Horse Braiding Tutorial - DUTCH Running Braid

In this horse braid tutorial , I will teach you how to braid a long mane. The Dutch running braid for a horse is the easiest running braid to learn to learn. It’s so easy, even beginners will have no trouble learning the steps. This was the first horse braid I learned at 11 years old at 4H horse camp. This is how the camp counselor taught it, so if you are teaching kids, my step by step braid instructions are easy for a child to understand.
The Dutch braid is a perfect maintenance braid for growing a long mane or keeping horses with long manes tangle free. I have actually heard it called the Andalusian braid, so if you have a PRE horse, Gypsy Vanner, Friesian, Arabian, Mini Horse or any horse with a long mane, this is one you must learn. If you need a long mane out of the way for schooling, dressage, long lining, lunging , driving, or body clipping a horse you will want to learn to braid the running braid. The Dutch running braid is a 3 strand braid that runs along the top of the horse’s neck. If you can French braid, you can learn to do this easy braid.
Princess the Mini Horse has a perfect mane for braiding because it’s long and fluffy. It doesn’t need to be thick, just use smaller sections for thin manes, larger sections for thick manes. Spritzing the mane with water will also help if you find you are having trouble keeping your braid tidy.
