Good interview, as someone raised in Portland and very involved in the music scene at one time I appreciate that he spoke up for Andy Ngo. The fact that was publicly persecuted for saying that Andy is brave is scary to me, he is beyond brave and I’m so thankful for him telling the truth about what happened here (and continues to happen). The far left has made this city and it’s residents unrecognizable to me.
The Andy Ngo book that this man spoke of and suffered such horrendous personal consequences is an excellent book. What is happening is the modern form of “book burning”. Something that should not be tolerated in a free society

The few that don't just scream really loud, but they are few in number. The bad press would've blow over by the next news cycle and the band would've gotten a lot of long-term respect for doing the right thing by ignoring the impotent and hypocritical woke Twitter mob. Look at how many rockstars have survived real controversy, and then look at this tame endorsement of a book calling out radical leftwing lunatics. Michael Jackson was accused of molesting a child FFS, many other celebrities have been to prison for things like RAPE, ASSAULT, etc...etc... and are still loved by the masses. They all weathered the storm. This dude Tweeted about a fkng book. You seriously think this would cost the band members their careers? LMAO. What planet are you living on?
I haven't read the book myself, but I found it absurd and obscene that he (and, his bandmates) was suffering such vitriolic abuse for saying he liked the book. I so respect Mr. Marshall and his decision; better to walk away than to have your mouth muzzled.
That's just what happens for celebrities or really anyone when they go political. If you are famous, it is well known to stay away from politics otherwise you will usually offend half of the population whatever you say.

I can't wait for this guy's single work. His playing for _Sigh No More_ and _Babel_ is one of the main reasons I fell in love with those albums. I enjoyed the raw singing of Marcus Mumford and indeed the lyrics of all the songs, but the banjo--regardless of what Winston and the others think of it now--sealed the entire sound they were going for in such a superb and important way. His sublime playing on "Ghosts That We Knew" is simply beautiful. Mumford & Sons is hopelessly lost without this man. Winston did nothing wrong and he is certainly welcome to his opinion. The Twitter mob needs to be disbanded and the clout it wields removed. They are far more dangerous and detrimental to a flourishing society of people and their ideas than Andy Ngo's book or any tweets posted by anyone who read it. Such a weird, backwards world we live in.
This breaks my heart that we lost the Extreme talent of a gifted musician and possible band because of a voiced opinion. We should embrace difference and viewpoints and learn from one another, not destroy someone because we don’t agree. Mumford and Sons is my favorite band. Sad. Very sad.

To think that this guy had built a camaraderie with people that you would think would have a strong bond touring and struggling together to create a lasting legacy, would just throw him to the wolves like that just makes my blood boil. It should be down to others to decide what they are by how they treat other human beings and Antifa are certainly demonstrating vile and hateful intent in their own way.

This def made me rethink my position. We're doomed if we do what the woke do. I know it's a ploy to control people. But that's what we're supposed to be against. Seen several comments in this thread saying theyre now going to boycott the band for Winston choosing to leave. Why boycott the band who didnt do anything? Just look at the drummer from System of a Down expressing his staunch support from Trump and his bandmates still being alongside with him despite obviosly disagreeing with him.
And how long has it been since they've made a record together or did a world tour? Marcus, Ted, and Ben don't have to do anything that might threaten their career, especially if they don't agree with what Win is endorsing. Win was in a band of four, so anything he does or says could very much affect his bandmates. So he did the right thing distancing himself from them. Marcus sure as hell did not deserve the storm of people that came after him because of something Winston said or did, especially when his and Win's politics do not align and they do not align.

As Winston says, One must be extremely careful about the language you use. I have heard some of the language used by For Britain and it is toxic. I don't think Morrissey has researched it properly. I can only guess that he meant he doesn't like some of the anti-wokists who _attacked_ him over his apology, not those who just pointed out that it was a mistake.
This whole thing is so damned alien and weird he's not sure how he should respond to the deconstructionists' nightmarish mayhem. It allows for them to feel virtuous for a split second and forget what total failures they are. Since this feeling is so fleeting, they ravenously scour Twitter for more prey to abate their feelings of uselessness for another handful of seconds.
If Winston was 'surprised' by the reaction he was very naive. Nobody is allowed to criticise those who riot, loot and burn US cities. Surely he should have known that. And this is not a 'niche' issue. It is one of the central issues of our time.
It is not that naive. Most people have no real idea what is going on. If they did Democrats would not have won the US elections, labour would have completely collapsed and the EU would have collapsed. People simply have no idea.

He worked just as hard for the band too. It’s so sad that some people cannot speak their mind nowadays without potentially losing their career and friends. And it seems really one sided. I love Mumford and Sons. I am glad they still support him. I hope to see them all back together someday.
And MF&sons big hit is ironically a song called "I will wait" for you... with lyrics like... Now I'll be bold As well as strong And use my head alongside my heart So take my flesh And fix my eyes A tethered mind free from the lies
My take on the situation. 1. Winston was never wrong, his stance on extremism, be it of either side, was morally sound. 2. The band would have stayed by him, but he chose to leave seeing the toxic wake fucks that would attack him and thus dragging the band with him. He wanted to protect his band. 3. His band mates should have stayed by him no matter what. What they are doing now is ironic with the songs they made. Its disappointing, I expected more from the band, I didn't think their integrity would be that fragile. "Little Lion Men".
I was a supporter of Mumford & Sons. I went to their "Gentleman of the Road" gigs and saw them perform live on three gigs. I thought them a wholesome bunch of guys, a family. They are now fatally wounded by this, by caving-in to a twitter mob and not coming together to support their bandmate. In this upside-down world where there is an attempt to redefine words: "silence is violence"; "words are violence" - but actual violence is not, we find Antifa which is (factually) a Marxist, violent mob. That is exactly what it is. Mistaking the ignorant tweets of activists for actual public opinion is a mistake you make only once. I'm done with Mumford and Sons over this - they chose money (bookings) ahead of integrity - and their family. Shame on them.
So Winston left to protect the band, they apparently didnt want him to leave, and you will do what the woke do and punish them anyway. Did you watch this full interview as this is exactly what Winston spoke against. He said he saw the anti-woke doing what the woke do. How are we any better if we become like them? Where will we end up if we normalise their behaviour by practicing it ourselves?

