the sole producer. Her first top 10 hit, Borderline, the version that became a hit (and used in the video) was remixed by him. It amuses me that years later Reggie Lucas would give himself a bit too much credit over Madonna's early success. He did wrote Borderline, that I will give him.

    Fyi the crotch rub dance at the start of the music video was called the Webo. She and her female friends during her pre record contract and pre fame days when she was hanging out and dancing in clubs roughly late 81 - most of 82 were called the Webo girls.
    And she wore the belt buckle Boy Toy which was her graffiti tag name.
    And the skirt she wore was has her pop street artist friend and roommate in 82 Keith Haring's drawing design print on it. He was friends with pop artists Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat who was Madonna's boyfriend in 82. Keith died of AIDS in 90 and Jean Michel died of a heroin overdose in 88

    • @dalee72

      And on this song and Lucky Star and Like a Virgin and maybe Material Girl. It was rumored because her record company wanted to compete with Cyndi Lauper's singing voice and that's why they sped up her voice supposedly.

    Madonna is currently working on a bio-pic of sorts. I wonder how much of it will mirror this early video of hers? Even then, for me, the themes and locations seemed to mirror her NYC beginnings and early climb to fame. It's done so well that you wonder if you are seeing a star in the making...or is it the opposite - this woman is already a star and the mainstream photogs and media are not sure how to handle her. Yet.
    It's interesting how she's not really that affected by the sudden halt to her climb to fame because she goes back to hanging with the girls and making good with her man. It's actually rather true to later mid-2000's Madonna where she stressed self-improvement as a starting point before tackling bigger things. In her case it was the World, lol.

    I actually think Madonna is a pretty good actress. This video was like her audition tape for “Desperately Seeking Susan.” She really hasn’t had much success in movies since. Well maybe“Evita” and “A League Of Their Own.”

    • @Marc-zi5cq
      @Marc-zi5cq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think Madonna works as an actress if it has something to do with music like in Evita, which she won the Golden Globe for as Best Leading actress and even beat Glenn Close and Frances Mc Dormand among others in 1997 or if it's like Desperately Seeking Susan where the role is very close to her own personality.
      I ADORE her acting in the Bad Girl video, she certainly has more talent than the average popstar which can be displayed in her videos, however to carry a whole movie it depends on the context. She's good in some and not so great in others.

    I think the reason this sounds more polished is that they used a different mix from the original on the Madonna album. The synthesized strings that you hear around the first verse are more prominent. It's barely heard or maybe not even in the original album version. This sounds like the mix they included in the Celebration greatest hits collection. By the way, have you listened to Stephanie Mills' "Never Knew Love Like This Before?" If you love "Borderline," you might want to check out the song that may have inspired this Madonna hit. :)

    I learn new things all the time from watching reaction videos. After almost 40 years, that's the first time I realized that she put that dumb hat back on when she went back to the hood.

    Good songwriter on this one. Madonna still hadn't learned to dance if ever really.

    She made appearance on The Jimmy Fallon show (2016) and did acoustic version of this song! The real guest that night was President Barack Obama.😊 Love this classic song.

    The bad news about madonna is she is a lip synching. She has been caught a few times so has Mariah and a few orhers.

      @@petermiller1839 oh please! I’ve been to several Madonna concerts and if she lip sings I don’t care how much I paid for those tickets! She makes up for it and more!
