I’m a nurse. This song is so important to me. I definitely have trauma around Covid and when she says “some things you just cant speak about” I lose it.
I'm an x-ray/CT tech with 23 years experience. As you know, we respond when we have a critical p and stand outside the room until you're ready for the xray. Radiology had to scan/xray almost every covid pt daily that came in until they either got better or died. After 6 months of covid I started getting very silent panic attacks when I see people with air hunger and vomiting around 4 times a shift. I also had probably 4 pts pull down their masks and cough in my face because they were mad about having to wear them. That's what made it unbearable. I started binge watching 9/11 videos so I could see people helping people they didn't know survive a disaster.
The eloquence with which she connected the carnage of a WWII battle and the first wave of covid is masterful. The countless lives lost, the gutwrenching feeling of impending doom and sadness, the fear. This song is a masterpiece. Point blank. The imagery, the haunting quality of the music. It's like time stops. Even without knowing the connection to her grandfather, the first time I heard the "keep your helmet" line I was immediately transported to D Day and the storming of the beaches of Normandy. 2020 really did feel like a war for those in the medical field. Those really were like trenches. She is phenomenal and I don't think enough people who aren't already fans, see that.
There’s something so special about this. I wish you could have watched her explanation of it as well. The first part she talks about her paternal grandfather and how he was in such a bloody battle that he never spoke of it to anyone and his sons did their own research to find out about it. Then she compares that traumatic experience to what healthcare workers were going through every day in the pandemic. It’s heart wrenching. More than that, there’s always been something special about this song. It so uniquely reflects mental health and how it feels when you are getting by on barely any sleep and you’re hoping, dreaming, begging for a single glimpse of relief. This song is transcendent from the lyrics to the beat to the vocals. One of my favorites off of folklore!!
@@Parkjkookie1831 I don't think so. When I search for Jin Epiphany, it's a totally different song, and when I search for a translation of the lyrics, they're totally different. I can find mash ups of the two songs, but nothing with Jin singing Taylor's Epiphany. Do you have a link?
As an RN who lived the Covid front line, I have so much emotion listening to this song. You would come home at night alone and try to process the day and you just….couldnt.
thank you so much for what you’ve done during that time of crisis. i can’t imagine how much stress and anxiety that must’ve brought along, especially with all the unknowns of the pandemic. you’ve helped save countless lives! we appreciate you! ❤️
As an ICU RN during early covid days this is so on point. Our large hospital had 5 ICUs and we literally ran out of body bags due to all the covid deaths. It was truly awful having your patient die and immediately getting another without time to even take a quick breather. We frequently worked 16 hour shifts due to nursing shortage. The worst part was families not being able to be there for their loved one. We did the best we could to comfort patients as they passed… this song hit hard.
I am an ICU nurse too, and this song is hauntingly beautiful. Covid is a time of such raw pain, sometimes I honestly wonder how we all got through it. Holding the hands of so many as I watched them die because I couldn’t stand the thought of someone dying alone. I cannot tell you how many tears I shed, it felt like buckets. Thank you to all who serve, whether it be on the battlefield or in the hospitals…. And thank you to Taylor Swift for recognizing our pain and acknowledging the sadness we felt. ❤
My daughter was working in pt transport (hospital experience to put on her xray school application) and got hired at my hospital (CT tech) right before lockdown. I begged her to quit and change her major. She decided not to quit and stuck it out
The first time I heard this song I instantly got goosebumps, Taylor is a national treasure. This is one song gauranteed to hit me in the heart. All 3 of my kids n my 5 year old grandson had covid and not mild either . It was so hard not being able to hold them , it broke my heart in ro pieces not being able to help them . That's why this song means so much to me 💔😭
This came out in July ‘20. No vaccine, people were getting hospitalized and dying in record numbers - so scary. My family is military and I was so scared for my parents who had COPD. This song just killed me.
Agreed... I have lots of health care/first responders and this track just HIT me. I wanted a video and $$ going to charity so others could really appreciate it too
Nana passed away from COPD and she's been an angel of mine since than. Since someone mentioned that. But Covid was killer and I did my best to keep it positive 2 albums worth. I'm on my vigilante shit and that bitch covid wants to threaten me again.....uff..da....
I love what you said. That's when I fell in love with her too, and started my journey with Taylor! Long Pond Studio Sessions being made during covid! My life long best friend lost her brother during this period right after this came out on Disney +. Thank you for this today Nick
My wife has been an RN for ~20 yrs, now Dir. Clinical Ops, and giving a presentation on the Night Council she co-founded as I'm typing. I will play this for her when she gets home. We're long-time Chiefs season ticket holders, and after the "Swiftie' hoopla last Sunday, this will give a much more important perspective to her popularity. You keep getting me in the feels, Nick.
