  • The technique of connection in partnered swing dancing may look mysterious but here's a way to see what's going on.

    My last video was about axes, so I feel I ought to get away with uploading another dance video. This one doesn't give you any moves as such, but instead attempts to explain how dancers connect with each other on the floor so that they become able to lead and follow complicated but improvised moves. If your connection is good, you can get away with (almost) anything.
    If you have a short length of stout metal chain, you can use it to connect you, as I used the belt in this video, and then try dancing as a couple with the aim of keeping the chain taut so that you never hear it rattle.
    The Lindy hop is a 1930s swing dance, often called the 'jitterbug'.
    This video was shot with the help of Laura Halttunen of The Jazz Factory, Helsinki's primary dance studio for the swing dances.

    I built a sound-baffle around the camera, which blocked out most of the echo from the large room, but blocking it all out was impossible.
    Lindybeige: a channel of archaeology, ancient and medieval warfare, rants, swing dance, travelogues, evolution, and whatever else occurs to me to make.
    You can now buy the music I use over the end-plates of my videos, which was written as the theme music for The Adventures of Stoke Mandeville, Astronaut and Gentleman: lindybeige.ban...

      The spandau is too energetic of a dance. The tempo is too up beat. Much more of an expert's routine.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't know about blindfolded competitions, but I have indeed danced blindfolded (Cuban salsa) with a girl I had never met before. It's odd at first glance ;) but it's really no trouble and after a minute or so, it becomes rather effortless.
      Your body I reckon, just needs time to adjust to pitch black. If there's plenty of room that you don't have to worry about bumping into someone or something, really, all the communication is in the hand connection.
      Naturally, I couldn't use the 'direction of view' leading (she sees where I'm looking and gives her free hand on the spot) but, some other more common figures that require two hands, we connected without too much trouble as she would bring her hand to where I would expect her and vice versa. :)
      What's even more amazing, you don't even need the physical connection, a
      good follower can just observe your motion (providing you give clear
      directions) and dance the steps/figures you had in mind.

      Some of the best martial artists also make the best dancers. It's the same theme of timing, rhythm, distance, footwork and body mechanics, just that one is for leisure and spectacle the other for violence. A lot of skills cross over between the two.
      (It's also why people are entertained by fight scenes in movies unknowingly as it triggers the same parts of the brain that get pleasure from dance, choreography and emotion.)

    • @roymarshall_
      @roymarshall_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably also why men who can dance well are sexy, its a sign of fighting ability to the caveman brain.

    • @Mr-Tibbster
      @Mr-Tibbster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Roy Marshall
      Well that is to do with sexual performance, being good in bed = good rhythmic ability. Since women are not the same as men, faster does not equal more pleasure, but rather a consistent rhythm on the right spot gives her pleasure. Women always say "like that, right there" or "harder" but rarely do you hear "speed up".
      My experience here has always been right and it's why many men struggle in getting their female partners to climax because they are getting them there and then they apply their male mentality to it and think "oh I best go faster now to get her to finish" and it ruins it as the rhythm has been broken, hence the woman is always saying "I was almost there", but doesn't get there. (It's also why people say porn is completely unrealistic and fake, because it is)
      So good dancer = good rhythm = he's good in bed.

    • @lindybeige
      @lindybeige  8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Dancers and fighters use most of the same skills of movement. The biggest difference is that in fighting you are trying to deceive your opponent, whereas in dancing you want to inform them.

    • @stalhandske9649

      No need to hush, most of us Finns are very aware of that. A large portion of Northern Russian gene pool is very largely Finno-Ugric (or Uralic, id you like), actually - this being a heritage of those tribes that habited the area before the Russian migration beginning in the 6th century onwards. The results of intermarriage and/or language shift are most clearly visible in the frequency of (very Finnic) haplogroup N3.
      Now it might be more sensitive matter in Russia to stress this fact, as from stressing this fact also points towards clear bipolarity in modern Russian gene pool: the Northern with Finno-Uralic elements and Southern, shared by Ukrainians and Belarussians. Sensitivity of the matter comes, obviously, from the ongoing war in Ukraine and ethnic-cultural propaganda aired on both sides.

    G'day,
    I see..., hmmn, so the trick to ensuring one's woman remains suitably responsive, and instantly follows wherever she is led, is to hold her in Tension or keep her under Pressure, either way will work, as long as the Stress is maintained...?
    How very curious..., really...; that's quite a fascinating insight.
    If this gets out, then the Politically-Correct Feminist-Activists will probably join the Methodists in seeking to have Sex banned outright by Decree, because Sex might lead to Dancing ; and Dancing is clearly seen to be a Repressive Chauvinistic Ritual, employed by the Patriarchy, to keep Women in their Place...(!).
    But, it only looks that way if one closes one eye, and squints with the other...
    ;-p
    Ciao !

    This, weirdly, explains very well the basic principles of the hammer throw technique. Far better than "sit down and relax upon the torque" I like to use when teaching kids at my athletics club. Right, from now on, I'll use that way of reasoning, I'll just add the "do this wrong and you'll break your own jaw" bit.

    I am getting into partner dancing, including the Lindy hop. Then TH-cam suggests Lindybeige! The last time our paths crossed was a presentation about the Chetniks and Partisans in Yugoslavia in WW2. But doing the Lindyhop makes perfect sense though: WW2 - Lindyhop. Same period. Same eclectic interest. I love it. If Lindybeige can dance then I will get good at it too.

    when you are individually proficient in an art, and you meet someone that's equally proficient on their part, chances are you both know the basic ever-present movements or techniques.
    happens to me in online play.... whenever I join a group with people I don't know, I start doing basic plays, until somebody picks one up, gives it a twist and makes up a combo.... that sets it as a sequence for the next move.
    so it goes move A, move A, move A, move A + B?, AB!, then AB for a while, then _ABC_.
    when the game or dance has a defined set of moves, it's easy to mix them around.
    take football (soccer) players who play at a public field, with people they don't know.... how does the side winger know there's a guy ready to head the ball into the goal? probably just a "here!" gesture with a hand.... just a raised hand, that's all it takes.

    This was a really neat video talking about the tension and supporting each other. As I don't quite know much more about early 20th century dance I don't have much to add. However, have you ever thought of doing a video on Heraldry? There's quite a big industry here in America about companies selling merchandise on "family" coats of arms, and it frustrates me to no end to see this ancestral plagiarism.

    Ballroom is led through the lower body, the frame is a reaction to the lower body. If you try leading through the upper body the lady will have problems maintaining balance whilst following. Latin is mostly the same, so I'm guessing Lindy Hop too.

    iv got to say I personally couldn't give the smallest shit about dancing (not nocking it its just not for me) however very interesting video, because in my opinion fighting and dancing are so similar, only with a different goal. with both you need to feel and anticipate your opponents (or partners) moves. this video really emphasizes it, imagine instead of holding hands and dancing the lindy hop, you instead have locked swords (or an arm in a martial art) with an opponent. you feel their moves and through your own understanding of combative arts you may be able to predict their next move. again I hate dance (because I personally am shite at it) but it is a great comparison to martial arts in many ways. (edit) also lindy I love your trousers where did you buy them? or did you make them like your shirts?

  • @bensweiss

    Hmm, Lindy Hop in some senses is a bit more formal than House music, dancing wise, in the sense that often people pair up.
    If two people are very good dancers and watch each other and the space around them then their dancing can seem choreographed when what they are actually doing is slowing down, stepping cautiously, moving slower, or letting the partner perform a move or flourish or working to enhance a partner's flourish or move. That is what I and dance partners would do and people would seem to think that that my partner and I had practiced beforehand when we had not.
