I think the best part of these older Paul+Quinns reviews is that their different perspectives and opinions complement each others so perfectly. That on top of their chemistry in terms of personality make these some of the best, most clever, most comprehensive, most entertaining, and informative Board Game breakdowns ever put on the web.
well said mate, this indeed form of reviews/preview is way better, i totally agree that the difference and opinions from all perspectives of games is better on so many levels...still they looks like dead tired hah
Just bought this game this week. Made me laugh to see a 'SU&SD recommends' sticker on the front cover. Maybe it should have added...."well, kind of, but mainly Paul" Also, I wonder if back when this review was made that the lads would ever imagine that they would have their recommendations on the front of games. Well done, guys
I played Gloomhaven and liked it but everyone I know stoped playing it due to the maintenance and long setup time. I feel Gloomhaven doesn't fit with many cult of the new gamers who usually play different games every week. If I was on a desert Island and had could only take 10 games with me, Gloomhaven would be on my list.
I recently have purchased caverna, ive successfully gotten thru a test game. And im wary of teaching it at my next board game night... but im really excited about it. ^.^ Even just playing by myself im getting enjoyment. I think im gonna test a 7 player by myself to see really how much longer it is... FOR SCIENCE! tho i really dont want to explain a game to that many people again... 7 wonders is heck with +50% new players
Agricola is Caverna 2.0 - Imagine a version of Caverna where you don't get a headache reading every goddamn room on a board. Where the game is still massive and endlessly replayable using cards, but is half the price, half the length, and half the barriers to teach. Where the theme makes sense! Wow, they really did fix Caverna by making Agricola
I have only played one game of Caverna and two of Agricola, but the challenge of feeding your family in Agricola made both of those games thoroughly unenjoyable for me. Unlike in Caverna, I just felt like I was being punished for most of the game, either for not having as many workers as the other players, or for not knowing (or laying claim to) the best ways to feed them. I’ve played quite a few games but I found none of my first plays of a game as discouraging as the first game of Agricola. I think it just comes down to personal preference, and maybe with a better teacher for that first game of Agricola I would have liked it much more, but even though I didn’t win any of those games, I’ve never get more like a loser in a board game than playing Agricola and not being able to expand or feed my workers.
This review is an absolute SU&SD classic. I still haven't tried Caverna; it seems a bit intimidating to me, but I'd love to play it with a more casual group.
There is a lot there yes. Once you get into it tho its not as bad as it looks. Wrapping your head around the options is the biggest thing... and noticing what your opponents are doing so you do something different yet better... however ive only just gotten the game... and have not played with my group yet... its more intimidating to me to teach this monstrosity.
That whole segment from 5:30 - 8:10 captured the essence of why people play board games in a way that got way too real and way too scary about the banality of human psychology in that way. I feel attacked.
Caverna is often compared to Agricola for obvious reasons. Agricola is my favourite but isn't necessarily better. In my opinion the question which one is better is dependent on how many times you plays you have with either game. Caverna is best for occasional play where Agricola is best for regular play and for me and many others it is a lifestyle game like chess. This is because of the cards that you draught at the beginning of the game chage the puzzle each time you play. There are also masses of extra cards that can be aquired. Caverna is easier to dive into where Agricola takes time and commitment many gamers won't want to give. So long story short the best game between Caverna and Agricola is dependent on how many times you play the game.
I would play Caverna over Agricola any day of the week. Hate Agricola so much. One of the few games where me and my friends played and felt punished for playing it. Caverna though is nice and I like all of the stuff. I like to play a different game each and every time. Also, the wife likes it which always helps.
A jaunty salsa version of "Suicide is Painless" is A) a weird thing to make, and B) a weird thing to use as the general musical score for a comedy board-game review.
Don't know if this has been said before but the set-up of your first game goes against the rules. You have to have a place for the new animal that is bred or else you have to release it. So you cannot just throw the newborn into the meatgrinder, it has to go to a pen first.
Paul's sentiments on this game are mine. The day I lose my childish joy in gazillions of tactile colourful wooden bits and bobs will be a sad day for me.
i didnt like this game and quinn is right.the game is just and exploded agricola.i am an ameritrash player but we play in our club almost euros all the time.my favorite are these.concordia(own)yedo(own) if you want a simplyfied but still engaging and fun caverna/agricola clones i highly recommend la granja or at the gates of Loyang terrific breed&sell euro games. shut up&sit down should do a review of these beauties
I like Caverna more. Nothing against Agricola, it's just a matter of taste. I like the options being open more and being able to play around with different ideas and see how they turn out. is all
If I enjoy the Klaus Teuber masterwork “settlers of catan” will I like this game as well? -To be clear. My love of settlers boarders on the level of eroticism.
omg... Nerds! This video is a cringe gem. I liked your performance on the sketch and value your opinions and views towards a game I just recently learned to play.
if this was the first SU&SD I'd seen, I'd likely not watch any more. Too many innuendo. What if my kids were staring over my shoulder? Which they often do the MOMENT i pick up my phone...
I enjoy your guys' sense of humor, but to be honest, this wasn't much of a review. Without being familiar with Agricola, I would have little to no idea about how this game is played.

