Good job! Just a suggestion...DON'T use an incoming mail basket. It automatically becomes a dumping ground that will get filled up. Deal with your mail as soon as you bring it into the house...bills in bill box, trash/recycle, shred, time will tell. I have successfully kept my counter clear of mail clutter for a few years now.

    OMG you have Domino Rally!!!
First thing I noticed was your style of paper keeping- mine is much the same. Every so often I gather all the paper into piles on the floor in one room with intentions of sorting purging and filing. It takes me awhile to start the sorting once it’s all gathered. I like the idea of acknowledging making emotional decisions as a hoarder to help look at things differently. Thank you so much for sharing!

I was still paying my bills with a check, too, until someone fished my checks out of the mailbox, washed them, and rewrote them to himself for a lot more. 🤬 Now I do online with a detailed calendar. Mostly works for me, but it was a habit I needed to get used to.

@Waste Not Want Not...that is the reason I told my husband not to write a check and put it in our mailbox. Instead one of us will take it to the post office or drop off in one of the postal boxes that are usually in shopping centers. You can Google it in types of pens to use for filling out a check so that no one can use chemicals to delete what you wrote.

I don't have a hoarding disorder, but honestly, my husband and I struggled with the paperwork as well. What we do now:
    1. go through the mail daily and directly after taking it out the letterbox
    2. write down what we paid directly after we did the shopping and then get rid off the receipts
    3. we have also installed a sign that says "no commercials or free newspapers!" on our letterbox
    4. in case we get a catalogue, we directly tell them to no longer send it to us.
This works quite well for us.

Is there a way to reduce the number of newspaper/flyers that come into the house? How often do you really use those flyers (especially with no spend) and could you reduce bringing those in, less coming in = less to sort through. Also with receipts, check the date that you can return, if it’s past the time when you can return the item (30 days for example) toss the receipt. The only paper that should be coming into the house is bills/documents and kids school work. Stop the flow at the source so you don’t spend energy organizing and dealing with it at all.❤️❤️❤️

A Hoarder's Heart totally get it!! For those important big purchases I used to staple the receipt to the instructions or the manual to calm the anxiety of it. Anything else, like food or small stuff, no need to keep that receipt, if you need to see the transaction always know it’s on your bank statement (unless you used cash) and reframe it, what makes you anxious about throwing out the receipt and work on that. You are doing such an amazing job!

If you go through the basement paper hoard and find a lot that needs to be shredded, it might be helpful to take it to some place like Staples and pay them to shred it. They weigh it and you can put it into the lock box yourself for future shredding. This really helped my sister when she was faced with paper documents when she was moving, and me too. Then I use my little home shredder just to keep up with the weekly stuff, once the bulk of the mess was gone. Otherwise, it's just too overwhelming and time consuming (not to mention making the home shredder overheat!).

If you're having a hard time with starting new habits from scratch, try connecting them to ones you already mastered. For example I'm not the best at remembering that I need to brush my teeth, so everytime I'm using the bathroom for something else I brush. Sometimes it can a bit much but it's better than forgetting until my mouth is super gross.

What was life changing for me - I had to stop the flow of paper coming in - When we bring the mail in, we go straight to the TRASH CAN - Only bills to be paid or something important makes the cut!!! Total game changer. I am no longer a paper hoarder and I love it! I would seriously let weekly ads and coupons go until ALL paper in the house is under control and then you can make one container that is your "coupon system".

So she got one on the floor by her table (bachelor's living ftw) in which she dumps the wast majority of comercial papers into, as well as the newspapers when they are read. Since it is only paper, when full she can take it straight to recycling without having to go through it an extra time.
Keep in mind that envelopes are not recyclable due to the glue and the "windows". :/ I swear, a third of my weekly waste bag are from envelopes due to this.

Some things that helped me was once we stopped living paycheck to paycheck I automated all my bills. We keep a buffer in checking for the rare whoopsie & if that doesn’t cover it the overdrawn amount pulls from a savings account we have at that bank for no fee. We do still get paper copies of bills so that my husband is aware of them but they don’t hang around long anymore. I track things in my phone, bill withdraw dates are in my calendar. In the notes section of my phone I keep a running list of investment balances & loan balances so I don’t need the paper but I can reference dollar amounts if needed (I don’t store account numbers) I simply note Mortgage, IRA, 401k, etc. and abbreviation that tells me the financial institution but isn’t obvious if someone sees it. When I get a new statement the balance is noted in my phone, the payment is already set to auto deduct, if the previous statement is still around I shred it. I also keep a shredder in a handy spot ready to go plugged in so we can shred items immediately & they don’t hang around.

