Great sounding Recto Leon. There is something special about these old Rectifiers that the newer ones seem to lack, IMO. I own an late '92 Rev F and although brighter than the later G versions, I still have to dial a lot of the bass out and like you mentioned, bump up the mids. That is basically the trick to hit the sweet spot with these amps. I'm currently running Ruby 6L6GCMSTRs, EH 5U4GBs Rectifier tubes, and Chinese tubes on all positions minus V2 Ruby 12AX7ACZ and V5 Sovtek LPS. Works like a charm with my style of playing. Love your channel, cheers from South Florida 🍻

Nice review! "X Rectifier" stands for quantity of rectifying 5U4 tubes or every 50 w of power in an amp. Single for 50, dual for 100 & triple for 150 watts .

    • @pierredeslandes9896
      @pierredeslandes9896 3 ปีที่แล้ว

BUT the single rectifier only has silicon rectification :-) . So i guess that the only rule is : you get 50 watt for each iteration. That's the only rule i came up with. Silly Randall Smith :-)

Reading the manual is a big help in understanding how the EQ works on these amps. Some of my favorite settings look quite extreme if you are, like me, coming from a Marshall background. I get a nice blackface tone on the clean channel with the bass at 10:00, mids all the way OFF (!), treble at 2:00, presence 1:00, and gain at 11:00 on the pushed setting. I would have never come up with that had I not read the manual though!

Love the dual recs! I've got a 3 channel, non multi watt dual rec and it is killer. I boost with either a TS-9 or a Horizon Devices Nano Attack. The nano is awesome because as you turn up the selector, it pulls out low end and tightens the tone. It's just absolutely the best amp for my baritone guitars. Great video as always Leon! Took the week off to rebuild my channels... to build up the bottom end in drop tuned guitars. Your Axe-FX Recto Models video served as reference and inspiration. Also pulled reference from Dokken's Back For The Attack recordings. Tests included dual and quad tracked parts, multiple speakers and mics.
What I found useful is Fabfilter's EQ, which serves as a Spectral Analyzer showing some of the heaps. Although no bands are being EQ'd, just having a readout and a peak meter, very handy.
It improved my ability to hear frequency ranges, and understand sounds based on various high/mid/bass references.
Of course, you're tweaking parameters all the time in your videos... and I discover your inate ability to dial in sounds.
The drawing board, as it were.
Marshall over Mesa, in a quad tracked hard panned test, each channel received Marshall and Mesa recordings. It filled out some of the size and plugged some gaps in the frequency curve, but a flanging effect, or flamming effect, I believe it's called, was heard. But dual passed was wider, Marshall on left and Mesa on right.
Clips were arranged side by side, and I walk all over the house to hear them distanced from the speakers, but an improvement none the less.
Loudness for content creators, many many times I have to target a specific volume level, which is most of the challenge. My references were tested and they failed miserably. To get Dokken uploaded to YT, they would reduce the level 3.9db. Apparently my MP3 is either compressed, or 2020 doesn't look good for loud music.
Thanks Leon for being so damn good. You rock mate.