It’s the best song on folklore by miles.. It’s not an easy listen but as a piece of art oh my god….. It’s one of the finest songs she has ever written…. It’s too stark to be many people’s favourite but my god it’s brilliant. It hits me hard because my late father was in the military his entire life and I know he saw things he couldn’t talk about
Taylor is one of the few songwriter who is very in-touch with her emotions as well as of general public. Years ago she wrote a song called "Ronan" (Red TV), which in my opinion is one of her best song. The song was inspired by a blog written by a mother of a child who was fighting cancer and passed away. The mother Maya Thompson used to blog about her daily struggles and Taylor stumbled upon it. After reading her story she wrote the song and gave it to her. She also credited Maya in her song as a writer so that all the writing royalties go to Maya and the foundation she created for Ronan. This is one of the most beautiful song out there, It is not easy to listen to but it gives you the idea what kind of person and writer Taylor is. She has faced criticism since the start of her career but she never let it change her as a person. If you want please give a listen to this song even without reaction video. Thank you for appreciating Taylor as a person and singer-songwriter in all your videos.
she’s the best songwriter we have these days and you can’t change my mind. in 30 years people will be talking about her lyrics and impact with such honor and admiration i can see it so clearly. at some point everyone will see what a genious this girl is
There is this this soft beeping noise you can hear in the background of the song and I’ve always thought it sounds like the beeping of machines in the hospital, really ties the whole picture and emotions together
My nephew was there in the thick of it and we were just talking about it a couple of days ago. What they went through will forever haunt them. My hearts breaks to pieces every time I think about it. We lost several people to the illness in a short amount of time also and it still hurts as if it was yesterday. This song became a symbol of hope for me during that time.
Quite possibly one of her best songs. Only 20 minutes to sleep is the break time the first responders had during COVID.. then back into the pit to take care of patients as best they could. It was overwhelming
It’s so refreshing to see you put this song in perspective. Very few people really understand the time this was written and came out in the height of covid. As a mom to 3 boys who had to watch as their father died from covid this song hits so hard. It splits me right in half. I was lucky to get to hold his hand in the hospital and say goodbye unlike so many who didn’t, and it still haunts me. What she gave us with this song was such a beautiful heartbreaking gift.
I’m so sorry for your loss. This song and this performance is one of best examples of Taylor’s almost unparalleled ability to connect with people through her songwriting and lyricism.
Taylor loves it when people are able to take her songs and interpret them personally, regardless of what her intentions were for the song. In the Long Pond Sessions video there's usually a short discussion about each song before she sings it.
An extremely good song...also a favorite of mine...thanks for reacting to it, can't wait to get started...Amen brother...what an accurate way to say it.
The impact this song had on me when I read the lyrics on Spotify… Working with veterans and listening to their stories, the wounds within that no one sees, but you know by listening to them just a small piece of what they’ve been through and are going through. I’ve never experienced war but the lyrics to this song cut deep and will inform my work. ❤ peace
This is really sad but beautiful tribute to the soldiers who fought in wars and to the medfical people who had to see all the horrific conditions the pandemic brought . Love your reaction, I was teary eyed too.
As a lifelong swifty I refuse to pick a favorite song, but this one would def be in the conversation if I had a gun to my head and had to pick. As you touched upon, this song has so much emotion behind it. I strongly urge you to check out the interview she did before this recording, from the long pond studio session. Each song had a short interview before she sang them, talking about the song. It’ll give you some context, and melt your heart just a little bit more 🙏🏻
As a society we haven't yet processed and we expected our medical workers to just keep going on and pretending they didn't go through a couple of years of extreme trauma. Many hospitals never provided any debriefing for staff. Not just in USA but in most countries. I am in Australia and I know many nurses that changed from working hospital since then and moved into different areas. So hard for everyone and we had it good in Australia compared to many countries. I love that she writes things from her heart
Yes! Yes! Yes! Nick has returned to Folklore...now for Evermore. Long Pond versions are the best! Ya made me happy Sweetie! I hope you get to see the portion right before the performance when she talks about writing the song. It was based on her grandfather's war experiences he would never talk about and that got her thinking about the Healthcare workers experiencing daily losses and trauma that they may never wish to speak about. You are dead on about this being a beautiful example of her immense talent.