Great job with paper clutter!! Do you save ALL receipts for returns? I find that I only save receipts for more expensive items that could potentially break, like expensive sleeping bag for my kid, washing machine, stuff like that. Any item I paid less than 50 dollars for - the receipt goes directly in the trash, as I find it unlikely that it will break before I get my money's worth out of it. Also I don't buy anything I think that I will want to return in the first place.. This might change when my kid grows and I bring home the wrong size clothes though, haha.

I mean if the mail isn't fullfilling any of your needs and just distracting you and challenging you with the amount and the decision making then why not stop it from coming in and you have to deal with it constantly.

In case you didn't know, receipts can't be put in paper recycling, they need to go in the trash. The thermal paper is coated in BPA (which is how the 'ink' shows up) so it contaminates all the paper recycling. It's something we don't get told to avoid (I don't know why) but it can ruin a whole batch of recycling.
It's frustrating as we end up with so many of them which just get thrown away. Some shops here ask if you want it before it's printed or offer email copies instead which is a good step forward. Just thought you might like to know (if you didn't already, of course) as I know you've been trying to be more environmentally conscious.

@@CoquetFleur that's great to hear, the UK is also included in the BPA ban but ive not seen anything about the alternatives being recyclable (it's not printed on receipts), I'll have to do some more research.
I've not shopped anywhere but the supermarket for the last year so it's not something I've thought much about but we run a business (that's been closed since March 20) and end up with masses of receipts in our accounts so I'll be keeping an eye on it when we eventually get back to work!

To prevent that going forward, I've been retrieving the mail once a week and dealing with it all on that day. I no longer get a newspaper, so I don't have flyers or clippings. I did try that 2 years ago! But I had 2 different companies who had overdrawn my account and I got hit with overage fees 😵 That was when we were living paycheck to paycheck so it might be something to consider again! Thank you so so much my friend ❤️🙏🏻❤️

@@ahoardersheart In this case it is better to have control over when money is withdrawn. I have a cushion in my checking account which is about one paycheck as it means I never have to worry about overdraft fees, an unexpectedly high utility bill or having forgotten to transfer money from savings. This is especially important for me as my income can be quite irregular. Knowing there is always x amount of money in the account takes a way a lot of stress for me. However, in the beginning I had to be mindful about it having a purpose where it was and not spending it.
Over time I just started building all these little safety nets for myself - the cushion, the sinking funds, the emergency fund, long-term savings and it really helps me feel secure that I have contingencies for the small and big things that might happen in my daily life.
Having a cushion and setting up direct deposit might be something you can consider when you are out of babystep 3 but as long as your system works for you there really is no real reason to change it.

I still get paper bills (with the idea that my husband would see them if anything ever happened to me). But I pay them online out of my checking account. I set up a payment address for everybody that I pay, and then set up an automatic payment for the minimum each month, on the date that I choose. This way, I never miss the minimum payment. But when the paper bill comes, I change the amount to the full payment amount, and double-check the date. The advantage is that I can see all my payables listed by the time they are going to get paid, right there online in my checking account.

@@ahoardersheart I agree with you, I don't like automatic payments deducted from my bank account. But I do pay my bills on line and I do it once a month. Even if the bill isn't due for another 2 weeks I still pay all of them at the same time on the 3rd of every month. I printed out an excel sheet that has one column that I check mark once I pay the bill on line and another column that I check mark a few days later to make sure that it cleared in my bank. Once both columns are all checkmarked then I know I've paid every bill for the month and everything has cleared in my bank. I find this system better than automatic payments because what if you are short one month, automatic payment would not be good for that circumstance.

We throw away all sale ads and junk mail as we walk into the house. The bills get put in the 'to pay' location. Before we do anything else - still carrying my handbag, lol - junk into recycling and bills in their home. Anything unusual goes onto my end table to see what it is that night. I had to tell myself that I am not bringing anything new into the house, so it doesn't matter what is in the sale ad. If I need to buy something, I go online to my local stores and look up the prices. I swear this saves me money in the long run, because the volume of things I am buying has greatly reduced in the past few years. So it just doesn't matter if I could have saved $3, I probably would have bought something else by going into the store.

I don’t know how, but I hardly ever get any unwanted mail. I just get my bills, a couple of magazines, and the once a month local dollar saver coupon book. That’s almost exclusively it. Def makes it easy to deal with paper as there really is none. I would say to unsubscribe from anything that comes in that you didn’t ask for.

In my country, there are no/no and yes/no stickers, to let the mailmen know if you want non-addressed (paper) advertisements and addressed (but not personal) ones. I have a no-no sticker on my mailbox, because the ads are available online (we dont need physical coupons here) and I only get mail that is actually adressed to me. It makes it easier to keep up :)

We only get about one thing in our mailbox a week. Also, how about automated billing? That way you won’t have to remember to pay your bills = less for you to think/worry about.

