Can we talk about the fact that this film was literally a drama-horror copy of the film "Splash". Same ordinary-appearing, lonely protagonist. Extraordinary love interest that understands them. "Mad" scientist that gets mistreated and disrespected, but ultimately wants to help the creature. Even the ending shot is *identical* , gills and all.
Tbh this is why I suggested you make an essay about the Kit Kittredge movie, e.g. the duality of consumerism espoused by Mattel's doll line and the Depression-era backdrop of Kit's story in the movie.
I loved this film when I saw it in the cinema. Great story (made better now that I know more about the historical context), exceptional villain, as he progressively looses his finger and simultaneously sinks deeper into desperation, great themes, great use of green - aqua colours to make the world more cohesive, having a mute as a main character. Everything about it is fresh and imaginative. Then I got to see what people were commenting about it “hehe, weird film, freaky love scene with the fish man, couldn’t see beyond that”. Really?? That’s what they got out of it? It was always a big disappointment to me (how others saw it, I mean). Thank you for another great analysis. Del Toro’s films are so meticulously made and the world is so expansive, you can never stop shovelling and finding out how much you are missing if you don’t keep shovelling.
Honestly that's one of the reasons I wanted to make this video for so long. It's hard to call a movie "underrated" when it won the Best Picture Oscar, but I feel like it still gets mischaracterized and dismissed tragically often. I'm glad you enjoyed my analysis, it makes all the effort worth it!
Of course, I want to make stuff that people enjoy watching. Even if TH-cam messes with the ads, even if I got no money from them, I'd still want to make these videos. Thank you so much for watching :)
Seeing someone for who they are, not what we want them to be, is the essence of love. Having listened to your video, I now remember that there was a sex scene between Strickland and his wife which was disgusting. He was consuming her, too. 😮

I wish more movies and tv-shows were like this. Thought-provoking and spreading a positive message.

I'll have to see, though I have a lot of other ideas in the works!

I like the theory that this creature is the same we see in Hell-boy. Not only same kind of creature, but same character
Heck, even the same actor! It's a really fun concept to consider...
@@DanielGoldhorn but mostly story wide. And as a Theory, it gives "Abraham Sapiens" a very interesting backstory
Aw,I love cute happy endings
Your reviews and video essays are always so nice to watch. I'm glad you still make them despite what TH-cam does to them c:

Glad you managed to get the video out in spite of the TH-cam overlords!

Another banger has been released! 10/10 I've been inspired
Love this video because it really shows how much passion time and effort was put into it
Really great stuff Dan! :D
Thank you!
Wonderful video! Not my favorite Del Toro film, but this made me appreciate it much more!
Honestly that's the best comment I could have gotten, thank you
