Oh god no. It would be unique, but you could never give him a non-porn movie where he’s actively encouraged to make everything penis-related, or penis-adjacent, on purpose.
The *now 5* “Baptizing” scenes / Money Shots would have at least 2 in POV, and Cronenberg’s version of Circumcisedhead would have needed the old lady to ahhhh “trap him.”

This movie left out a LOT of context as to what exactly what Rawhead Rex is, for anyone wondering, he's pretty much a Pagan Avatar to represent the negative side of masculinity, causing him to be violent, cannibalistic, and very rapey, which is why a pagan artifact of female fertility was what defeated him

That actually made the end of the movie make sense. They so should've included that information in the movie. It's like when you see a movie and it makes no sense then you find out half of it was cut out just before release then they release the unedited version, you see it and it makes sense.

Poor Clive Barker. He never gets to make the movies he wants to make without some kind of meddling from the studios. Nightbreed got censored for over 20 years because some idiot didn't like how the monsters were actually the heroes, and also that Clive is gay.
Are you serious?? That movie, although a fun watch, was nowhere near scary. The Monsters were actually charming, like I can actually picture myself, sharing a fat bowl with them. Even the Monsters in Canada are friendly!
I think that was the idea, we were supposed to like them and feel bad for them when the evil humans (especially the guy who was a serial killer in that mask that looked like it was made out of old lettuce with buttons for eyes) tried to invade their home and kill them all.
The studio probably didn't like that idea, they tend to be very conventional in their thinking, certainly at the time. I can only imagine what the same people would think of "House of a 1,000 Corpses" and "Devil's Rejects", espeically "Devil's Rejects" as both focus heavily on the killers and making them the heroes of the story.

Been a fan of this movie since it came out and he is the only movie monster that ever gave me nightmares and occasionally still pops up in my dreams trying to eat me and I'm still a kid in those dreams. Thanks Clive
I read a graphic novel based on the short story, and all I can say is that if this Rawhead scared you, Barker’s original concept would make you piss yourself. Brandon’s description doesn’t do it justice.

I’d like to see this get remade. It’s a decent, one-off monster flick. With modern FX and some tweaking of the script, Rawhead Rex could be a “no holds barred” horror flick. And, we haven’t had one of those in a while.

In reality (folklore, mythology, whatever) Rawhead and Bloody Bones is a nursery boggle, who is supposed to get naughty children, so eating babies makes more sense than this.

I think that "baptism" scene in this movie is particularly interesting when you take Barker's homosexuality into consideration, .. . what, this big super masculine demon dressed in what almost resembles bondage garb pissing on this sort of effeminate padre who appears to be reacting ECSTATICALLY to it.

Rawhead Rex is everything about male sexuality's bad side (rape, violence, hunger, domination) in the form of a lunatic demigod. The story is far better/ more interesting than the movie. Especially true for the ending with the mother goddess statue - the only reason it allowed Rawhead to be defeated was the creature's own crippling fear of it, not any mystical power it had itself. He was even disgusted/ repelled by menstrual blood; the woman he left alive in the book was on her period, not pregnant (though that may have had the same reaction).

Thought this may not be a good movie for some, Brandon's puns and funny attempt on irish accent makes this worth watching.

I love the editing on the Church singing scene. It looks like the priest's actually singing along.
I went on a search for stone circles in Ireland about 10 years ago. You can buy a map but it's not very accurate because Irish farmers do have a habit of pulling them down (I'm not certain how strong Ireland's heritage laws are). It's a pity there isn't a monster under every stone circle because it would sort a few irreverent arseholes out.I have to say I'm quite impressed by Barker's concept here; using the feminine energy of a Sheila-Na-Gig to calm a destructive male entity is quite neat. Pity the movie didn't do it justice.

i don't care what anybody says rawhead looks awesome, scared the shit out of me as a little kid. some of the close ups aren't too great but the shot of him poppin out of the dirt or holding the severed head are great
Apparently the original rawhead of folklore was actually an evil spirit or demon with no body. So it would make a body from the bones and rejected parts of slaughtered animals. So it was some kind of cobbled together mess of animal bones and organs.
There is no Rawhead of folklore. It's not like a Banshee. It's just something Clive Barker made up to work through his gay neuroses.

I am kinda surprised the producers didn't try suing Blizzard, for stealing the Rawhead Rex design for the Orcs in the Warcraft series.
Pretty sure the producers want to forget this movie and if anybody was gonna sue, it would be games workshop over the ork design.

It's from 1987. I think you need to read up on how copyright law works.
It's hard to copyright something as specific as a rather generic design like that. Look at all the very similar characters in comics for a good example. Especially since the design of the orcs have changed a little from game to game and orcs in most media are already vaguely similar
For the longest time, I always read the title as RAWHIDE REX and thought "Why does a movie that sounds like it should be about a Cowboy Dinosaur have this goofy ass monster?"
Now that I've heard the title outloud, I feel silly. Still want that Cowboy Dinosaur movie, though.

no joke i saw this movie when i was around 10 years old.. scared the shit out of me and i never forgot it... i got soo very excited when i saw it on this channel i honestly hadn't seen it since (i think it was on some no longer existing cable channel) i loved this review lol.

This is my first time watching one of Brandon's shows and this was hilarious! One of my new favorite TH-cam shows!
MAJOR fan of Barker. Though unlike most Barker fans, I actually love this movie, mostly for how totally 80's cheese it is. Also, aside from the cookie monster eyes and inability to close his mouth, I like the undead anthropomorphic horse in Mad Max gear look of the monster.
Makes me want to see The Keep again.

Rawhead's original design sounds like a character I created quite a few years ago called "Spoogy Sam."
I'll explain the ending. The 'relic' or whatever is an ancient fertility statue. You know, those big titted, big bootied goddess statues. They just didn't paint it well enough to define the shadows, but looking at the monster, I honestly am not surprised they skipped out on their props. Anyway, basically the reason why it works when the woman holds it up and not the dude is because it's supposed to be channeling the power of the goddess. It would probably make more sense if Rawhead Rex actually was a giant penis with teeth. Hashtag feminism and all that.

Well, being that Barker is gay and they outfitted the creature with what looks like s&m leather gear (plus the golden shower scene) I think if they had it end with a woman using the ancient power of womanhood to vanquish a penis monster dressed as a gay stereotype might seem a bit off. ....could be worse, they could have had the American do it with a box of Lucky Charms.