Great demo! I have a late 90's rev G and I run Mesa branded 6L6's, tube rectified, bold setting with the bass, mids, and trebble at 10 , 2 , and 3 o"clock respectively. Also, I boost it with a keeley red dirt overdrive (tube screamer) set up in the classic drive at 0, tone at noon, and level at 10. Its sounds epic mixed with my, also late 90's, 5150 combo. Hi Leon. As per your request. I've got a 1997 Rev. G Triple Rec. SN: R-009630. If you want to get more of the Marshall sound, switch to EL34 tubes, keep it in Vacuum Tube Rectification. The EL34's draw a lot more power and can wear everything out on diode rectification. Also, load some slightly milder preamp tubes in it. You can find a good tube kit for it here. www.dougstubes.com/guitar-amp-tube-kits/mesa/mesa-boogie-dual-rectifier-roadster-tube-kit.html . Go with the EL34's and the Rock / Hard Rock preamp tube kit. If you want, or feel you need, you can change your rectifier tubes as well. Bold, on tube rectification. As for the modern/vintage switch, I find I like it with both the orange and red on vintage, it's a negative feedback loop setup on the vintage. Modern disengages the negative feedback loop. I currently have the original tubes in it still from when it was built. It's the 6L6's. I'm switching to the EL's. I'm looking to go to more of that JCM 800 type sound with it so I've researched this in-depth. The EL's as you probably know has more mid's in it compared to the 6L6's. My current settings are bold, tube rectifier, vintage on orange and red and clean on the variable high gain/clean switch. Note, in that setting, ( vintage on orange and red) when on the red channel, BOTH presence knobs affect the red channel, so play with them and adjust to your preference. I also have a NUX Cerberus that I use in the four cable setup. I use the drive pedal it has which is a copy of the JHS Morning Glory overdrive. I have the gain and tone maxed and the volume at 9:00. I have the gain on the orange at noon, gain on red maxed. Bass maxed on both channels, mids at 11:00 on both, treble maxed on both, presence on orange at noon and 3:00 on red. I have my loop selector knob on the back set to Loop on Orange & Red. Each channel volume is set around 9:00, adjusted to match in level between the two and I use the Loop Active Master to control them both. Set like that, I got clean rhythm and pure distortion. You can modify any of those setting to your preference. Just remember as I said earlier, if you switch to EL34's, stay in tube rectification, or you'll shorten your power tubes life fast. Oh, one other thing. The "Single, Dual, Triple" Rectifier name refers to the number of rectifier tubes it has. They all have two modes of rectification, Silicone diode or tube. The wattage comes from the power tubes, obviously. Single rec has two power tubes, 50 watts, dual has four power tubes, 100 watts, and the triple has six power tubes, 150 watts. But then, I'm pretty sure you know all of that. I just heard you refer to the dual rec name meaning it has two forms of rectification. Thought I'd help clarify that. I hope this helps you some with the amp. These things are kittens in my opinion. This is the only Mesa I've owned or played. I got it in 1997. Oh, and the cab is the original '97 recto cab that came with it. It still has the factory EVM12L's. (Black Shadow EVM's). The cab is a slant top, open back top half, closed-back bottom. The head has never played through any other cab. I'm more than glad to help you with any other questions you may have that I may have the knowledge on. Pictures of my stuff are also available, let me know if you're interested and we can link up on Facebook or something. Have a good one my friend.

I have a Single Rectifier. The Single Rectifiers are three-channel recs stripped down to the green and red channels and they also don’t have *any* power supply options except for power tube type, if you want to switch; there is no tube rectification option, it’s diode only, and no spongy/bold switch. I don’t have a Single Rectifier Solo Head - I have a Single Rectifier Rectoverb 50 - but that’s just a Solo Head with a spring reverb whacked on. Anyways just wanted to say that sadly the Single Recs don’t have power supply options. I love mine anyways though :)

This one lives in Drop C as it's my main guitar for Ragdoll stuff, but I've got a few other PRS guitars (and guitars in general) where I change up the tuning a lot. My Strat and Sunburst LP tend to live in standard, my "shredder" guitars tend to live in e flat.

You just pointed out a very good thing there.
Back in the day, a lot of musicians (who didn't necessarily have the knowledge about having to supplement a recto with OD/Boost), would buy a recto with the belief of it sounding tight based on the hype and the tight sound they'd hear from records, and then become completely bummed out when plugin into it.
I'd like to think that it doesn't happen as much nowadays, given that the information is just a few clicks away in the interwebs.
Then again, some people could argue that a good amp shouldn't have to require external gear to reach the end result.
I think both are great, so long as ppl are informed enough to know what they are actually getting out of said gear prior to buying it.
