  • During the latest visit, state officers saw "rows upon rows of chairs" set up in the morning on lands under the management of DLNR specific to the area of Waikiki Beach fronting the Moana Surfrider Hotel, the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and the Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort.

Thanks, I hate those frickin chairs that monopolize the beach. Long ago they were only closer to the hotel, over the years they are right up to the shore so you have no view of the ocean if you're in the only open beach space which is left, behind the chairs. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have an umbrella, but these companies shouldn't be taking all the spots cause they are there first. Hawaii's beaches are narrow, not like a lot of other countries/places that have lots of room to set up this kind of thing! It seems unfair that folks have to get up earlier then the folks that rent the umbrellas & chairs to get a view of the ocean from their towel. Or worse yet feel the pressure to rent this so they can have a decent view of what they already spent a gazillion dollars to get that view. Let's have that laid back aloha feeling that brought me & others like me back again & again.

I mean, Ko'olina lagoons (#1-4) are man made specifically for hotel development, so it's not really the best example. Those beaches literally did not exist (at least as it is now) prior to development. While you could argue that all beaches in Hawaii, by law, must remain and be accessible to the public, if a developer created the place, does this rule about chairs and umbrellas still apply? The public are allowed to use all lagoons, just not private property. It's a tricky one, for sure.

This is a problem everywhere, and it most definitely needs to be addressed. There’s this one public beach in FL, that has public beach access. We’ve been going there since the 90s. Over time though, developers would build on the dunes, and started doing this. You basically can only put your chair in front, or behind. The way the tide carves the sand however, that doesn’t really give you much room in front. But behind, you can’t se anything but empty chairs. It really annoyed me because after dragging out chairs that I couldn’t put out, my mom rented several for us. We were one of the few people using them. We were guilty of promoting this behavior!
It’s like toll roads. You have a public highway that needs lanes, so you add lanes, only to charge people for them, so you end up with a crowded highway, and no one using those lanes. They privatized the public roads, and now they’re privatizing the public beaches. Then again, where I live, you used to have free public access to several lake parks. Now they want to charge you admission. I get that you don’t want people camping for free, but you don’t own the lake, and access to that lake was always free.

I think politicians should be more concerned about the homeless population rather than than corporations putting a few chairs out on the sand that corporations paid to get there from California

Will just raise prices for the end customer for staff to haul chairs and umbrellas back and forth all day. Always a consequence.

This is why I decided not to go to Hawaii. I plan to go to England and Scotland where they have respect for the beauty of the beach and its integrity.

They are being lazy and cutting costs. They don't want to pack then unpack them so they are leaving them there and saving on labor. They need to be fined.

Maybe they can use Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks personal firefighting cruise to keep the chairs picked up. I hear they’re out of a job looking for a new one.

So can own beach now? Our state is run by a bunch of clowns. If I went there and sat on those empty chairs or in that area, will I get kicked out.

i'm on the side of Aloha beach services on this one; these are family owned companies that built what everyone knows as waikiki today. The city has slowly fkd with them for years even putting another non local company right next to them. Whatever small locally run companies wana do is fine by me. Aloha
