As a child of a hoarder, I commend you for your courage. I also appreciate your candidness about what is happening for you mentally and emotionally and physically as you go through the process of passing on the joy. My mother has been working towards clean out/making her home manageable. When she asks for help I always go and help in any capacity. Watching your videos has given me an insight into how her mind works and is helping me be more gentle in my approach. I can honestly say, it seems like when a hoarder is REALLY ready for help they are definitely more open to help. There have been times when I went in to her home in the past and literally tossed everything, which was a disservice to my mother and I didn't understand that at the time. I look forward to a future video of your famies reactions to your progress! I also hope you are doing well with your no spend challenges! Those no spend challenges have made me analyze where I am spending and have been very helpful for me too!

This is definitely a win! Seeing all that paper to be recycled or shredded was so satisfying. Goodbye clutter :D

I am planning to take a tote or two that I have stuff to the brim with papers, to my sister's house this weekend while I dog sit. I started watching paper clutter videos tonight to help me prime my mind. They weren't doing the trick. So I decided to search using the word hoarder (my sister's word) and papers. I came across your video. I'm about halfway through. You're going through the Ikea catalogs and I start getting anxious and almost hyperventilating. I get it it's all what I intend to "sometime" ... Thank you. I'll keep watching.

Paper is one of the biggest sections of what I have. About three years ago, I got a sudden urge to work through old magazines and papers. I've noticed the process I used then is similar to yours - small sections and taking breaks whenever I started feeling anxious, overwhelmed, annoyed, etc.
This process really worked for me and I've been thinking of trying to implement it in other areas, such as clothes. Slowly I've been letting go of some clothes - I have a recycle and donate bag, and a bag I want to sell. But I've only added things once I'm ready. Still very difficult!
Regarding my paper hoard, I managed to fit what once was stashed in a large box into a somewhat smaller one and let go of papers and magazines I had held on to for YEARS, since my teens. I think I had two to three recycle bags at the end of the day. I paged through all my magazines to see why I kept it. What I noticed is that I kept many magazines for a handful of articles or crosswords. So I just tore those out and fit them in one binder - I felt so proud. I haven't brought much in since then, I still have a lot of magazines I still want to read (but haven't, but I shall some day 😶).

I'm a paper hoarder I hate how this depletes me when I try to tackle the situation. I have old newspapers, magazines and letters, and note books. I understand. Others can say just throw it away. To a hoarder they have to touch every single paper. This sucks.

I found this series while randomly flipping through cleaning videos (I like to watch them while doing my own cleaning!) and just wanted to say I'm really impressed with your commitment, and your positive attitude. From the outside, hoarding can sometimes seem mystifying, but I think we all experience a lot of these drives to different degrees. Thank you for sharing your experience, and helping me be a little more empathetic in the process. :)

I hate paperwork and we get new papers in the mail every day. I try to immediately trash/recycle daily junk mail. Bills to be paid I like to put in my purse with my check register so I won't lose them or forget. Sometimes filing is a pain but it really only takes a minute so I try very hard to file the same day so papers aren't lost. You did a great job and now that you have a system in place it should hopefully be a lot easier to handle.

