There was no auto tunes in the late 80s and 90s either. The fact is TROOP''s version sounds better because it's an improved production of the Jacksons rendition of the song. However, I think Michael's vocals are still unbeatable in it's purity and smoothness. That alone makes me prefer the Jacksons version.
Omg! Micheal's VOICE! So pure, and angelic...I'm going with the Jackson 5, but I do like how Troop made it more of an upbeat tempo. it's a Jackson 5 classic, but Troop did do it justice.
Growing up, all I had heard was the Troop version. When I first heard the original, it changed my whole perspective of the song. The tempo and simplicity made you focus purely on the vocals and Mike's vocals after unchallenged, certainly not by any member of Troop, no diss. So gotta go with J5 for making a beautiful, slightly mid tempo ballad
I gotta go with Troop & heard both growing up but troop killed this song! They honered the Hell out of J5 to the point where people don’t even think about J5 when you hear the song!
Thank you Michael and the Jacksons for laying the footprints for Troop and others. Not many people know MJ sang this first. Troop did great in this remake. It how you honor the pioneers
Now that's how you do a proper cover of an amazing song. Troop did this song justice. If you're going to cover a song, ya better bring the heat making it stand out or don't do it at all. Go big or go home. Lol!
The Jackson 5 emulated the perfect sound of the 70's on this cut, but Troop took is to the next level with a BIGGER sound . Both get an 8.5 in my book. Love that Stylistics sound

Troop's version is so much freer. Nostalgia aside, Steve Russell's adlibing and the falsetto make their cover an absolute CLASSIC. Gotta give it to Total Respect Of Other People, here. They more than did the song justice.
I like Troop's version more, too... sometimes, the remake is better. A lot of people aren't willing to admit that. For instance, Luther Vandross does the definitive version of "A House Is Not a Home." Whitney Houston pretty stole "I Will Always Love You" from Dolly Parton and made it HER song. Also, I think Jodeci does a better version of "Lately." It is what it is.

I dig the arrangement of the remake, and the harmonies are on point for both, but MJ and his brothers earn the nod here. Written and produced by Brian Holland (of THE hitmaker songwriting production team Holland-Dozier-Holland) and Michael Lovesmith, I like how the vocals fall into the song and make it sound like an elementary schoolboy's song. Booker is outstanding as a producer and singer, but the vocals sound "oversung" and it comes off more like a college man's make-out song. It's all in the interpretation as with many covers. You can tell the difference, the Jackson's version pure, clean and a better choice of talent, not to say Troop doesn't have any because they do. There's a reason they call Michael Jackson the King!!!
Troop was more up beat ,, the Jackson was more like a slow song ..I preferred Troop
I Love my Michael, but be honest Troops harmony was so much smoother...
Right. We can love Mike and J5 and still know that Troop did this better.
Nothing about Troop’s version was smoother! But that’s also what makes it unique lol. Troop was in a different era...when Teddy Riley was introducing his New Jack Swing sound; hard beats with RnB and Soul music. J5’s version was the softer, smoother melodic version! 🙂💙
I can’t believe you would asked a question like that
2 different eras, 2 different groups, 2 different sounds. Analog, and Digital. What's to compare? They're both Great.
Ugh!!! i Love both versions...Honestly can't pick one over the other
Hard to go against ‘MJ’, but,.........
TROOP did the damn thing to this song.
This is a great concept doing classic R-B songs back to back to see who did it "better" Good job ReelBlack
I r8 and love Troop, but I'm strictly old school Jackson 5 got this hands down
Both groups are super great.Troop brought that raw R&B 90s feel to the table. But the Jacksons brought that soul straight to the dancefloor
This is too close to call, got to Troop their props but can’t go against J5
Wow!!! Both versions were beautiful.
I like the music to Troops version but I love the authenticity of the singing of Jackson 5's version.
Definitely Troop! Admittedly, I'm being a tad biased because Troop's rendition is the one I grew up with.
I like the Jackson 5 version better vocals with a better production
Really Mike.? You Already know.! Jackson's both sound Good 🌹 Thanks Mike
Hell its the same arrangement!! Only difference is the process of recording with doubling vocals., using updated synths. Only thing they couldnt match was MJ pure voice.
I grew up on J5 but this one instance I felt Troop outdone the original version. Also both are classic and you can’t go wrong with either.
