  • In this horse braiding tutorial I will show you how to braid a long mane using rubber bands. You might call them dressage braids, dressage plaits, or dressage knots, but whatever you call them they are a must learn braid if you have a horse with a long mane. They are so easy you may find they come in handy for everyday riding, schooling, driving, or even lunging. Your horse or pony doesn’t need to have a mane as long as Princess has. I have been able to make these work with a medium long mane. The smaller the braid, the closer together you can place them. I don’t sew my braids in, but a few stitches with yarn that matches your mane would definitely give these staying power needed for a horse show, but just using the elastics works too. Just try a practice ride to see how the work for your horse.

Thank you for the idea! These braids don’t look great on a mini horse like Princess, with a big bridle path, but hopefully the tutorial helps out anyone with a normal long mane! 😁

What would be the difference if you braided overhanded? Just asking because that's my favoured way of braiding.

It makes the top side of the button flatter (I think). It also makes the hole to run the loose hair through easier to make. 🩷🩷🩷

is there a way to do those but a lotttt smaller and many more of them with the long mane? i have a comp coming up

It depends how thin your mane is. You can make as many as you want, and more will of course make them smalker in width (Princess is a mini horse so everything looks big on her) but if your mane is thick, they are going to look big when you fold them. The best you can do is trial it before your show. Try different widths for the braids, maybe a wax or styling product to keep the hair tight. Braiding is a lot of trial and error. Good luck at your horse show!

how do i take these braids out? And btw i like your video

Thanks! Start from the back and work forward. First I unflip the buttons, then got back and cut the elastics. I have a tool called a “pony pick” that cuts the elastics.