You got so much done! You're doing so amazing! When you were going through your house pointing out all the boxes of paper nestled in the corners it reminded me exactly of when I did that!
And what a beautiful recycle pile you had at the end!!
(Oh dear. The following is an insanely long comment... fair warning. No need to read it if you've already found a good organizing system that works for you.)
So you asked about systems people use for keeping paper.. here's mine. This is a paper organizing system that works for a hoarding mind. Ultra organized minimalist folks who aren't easily distracted by pretty things will likely give you all kinds of advice that will look very pretty in the short term, but just won't work, for you (or me). Been there, done that.
So here's my rough and ready paper filing system. (And most of this I got from a great book I love.)
    1. Sentimental box: Kids drawings, old journals, misc that you will absolutely never be willing to get rid of but there is no practical purpose whatsoever for keeping. If you never took it out of the box it would not cause any problems in your life. I keep mine in the living room because I put things in here randomly as they come up. Like movie ticket stubs. But tucked away in my keeper trunk, I always I know exactly where they are, and I can pull them out if I get the blinding urge to stare at a bunch of old sentimental stuff.
    2. The 'now' tray: Stuff you must absolutely deal with within the next month. Put it somewhere where you can easily get to it and where you see it everyday, likewherever you sort mail.
    3. The 'maybe' box: so many 'maybes', so little time. This sits under my dining room table because that's where I sort mail.
This is a 'six month' trash can. That means every 6 months I pick up the top quarter of it, put it on the table, and put the restin the recycling bin, then I put the top quarter back in the Box. 90% of my keep items go in this box. Electric bills, credit card bills, ads for Stuff, receipts... Storage systems just don't work for hoarders because we keep everything if we're given half a chance. So don't give yourself a chance. This is the most important box. This is the box that changed my life. Now the stuff that used to be piled on all my tables and stuffed and millions of boxes around my house has a place to go.
(Oh, and if you're worried about putting credit card statements or ads for credit cards in this box, don't. Easy fix: put kitchen scraps and a tall glass of water into the bag with it when you throw it out... in the regular trash. Nobody's digging through that moldy disgusting mess. Plus, you're helping it biodegrade.)
    4. Vital records files: Employment history, birth certificates, important dates, recipes, medical file, Insurance & property records. Also a folder for with details on each utility, credit, and bank account. Do not put the statements in these folders because you will never clear them out. Been there, done that. This is the stuff you might actually need in the long term future.
    5. The Generously Sized 'To Be Filed' box (think double shoe box size): I have to be realistic about myself. When I have any piece of paper in my hand if it doesn't take me less than 5 seconds to put it away then I wont. that's why I keep this box in my living room. Also, my filing cabinet is not in my living room or by my desk. Optimally it would be, but even then I think I'd still need the 'to be filed' box. It's terribly easy to get distracted by more important things than filing a piece of paper. Put the to be filed box in your living room or wherever you do paperwork tasks, then carry it to your filing cabinet when it's time to file.
By using this system you'll know that everything in your to be filed box must be something you want to keep in your Vital Records files, so even if it takes you a month or two to get to filing it, it shouldn't fill up too quickly. (Um.. I may have let mine sit there for a year before. But no biggie, that's how long it took to fill it up.)
    And that's it! Easy!
    6. Ooh! Wait! Magazines!:
Put the magazines you want to read but not keep forever in your magazine bin, but upright, so you can see the spines. Then every time you take one out to flip through it put it back in your side of the bin when you're done with it. Gradually the ones farthest from you will become the ones you're not interested in anymore. Every month pull out a handful of them from the back and flip through to see if there's any of them you want to read now and put those back in the front, then recycle the rest of the handful. Tell yourself you're making room for new wonderful magazines and that you're only allowed to have as many magazines as will fit in your bin at one time, so if you want to buy a magazine you have to think which magazine am I willing to give up.
It's been about five years since I implemented this system - and I'm not buried under new boxes of paper and magazines, so it must work - at least for me. :)
Sorry about the long comment! Good luck!

I LOVE THIS!!! 😍 I am a visual person as well, and if I can't see it - I forget all about it. (Not a good thing - too many projects going on that I want to refer back to...) I have old magazines from the 1990's (Traditional Home - and I still like a certain classic style that I try to aim for) - old Coldwater Creek catalogs (before they reopened) because I like to look through them - I have vision boards for things - and have them all yet because they are vintage, I suppose. I see sets of back issues of old magazines and catalogs I have on Ebay for $$$. I have sold items online through an Etsy shop and on Ebay - but the fees and paperwork are kind of a pain. (Craigslist can be hit or miss for me.)
    - Sheesh... am I a hoarder?! 😥 I don't think so... I just need to keep it all more organized.... and edit 5-10 things into a black plastic trash bag once a week or so... ( baby steps!) Dropping stuff off to a donation place is doable... but I kinda fear getting rid of something that I might need. ( A room to try and copy as we remodel our house...) It is nearly impossible to find photos online of certain interior designers whose classic work and style I love. Some have written books, thankfully... but most live on only in back issues of magazines. ~
Thanks for the upload... and the laugh... (someone with actual STUFF) and I'm just letting you know that I am SO with you!!! 😎

