Yes, I remember the original done here. Also, this is how it was meant to be (an instrumental) but Quincy Jones, being the genius he is, added lyrics after deciding to have Tevin Campbell do the remake.

Bros Johnson's version stir something deep inside and gives you this warm fuzzy feeling that's not directly tangible, yet still present. Then the boy in Tevin comes along with the closest vocalizations of a young Michael Jackson and interprets those feelings as emotions that leave you happy, sad, forlorn, and nostalgic for times, people, places and loves you can never grasp again.
Bros Johnson provides a pallet of beautiful colors, but Tevin takes that pallet and paints a picture that turns out to be a master piece.
    Ah ... Tevin!!!

This is gonna sound strange, but the original Brothers Johnson version perfectly captures the feeling of growing up in the 70s. So smooth, so calm, yet deep. That was the feeling growing up then that sadly people born after 1980 have no idea how wonderful it was back then. Wasn't perfect times, but people were so nice back then compared to now.

It certainly proves that a hit is always a hit. Siedah's words are very fine, which makes this one of the best songs ever written. Young Campbell brings an ineffable quality to the work but through it all Quincy's masterful craftsmanship can be felt. He has had the touch for decades.

I had never heard the Brothers Johnson version. I like it. It's great. But I can actually sing along from memory because of Tevin. And I get a little choked up thinking about how many graduating classes used this song. Class after graduating class of young Black Americans believing, if only for a moment, in themselves and in the power of believing at a great moment of achievement in their young lives. so Tevin gets my vote.

Tevins voice changed and could no longer provide the vocal range of the original tunes that made him famous. Toward the end of his career he appeared on the Apollo theater and his voice was clearly much deeper and could no longer even do the songs that made him famous. I felt sorry for him as he struggled to hit the range of his yesteryear

Music is made of expression, that being said versitily is the concept because it's how, where, when and what moment, place, space or even mood/set of mind to get to or through something as well as the listeners may be in upon hearing the song or a different version. That's what makes music universal.

Love them both. But a special note on Gerald Albright's sax solo on Tevin's version, so smooth and cool.

I like both but when you add lyrics by Tevin it took it up a notch. I'm going to give it to Tevin by half a hair

Reelblack you are tearing me apart !! Original is chill and put your feet up with a glass of wine music. Tevin's version is so sweet. Its Brother's Johnson for me.

Being born in '75, The Brothers Johnson version was unknown to me, & I consider myself a Jazz Head. Tevin's version came out when I was 16, so I have to give it to Tevin, but Brothers Johnson's is more melodic. For me the lyrics push it over the top, very inspiring.

Look out for #1 album. Still at my mothers house. My sister bought the album in 1976. Played it when Quincy Jones and Tevin Campbell released their version in the summer of 1989. I like both. But I will always love instrumental songs. That’s what we are missing!!! Just listen to the cords and listen what the musician is conveying. RIP George Johnson.
Reelblack, do one Betcha Golly Wow between Stylistics and Norman Conners with Phyllis Hyman. Something about the music of 1976 that was special.

The instrumentation of 70s music puts it above most other decades for me. It's so peaceful.
But Tevin's version came out in my teen years. I love Tevin's strong-for-a-li'l-boy singing.😂😂😂😂, but I never cared for the background children's chorus.

We need to get back to this music as soon as possible, this negative Hip hop bullshit is destroying us. Thanks again. Peace!

Hands down the brothers Johnson brings that tear to my eyes. The innocence of tevin and the lyrics gives it that "United nations" feel

Got to give one of my favorite groups, The Brothers Johnson the nod on this one. The original version and best. Quincy took several of the tunes he produced with them and remade them with other artists. This one is unique and that he gave an instrumental lyrics.

    I did not know that.
Its almost like two different songs. The lyrics with the children give it a different feel. I like the instrumental as an instrumental and the lyric one as a song with lyrics. Campbell's has stronger, more pronounced instrumental foundation. The Bros Johnson's is quieter & more mellow, understated. Campbell's always make me choke up a bit bc of that particular time period. Rough year. But Tevin could never do Stomp & Strawberry Letter. 😄

I had forgotten that the brothers did it first and I did not get theirs but I bought every tape and CD that Quincy made although he did produce the brothers. I operated a limousine service in the late 70s until the crash of 87. I think the brothers did theirs during the last few years of 54 as the disco era was ending. However, today so much of the new music is disco all over again. As the old song states" everything old is new again. And by the way, anyone getting into some exercise routine, the brother's song stomp is great for that. When I would travel to other Countries or in hotels and would have to work out in the hotel's gym, it was great for that repeated.
