Great idea. Here’s a hint for you when using the hole saw on plastic. Try running it in reverse. Usually will give you a lot cleaner cut and won’t crack it.
I made a water trough out of 5 inch gutter. Works great, but gets muddy quick. Its easy to dump, but hope to figure out a mud trap to keep the water clearer longer
I made these and only problem is they stand on top and poop in the water a lot! It is much better to drill holes in the sides so the ducks can stick their heads in to drink but not stand on top and poop in water
Yes there is a possibility they will do that but for the most part ours stay off the top but yes a side hole n a bucket system might be a little cleaner. Thanks for stopping by and sharing.
We do use the same setup for winter. We have to go out daily and break the ice when below freezing and if super cold then we will check mid day and evening as well. Just an extra step, but not much to it. Thanks for stopping by!
@@NellyeHight Yes, the only times it broke was our own fault. If you break the ice with an object make sure not to hit all the way through to the bottom. Once you hit through the ice and go straight to the bottom the plastic can crack but have learned from that mistake.
We have three ducks with our chickens, and I am trying to figure out the best solution for when they need water in the coop as we live in Michigan. Come winter, they’ll need to have it indoor. Any suggestions?
I personally do not keep the water or feed in the coops even in winter. I have found that with this setup having a stick and going out 3 times a day to break up the ice can work. I also found that the 2-4 gallon rubber feeder bowls from TSC work well in the winter bc when it freezes in winter you can hit the sides of the bowl and break free the ice without damaging the rubber bowl. If you need to keep it in the coop I would probably research a good water bowl with built in heater if you have electric available out to your coop. Thanks for stopping by!
@@HomesteadersOnTheHill thank you! I’ve been looking for different ways in hopes of avoiding the mess/moisture with the bedding in the coop. Appreciate the response! :)
I really like this idea! It is simple and will save money. What will you do during the winter if it gets freezing cold? Also, how often do you need to fill it/change it?
I haven't figured out yet what we will do during the winter months yet as I still want them to have access to the water but if it continually freezes the pool will most likely be done for. I do know that we will be replacing it most likely every year but will still have the hardware which shouldn't need to be replaced. By personal choice I clean out our pool on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I like for them to have cleaner water but I'm sure they wouldn't care much if it wasn't. They do seem to enjoy the fresh water on the days I change it out though. If it has been really sunny I will usually have to give it a little scrub from the algae that forms in the direct sunlight but if you could put shade over the pool I'd say would last a longer time before having to scrub.
Sorry I thought I was replying on the pool still. :) I do change their waters out the same time I clean the pool. If you get a colored tub instead of clear plastic it, would take much longer to grow algae in the them but bc they are clear, I like to remove the algae every other day. Again, the ducks may not care as much but I like to have things clean for them.
During the winter months if its below freezing I will make 2-3 trips a day to make sure they have access to water. More work but that comes with the responsibilities of taking care of the animals.
@@HomesteadersOnTheHill you could possibly buy a water heater for the winter, idk how hot they get and if it would melt the plastic or not but thats what I’m planning to do with my small pond in my duck run
No worries. Honestly any really sharp edge would be good. I personally used a leatherman Rebar multitool as the blade on it, out of the package is extremely sharp. Attached is the link. thanks for stopping by! www.amazon.com/dp/B005KSWIBQ?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_7JBAAYXAY3B7KEYAVNHW
@@HomesteadersOnTheHill thank you so much for replying. We are going to build some of these with a taller container with holes on the sides instead of on top. Your idea was super creative and I appreciate you and so happy I found your channel. I hit the 👍 Subscribed and will share 🐾💜🐾💜
Good info but don’t you think a minute in a half into you video is too much to Finally get to the real reason for the video .. someone’s “editing “ happy 😂
Thumbnail says clean duck water and this system does not guarantee that, it’s actually the worst method I’ve seen. The ducks can step on that and shit into it directly as well as cleaning that’s harder than just putting something like poultry nipples with cups on a bucket. Also change that intro bro tf lmao

That is the challenge when it comes to ducks. They get everything messy quickly
The ducks “use the restroom”? You are one polite gentleman.
Beautiful family.
Genius!! Thank you for the tips for newbies like us!
You’re welcome. Glad to be of help to others interested in raising ducks.
Put the lid flat on wood. And use painters tape to cover lid first. Then drill. No cracking…..and holes are smooth.
Thanks for this idea. We have 2 ducklings and will make this for them.
Thanks for stopping by and hope this setup works for you.
This is a great idea... Thank you..
Thanks for sharing. A smaller version should work perfect in our duck house at night(maybe). Ha ha They do love making a mess. 😂
Brilliant!! Gonna do this today.

James, thank you! It’s a lot of fun and responsibility and the kids enjoy it as well.
Great video. Those ducks are so cute. 🥰
Glenda, they are. You need to get you some. We even have male khaki Campbell ready for you.
Cool and great idea not going to break the bank

Run the hole saw reverse through plastic
Someone has probably already asked this, but what do you do in winter? Do you have different waterers then? Or do you keep the same ones?

Thought about that, thank you! Cutting seemed to work making the hole bigger but might consider trying that next time thank you.

Ducks eat & mate in water. Throw that out
Do you have a better watering system?
Ducks definitely do those things in water but are not able to do those from this smaller duck water system. Thanks for stopping by!

You can’t use the poultry nipples for ducks.
Yea i made one and that is exaclty what they do shit directly into water