At the beginning on 2020 I gathered ALL the paper clutter in our home it was massive. I had 5 full bankers boxes, 1 full laundry basket , 1 small wicker basket and 2 portable file folders. I was so good when I first started and got through the 5 bankers boxes but then hit a wall. I picked it back up this month. I went through the large laundry basket and now I am down to just the wicker basket and the 2 file folders. I have been watching video's on the Sunday Box and when I finish my initial sort I am going to come up with a simple filing system and start using a Sunday Box. @@ahoardersheart my trick is to use the bank bill pay function so I am in control of when and how much I pay...and I set them all up in there to pay by thei due dates with their typical amounts ... then, let’s say the electric is more money this month, I just pop in there and adjust the amount, but regardless, even if I forget, the bills are never late even if they are slightly too ouch or too little - but this way I see them all there in my projected balance and I can see what is going out of my account soon. I have paperless billing for everything so no paper bills and then I can log into my account say once a week and see that oh xyz bills will pay next week, let me see if I need to make any adjustments - can easily look at the paperless billing email to check the bills coming up to adjust amounts. This has made life so much simpler -no bills to miss and I am always able to see and control my account.

I’m a paper person - I like physical books, jotting notes down, processing thoughts and projects on paper. But I have switched to electronic for the vast majority of paper items - bills on automatic pay and e statements for my bank, coupons on apps, saying no to receipts. It’s not my nature, but it has made it MUCH easier.

Hello Ms Heart! I personally keep receipts in a reverse file system - the moment it gets in, I decide how long it should be kept and then put it in the folder for that time. For example I have a little folder thing for receipts that can be thrown out in january 2022 - And once the day comes it is suddenly so much faster to go through.. Coupons are not quite as big a thing in europe... so i sadly have nothing i could say to that, that noone else said already - and that would be keep a paper recycling bin around. Mine is actually next to the entrance and i just throw whatever i don't need in there at once.

my opinion on advertisements? evil. the thing about "coupons" is that you look at them and are like "ooo this is on sale. and this. and this. and this" and you end up getting things you didnt need in the first place just because its discounted. but overall you then spend more then you meant to. its better just to toss them out and not even look and spend the full price on what you ACTUALLY needed. dont let companies tempt you into other products.

Paper clutter is a hot topic in our house! I used to hoard my papers and when I finally decided to combat this issue I had 30ish pounds of paperwork to shred. Knowing myself as I do I knew I wasn't going to take the time to shred it all so I took it all to Staples and they shredded it for me. Yes, it cost money but it was worth it. Since then I have invested in a privacy/security stamp so I can just recycle it. I open the bills as they come in daily, throw away the envelope and advertising, and right then and there I stamp my private information. This has been a game changer! I have been able to keep up with the bills and other paperwork for 3 years now.

You should hang that receipt binder by your front door! That way when you come in from shopping you can immediately put it in the binder and then if you need to return something you can pull the receipt before you leave the house. Then once the year is over you can recycle the contents!
Also, you might want to think about setting up automatic payments online. All of my bills are automatic, I don’t need to think about them as on their designated days they come out of my account and I get an email about it!
    Hope this helps!

I usually lose everything. I have two different due dates every month. On 5th and on the 20th of every month. Everything due on the 5th gets paid with the money of the 3rd and 20th with the money of the 15th. I just write down everything on one to two papers. Then run it thru the phone and make payment on the run or over the phone. If a bill is lost it doesn't matter I look at last month payment list and I call an catch it.

I have every document I have ever gotten in paper, since 2001 with a few before. Multiple jobs, paper pay stubs, in one job I regularly rented a cargo van as a broker courier. I had an encyclopedia stack of van rental invoices, 3 papers each. I have every rent receipt I ever got, except maybe 10 mixed into this 100lbs of paper I am sorting through and shredding. Monthly bank and credit card invoices. I found and kept my first paystub from a job I started in 2001 and spent more time at than any other job. I had to shred a few printed pictures of girlfriends. I felt bad, but I have them digitally somewhere. I have so much paper from the last 23 years, when I grab a random stack to sort, it's like an archeological dig. It's like looking at layers of sediment to determine when the asteroid hit and when the volcano blew up. I grab a stack to shred and it's like I find all Dynamex paper, and not far away my employee tag, and I'm like uh..... here we go.... what a mess. Heartbroken. There's some hand written emo babble sad ah it a chick. Talking about stitches and working from 7:30 - 3:30. I know I have everything because I would not just discard this type of thing. I throw it into a garbage bag or a duffle bag, so I know I probably have every rental receipt except maybe 10 - 15 for one reason or another. It's astounding.
I'm sorting and shredding. I'm tired of having it. Ugly waste of space. I love discarding worthless garbage that takes up space. Like the coat closet. Just throw everything in the garbage. Most of it IS garbage, it's like the paper. Worthless and needs to go. Decluttering.