In previous vids, you showed that you have essential oils. EO's are amazing for anxiety. These are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. You can apply them topically if you wish, or just keep a diffuser going while you work. Lavender
, Roman Chamomile, Peppermint, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli Oil, Geranium, Lemon, Rose Oil, Sandalwood, Valerian Root.....I am not a hoarder by any means so I do not understand the need to keep paper. The only papers that are NEEDED are receipts you used as deductions on your taxes (only need to keep 5 yrs at most of those too) vital statistics (SS cards, birth certs, marriage license etc) and only ONE MONTH of paid bills. All bills show your balance each and every month on the new statement. Everything can be found on line now, so no need to keep manuals etc. We have all our paper (family of 9) in one small (12"x12"x8") strong box. I also only kept "treasures" of my children that could be used or displayed.

Also. You can keep the old school system with the paper bills but instead of writing the check and mail. Pull the bill, pay it online then file. You are just saving the step of check, envelope and stamp. That’s how I have my system set up. And I was able to stop buying so many checks. ❤️
also,GREAT JOB on the paper!! I will also recommend to revisit
The kids school work save piles periodically. I also saved EVERYTHING with my first kiddo and when we had to move from Japan back to the states, there was soooo much and it was a Japanese school and their work was so different. Especially these incredible craft projects. That took up a HUGE tub. We kept 3 of our favorite took pics of the rest and had to recycle the rest. It was sad but there was literally no room on our pack out for it. After that I started sorting through his papers and picked truly the BEST artwork and some of his Japanese calligraphy work. That was sooo hard. Now when unpacking their backpacks I now can only keep “the best” and recycle the rest. Your progression in this is ASTONISHING! I literally have clients who have seen counselors for years and haven’t made this much progress! So proud of you!!

I have recently started throwing water 🚰💦into these papers and watch the ink wash out any important info identifying my families personal info.
I've seen my paper stashes disappear and makes me feel really great that progress was made & my time was not wasted just being idle in my vehicle. Try this! I even do it as I wait in my vehicle for my husbands drs. appointments. 📝📰📃🗞♻️🚮🗑

Paper Hoarder as well trying to get important information on the computer, either scan it or create an Excel Worksheet, it has to go. It has become so overwhelming, transferring it from room to room, or hiding the hoard in the basement is a disease. No one needs old pay stubs, old coupon books, old Bills or Newspapers and Magazine from decades ago.

I'm late to your vlog. For the children's things.take the backpack from their school year and put all the sentimental for the year in the backpack and then store the backpack. If your children like to shred and you're comfortable with it, let them have some fun shredding. Definitely need to let them sort their own things. If you're attached to certain things keep them until you feel you can discard them. You've really done great and I think a lot of people have hoarder tendencies but they don't have the anxiety about discarding. Keep up the good work.

Paper clutter was a thorn in my side!!! I just went through what I thought was all my paper and I ended up with 6 file boxes of stuff that needed to be shredded ( I currently have 2 left) but while going through my house I have found more! I found a bin of paper and mail from 2015 in my linen closet...what the heck...how did it end up in there? What was I thinking.
I have decided to put paper clutter on my schedule for Weds ( my anti-procrastination day) .
I don't get any more magazines. I go through the mail every day now and shred as it comes in.
Make your vision board on pinterest! Long term , find a place in your file cabinet.