I love SU&SD but this review was garbage. Barely a review
go watch Vassals instead

I played with 7 players ... maybe worst idea ever but all my guest really had a good time ... for like 8 hrs ...
Yeah, we played with 5 new players 7 player... wow... no no no no no no no
Hola, esto va a sonar muy random, pero quiero decirte que me encanta tu foto de perfil flaco, sabelo.
Wow!!
The Cuddle Room will haunt me for the rest of my days.
"Eventually, Paul's experiences in the Cuddle Room would drive him to Canada."
Man remember when 70 dollars was considered too much for a boardgame.
*helium sounds*
*looks at my copy of gloomhaven* teehee
Just remembering Chtulhu Wars' price, it gives me nightmares!
I do remember today.

Chris Fielder where did you bought it, i would’ve loved if my copy had that sticker
@@CarlosCastillo-kh1wk I think I bought it from my local boardgame shop. I live in New Zealand though.
@@Emsworth377 Mine has it as well, had a good chuckle!
Thanks to this video, I will always associate Caverna with Paul in the Cuddle Room.
I like seeing the old episodes, but it does remind you how good the current quality is compared to the older ones.
"...there's nothing heavier or denser..." - oh, the naivety of a pre-Gloomhaven world!

Pre-Middara world, really. 21 lbs? So dense there isn't even space to put an organizer in it? And yet, so unbelievably fun.
@@xfoolsgoldx You can get apps that take away a sizeable chunk of the setup and maintenance time
and yet I would rather play and teach Gloomhaven any day. A 2 scenario session of Gloom runs shorter and faster than a single 4-player game of this

My favourite opener of any SUSD video ever. 24 Karat Classic!!!!

On this day in 2020 I have finally ordered a copy of Caverna. But are any of the expansions really worth it?
Is there such thing as TH-cam awards? You guys need to win it!
There's something deeply unsettling about Paul sometimes...
That's what made him awesome
And I love him for that....
A little old-school weirdness to liven up my wee hours of the morning...
Paul
Kelly Croft I agree with your husbands point and stick to Agricola :)
Random Ashe You shouldnt have to.
you can house rule that you don't get negative points for not having every animal. problem solved?
Caverna is a solvable puzzle. Agricola is much better. 😉
Paul was absolutely brilliant in this. Had me rolling.
this had me cracking up. Paul was excessively hilarious. loved it!
The utter chaos of 17 partially punched stacks of cardboard falling haphazardly off Quinns's lap was classic Shut Up and Sit Down
It seems that I will rewatch every video on your channel...

Paul going down the Caverna hole is a journey.
So, clearly they love Caverna... So many bits and choices, who wouldn't like it?
I'm looking forward to the 'A Feast for Odin' review....three years from now! ;-)
It's brilliant!
Three years later and it came out over three years ago o.o
I would play Caverna over Agricola any day of the week. Hate Agricola so much. One of the few games where me and my friends played and felt punished for playing it. I prefer the tightness and greater interaction of Agricola but they're both great
I love these throwbacks.
A jaunty salsa version of "Suicide is Painless" is A) a weird thing to make, and B) a weird thing to use as the general musical score for a comedy board-game review.
Re-watching this review has made me remarkably sad because I can't play Caverna with my friends right now. Goddam everything to heck.
I guess my eyes could use a good bleaching anyway. Thanks, Paul.
This game could have benefitted from somehow revealing the room selection gradually over the time.

Okay, Im re-subscribing to SU&SD just because I agree with the majority 2/3's of its population: Matt and Paul.. oh yeah, and maybe Tom too.
My favourite Quinns / Paul review - made me put it on my list
Love the Outpost music. Loved that game as a kid.
Would love to see a strategy video. Every time I play, my score keeps going down lower and lower. Reminds me of Scythe. I can never win!
This game just needs Hidden Fun Stuff.
Imagine Caverna with the circus...

you guys are great
Caverna is a solvable puzzle, not a game. Also, it's fiddly AF. There, I said it. Agricola FTW.
Cool to see my favorite game getting a review!
do you like it more than agricola?
if so, why?
I like Caverna more. Nothing against Agricola, it's just a matter of taste. I like the options being open more and being able to play around with different ideas and see how they turn out. is all
Jenny Kay oh that's fine, I haven't played either yet.

I am glad to see that SUSD is getting out off their comfort zone by reviewing Caverna.

These guys seem like nice chaps…. But their review style is all over the place for me
Ooh... Tom Jobim
I can't get excited about all the droll, heaviness of Uwe. I enjoy Euro's, but Uwe just brings too much in weight, options, and dryness for me