I don't agree with Pearl Jam's politics but I can still listen and appreciate their music without berating them. Why do we have to insert politics or ideology into everything?
Thank you for your honest reflection. I agree with you when you say "art or creation is the pursuit of truth" and hope you nothing but the absolute best in your future music endeavors.
Leftists are well known for projection. As a general rule of thumb, if a leftist accuses you of something, that person is probably guilty of whatever they accuse you of, i.e. fascism, racism, homophobia, etc... Case in point, the literal fascists attempting to a destroy a man's life because he tweeted about a book.
The lesson here is don't fucking tweet because the public has every right to not want to buy your shit anymore. That's the other side of capitalism. There is no such thing as cancelation, just the downside of capitalism....the right to choose what we will put up with or like.
I'm always disappointed when these individuals apologize despite not being apologetic in the least. The more people just say, 'I'm sorry you were offended,' or something of the sort, the less likely 'cancel culture' is to exist.

There's artistic integrity, and then there is the general kind. This man has both.
I can't wait for this guy's single work. His playing for _Sigh No More_ and _Babel_ is one of the main reasons I fell in love with those albums. His sublime playing on "Ghosts That We Knew" is simply beautiful. Mumford & Sons is hopelessly lost without this man.

Winston is doing something waaaaay more important than playing in a cheesy band….i never liked Mumford & sons…but now that hes quit that band, and i am actually aware of who Winston is…i am fan….
Oh my, some extremists called him a fascist. He needs to wear that as a badge of honor.
He worked just as hard for the band too. It’s so sad that some people cannot speak their mind nowadays without potentially losing their career and friends. And it seems really one sided. I love Mumford and Sons. I am glad they still support him. I hope to see them all back together someday.
And says more about the band where was their allegiance and support, but then most bands have been silent over the last year during so called pandemic
Was his band mates also the reason he left? If that is true, it would be heartbreaking to realize they really aren't your mates.
And MF&sons big hit is ironically a song called "I will wait" for you... with lyrics like...
Now I'll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart
So take my flesh
And fix my eyes
A tethered mind free from the lies
My take on the situation.
1. Winston was never wrong, his stance on extremism, be it of either side, was morally sound.
2. The band would have stayed by him, but he chose to leave seeing the toxic wake fucks that would attack him and thus dragging the band with him. He wanted to protect his band.
3. His band mates should have stayed by him no matter what. What they are doing now is ironic with the songs they made.
Its disappointing, I expected more from the band, I didn't think their integrity would be that fragile.
"Little Lion Men".
I wish this man the best, his mom and dad have been his support and obviously many fans. He will bounce back I am positive.
I wonder if he still regrets it. His intelligence is so sexy. I found the band overrated but he is utterly fabulous.
Andy Ngo is a hero, Winston. I hope you return to the band soon.
After hearing this I might have a problem with Mumford and Sons but it isn't because of Winston Marshall or his beliefs.
Well said
Agree
So Winston left to protect the band, they apparently didnt want him to leave, and you will do what the woke do and punish them anyway. Did you watch this full interview as this is exactly what Winston spoke against. He said he saw the anti-woke doing what the woke do. How are we any better if we become like them? Where will we end up if we normalise their behaviour by practicing it ourselves?
Show mercy and support the band. It's what Winston wants.
Former KGB agent Yuri Bezmenov - "The highest art of warfare is not to fight at all but to subvert anything of value in the country of your enemy until such time that the PERCEPTION OF REALITY of your enemy is screwed up to such an extent that he does not perceive you as an enemy."
Portland and Seattle? Say no more….it is now code for woke.
Why oh why did he apologise, more respect if had not
Was George Orwell who said • ‘In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act’
Finishing your career over a tweet is nuts, I hope he finds new ways to satisfy his creative drive
Narcissists love when they get someone to apologize for something they have never done.
Telling someone they can't read a book is in itself fascist. How do they not see that!? I'm just learning about this. Is this real?
Leftists are well known for projection. As a general rule of thumb, if a leftist accuses you of something, that person is probably guilty of whatever they accuse you of, i.e. fascism, racism, homophobia, etc... Case in point, the literal fascists attempting to a destroy a man's life because he tweeted about a book.
The lesson here is don't fucking tweet because the public has every right to not want to buy your shit anymore. That's the other side of capitalism. There is no such thing as cancelation, just the downside of capitalism....the right to choose what we will put up with or like.
It shows that public apologies are just to save face - he isn’t sorry at all- and rightly so
I'm always disappointed when these individuals apologize despite not being apologetic in the least. The more people just say, 'I'm sorry you were offended,' or something of the sort, the less likely 'cancel culture' is to exist.
Don’t apologize to those people. The proper response is the one finger salute.
Poor guy. And a living lesson, why you should never apologise. Ever.
Wish you would come back. . love the four of you in mumford and sons
The dude looks like he's been in an abusive manipulative relationship... goes to show how damaging this whole culture is
Looks like it and acts like it. He’s walking on eggshells the whole time.
He has not yet realized that his career is over. Maybe once he gets over this period and his mental health is in a better place he will realize.