I need the most inspiration to tackle the paper...I run a home business and the paper is everywhere, boxes in the basement, boxes in my office, a wall of filing cabinets...it all needs to be gone through, old bills recycled, the important ones organized. It's much more than what you had...the largest category in my house. I foundered in paper when I did Konmarie myself...still in progress.
Thank you for showing a large project in progress!

Huge well done. You must be exhausted after that! I couldn't have managed that in one day. I break it down into smaller chunks.
An alternative to shredding is to have a small bonfire for the personal papers going out. We have a metal bucket we use if I have a lot to go out at once.
Paper is a nemesis of mine. As I've been in debt before, even if its been paid off for a decade, have kept stuff to show I've paid it off but I'm managing that a lot better now.

When the mail comes in, I go through it right away and recycle ♻️ all envelopes and junk mail. Bills get paid and filed, not lost. When I got a PO Box it became even easier because they have a recycling bin and half the paper isn’t even brought into the house.

Paperwork is an area that is difficult for most people even without hoarding problems. I found my paper the worst to sort through...yet the most satisfying once it was done. I went through it a second time and parted with even more of it. I listen to the Clutter Fairy on TH-cam and that helped clarify which bits are important and which bits aren't. I shouldn't find this area difficult at all as I work in a busy finance department and I organize everyone else there, but at home I had piles of paper building up. Once I got rid of the piles...they have not returned. If I open something...I won't leave it on the side. It goes in my handbag rather than it being on the kitchen side lol. That way, when I take 5 mins at work to sort my handbag, it goes straight in the recycling or shredding. There are only a few bits that need to be filed at home or actioned. 90 percent of paper clutter is just clutter and can go. Great work! That was one mammoth task!

Actually, I should say “recovering hoarder!” Lol I was not this good at letting go a year ago. If I gave my stuff away, it would trigger panic attacks in me. Sometimes I still feel one coming on and I need to stop and do my “calm down” exercises for anxiety. (My hoarding stems from my anxiety). Now that I look back...it goes up and down. During bad times: I hoard more to keep myself “safe.” In good times (like now) it’s easier to let go! Best of luck in your decluttering!! I am fully cheering you on ♥️♥️♥️

I had this thought when you were talking about vision boards: what about a vision ROOM? you've been doing so well with these videos, and I wondered if there were spaces in your house that you felt represent your vision already, or that are pretty close? Maybe your house itself could be the "vision canvas" instead of creating another object or keeping other objects around to be a stand-in for that vision. Or maybe it could be a helpful thought exercise as you go through your things: does this item fit into the vision? Anyway, you're doing great and I'm very impressed by your paper progress! I think paper is really hard to get rid of, too. I'm so anti-paper I don't even use notebooks because I don't want to have to struggle to get rid of them later! I write down quotes and thoughts on my computer instead haha.

I have the same humorous thought about security and my own mess! ha ha! and I do the same thing with magazines I keep them for vision boards which I start and perfectionism does not let me finish...Also the ikea catalogs for me are organisational inspirations, and the internet is not the same, as you said there must definitely be a sensory thing to this...I will also research it on my side...back to watching...by the way I think you did well to wait for the papers in the basement...they are very probably not as urgent/important/recent as the others, so they can wait right? I am also old school, I need to read things on paper rather than on screen and I use a paper agenda for my work appointments rather than my smartphone...WOW!!! I know I’m still months behind in videos, but I wonder if konmarie is the best choice for you. I noticed you had a Fly Lady book. If you do the process correctly, first you go through your home decluttering. I believe she also talks about keeping one bin for sentimental for each family member. All that process can take a while and that’s okay, progress not perfection. Then you establish quick and easy cleaning routines, which include continual mini declutters.
Also you could check out Pinterest for lots of organizing ideas (like cords, electronics etc) .

I organize taxpapers and similar in big envelopes. One years paper go into one envelope. And envelopes are in a drawer. As tax issies go old in 7 years, I can just burn the whole envelope at once.
