You can tell someone's age and a bunch of other information with the nric alone. It's incredibly dumb to make it public information like this. Ive had enough of increasing convincing scammers making me distrust every facet of society or risk losing my money and/or identity or worse.

I think unmasking has a very big risk of people using it to hack into your Singpass account as it is the username for your login ID. If you unmask it, wouldn't it be letting the whole world know about your login ID without the password?

    • @Garnishes
      @Garnishes วันที่ผ่านมา +15

exactly. and even if singpass stops using NRIC as ID or banks stop using NRIC as a security question, the issue remains that knowing one’s NRIC means u have access to a whole host of other info tied to your NRIC - whether those info should be public or not
in the first place, our year of birth shouldn't be in the NRIC too. if we want it to be a public identifier, the NRIC should also not be attached to a host of other private info about us.

Does not matter the future plans. Acra needs to answer why is this disclosure required.
As mentioned by PDPC, " The NRIC number is a permanent and irreplaceable identifier which can be used to unlock large amounts of information relating to an individual,” the data privacy watchdog said.
“In today’s digital economy, indiscriminate collection or negligent handling of NRIC numbers can increase the risk of unintended disclosure and may result in NRIC numbers being used for illegal activities such as identity theft or fraud.”
Will ACRA be accountable for these issues that arise?

Think about how this would affect the mental health of those who suffer from various anxiety disorders. Somebody needs to face the music and pay the price of such an oversight, and the ministry needs to issue a public apology as well as explain to the public the changes, consequences and potential effects of no longer masking NRIC numbers. @cookingwithfluffytiny4371 that is not true - you need access to databases and records AND have the IC. You can't phone the bank and find out who owes money or what bank balances are what by just giving an IC number. To find out who lives where and who is married to whom, you need access to home affairs or population databases controlled by the government. You don't use IC for flights - you need a passport, so knowing someone's IC won't help you at all. If all you need is a little work - pick an IC at random and find everything out about them. And then what can you do with this information except stalking?

So with NRIC going public, any hackers have one less concern to hack into our Singpass accounts, gaining access to all government-related details. But you say "there is 2FA ..." Its only a matter of time before a manic programmer managed to bypass 2FA as well; because they already bypassed SMS 2FA.

    G apology means what?
Scenario 1: PDPA using NRIC masking is not necessary now
    1. But ACRA did not obey PDPA masking of NRIC when is launched so now can backdate and say ACRA is ok? Then why only fine other company(Taekwondo company) but not ACRA?
If enforcement of PDPA NRIC masking is not necessary G should return all the fines to those companies who were fined previously.
    2. G should also pay all companies who spends thousands and thousands of dollars for implementing PDPA NRIC masking.
    3. Which joker Minister in which Ministry create such a prank of PDPA NRIC masking that causes public nuisance and wasted resources, the Minister that did this odd to take responsibility and be X.
    3. Did G discuss thoroughly its NRIC masking before implementing it( rather than making a U turn now)? I think we better have opposition to check on them, ownself check ownself clearly dont work!!
Scenario 2: PDPA masking is still necessary now, ACRA made a mistake.
    1. ACRA should be fined like the taekwondo company and more as it already lapse for many years
    2. Those data that were compromised can take up lawsuit against ACRA if they suffers material loss due scamming. Also ACRA should compensate the general public for the potential risk of vulnerability.
    3. Minister JT should take responsibility of anyhow making U-turn.
Whatever it is, someone on the Ministry needs to go for this huge mistake.....

Bank always ask your NRIC together with other questions. Inform the banks next time don't ask for our Nric anymore, why ask for it since nric is no longer private, it has become useless for security measures.

it's a communication problem. for years and years the govt has said that businesses should not indiscrimminately require NRIC numbers because knowing NRIC numbers can allow anyone to also access a host of other information tied to your NRIC number. it’s not JUST about businesses or citizens misusing NRIC as their log in IDs or passwords or security questions. it’s always been said that NRIC connects to other info. it's a data privacy issue. this is at odds with this move to ask people not to mask NRIC numbers. it's going to be an uphill battle. i suggest the govt clarify and contextualise their new statement in light of their past statements so the public can make sense of it and be convinced. admit that there have been signals that were contrary to this new move so at least the public make sense of past and future statements. contradictions from the past will cause the public to be wary if the govt knows what it's doing or not, and it takes a lot to be able to trust that this is the right move before even being convinced.
