It was made for use in the Vietnam war to move supplies, people and artillery thru the jungles. No diffs, 4wd and portal axles meant it was really capable and the little eyelets on the wheel hubs were so that they could be thrown from helicopters with a parachute attached! It really was a mechanical mule.

I used to drive those back in 1983 1st of the 3rd air defense artillery fort Campbell KY 101st airborne
Last time I've seen these was when I served with The 101st Airborne in 1981. I believe they were used for artillery.
The One I drove not only had 4 wheel Drive but also had 4Wheel steering, also had a waterproof ignition system with a set of snorkles.
