That delicious psuedo-RTS/Turn Base game was so damned awesome, a shame it only had one sequel on the N64.
Did you ever play Dragon Force on the Saturn or Brgandine on the PSX? You would likely enjoy those as well.

Looking forward to trying out The Last Spell in the future (probably after it leaves Early Access). I watched a bit of it on TH-cam, and I like its focus on groups versus one-on-one encounters. Taking out several enemies with a single strike is very satisfying to me, especially in a turn-based game.
I do also like the look of Banner of the Maid; I think I might wishlist that one. I’m finding tactical combat systems more appealing when it comes to RPGs, because it seems like the genre struggles with action. I’ve started playing Tales of Berseria recently, and while I do really enjoy the game’s plot, the gameplay is dragging it down for me. (I’m hoping the Mass Effect trilogy won’t have that issue, since I’m not big on shooters as well.)
This was a month ago so you probably already know but ME1 has rough gameplay and IMO ME2 is very fun combat.

Fae Tactics, Banner of the Maid, Tactics V and The Last Spell all look sumptious !! A strong haul in this collection of indie games. Guess this genre is rich pickings for creativity?! Oddly I like them in that order given which matches the video's "count-down". GJ.

Fae Tactics is just so great but it's just a few steps short of masterful; the story is meh but it serves the purpose of that crunchy gameplay🤤 the hidden tech, system mechanics, and depth of gameplay is so diverse, purposeful and synergize well. I'll check out the other titles on the list tho.👌🏿
I hope to God they make a sequel and add in a survival mode or something that makes me want to spend more time in the game, a higher difficulty lvl or more aggressive AI with more varied behaviour patterns would be nice, cosmetic unlockables cause I really like the pixel art...and they could get a better writer or a bigger budget for the story, but we know how that goes😔. I really like this game and it would be a shame if this ends up being a one-shot instead of a series.

Well, story in Fae Tactis is not that great, at least not so original, but it have some nice twists. Surprisingly dark for such are colorfull game, i must say. Like cult of Dagon quest , or truth beyound Seraphim bots. Altough all this doppleganger theme start to annoy pretty fast. Otherwise, the dialoge writing is quite good, they not that pretentious like in many other "save-the-world-epic" games, and characters are likible and vibrant. Especially antoganist of the game - Peony. At first glance she look pretty annoing, even dumb in some way, but as story goes on, she starts to invoke symphaty.
@@PuffZombie NGL Wetlands is my favourite map for that reason. I appreciate how it shook up the tone and it's theme song is amazing arguably the best track in the ost.

Have you ever hear a game called Troubleshooter Abandoned Children? It's one of the most content rich and mechanically deep tactical RPG I ever played.

Came here expecting Horizon's Gate(Which im playing rn), was not disappointed. Nice that Fell Seal got a dlc, but dunno if i could do another playthru after doing a 100% playthru the first time.

I remember watching the previous vid but somehow numbers 9-6 were all new to me. Despite me even having Sword Legacy: Omen in my Library. Dunno whether I am just blind or forgetful but either way this was a nice haul for the wishlist.
I loved Banner of the Maid, and I had a lot of fun with Mercenaries Blaze, too. Never played FF Tactics, but I've been a fan of this genre since Shining Force and (especially) the Langrisser games which I played in Japanese without being able to understand much of them and still loved them. Glad this genre is still alive and kicking.
Do yourself a favor and play FFT asap. Arguably one of the best stories ever told in an RPG, and the mechanics are top-tier.

The first RPG Sim or RPG Tactics I played was the best for me. I played it on my SEGA GAME GEAR, SHINING FORCE: THE SWORD OF HAJYA. Anyone here who played this game?
There's a Sega CD remake of this game and its remake (+ an extra bonus chapter).
Always found it weird that this one was translated officially, and not the Game Gear SF that featured children of SFI.
There is a third Game Gear game that tries to link SF I and II that is also pretty cool.

CAmelot software who also made Golden Sun cut their ties with SEGA during the 90's that is why Shining Force 3 was the last one we got.

Ahuh! It is not Final Fantasy Tactics that is the best in this RPG sub genre. I hope they call it again in our time today RPG Sim / RPG Simulation. It feels like playing chess. It is called with many names Tactics, Strategy man, there are a lot of meanings when you say these words so for me, it is better to call it again as it was originally called in the past RPG Sim.
Horizons gate is in my top favourite games. Add as many workshop mods as possible. my playthrough was 100+ hours ! Cant wait to see what he does next.

I agree with both #2 and #1, great games, worth the money for sure.
Obviously the best 'Like FFT' game out there is still TO:LUCT and for obvious reasons - the same team is behind both games. Both true masterpieces.
Yes, LUCT is one of the game that to this day I am still playing. The sheer amount of content inside the game, the numerous hidden secrets, the different classes, and the story mechanic makes it very replayable.

You forgot the most important game: The Dungeon of Nahuelbeuk: Amulet of Chaos - a funny RPG parody with perfected strategy gameplay.

Horizon's gate is hard, first time played it took me a few times to get used to the mechanics, trading and keeping tracked of the quest is a hassle but it was fun nonetheless. Fae tactics is a must play, really good mechanics, story, and pixel art 👍

Fell Seal annoyed me somehow: there were several times where the “correct” solution to a mechanic was a bit too forced, like with drowning where you are either immune to it or you die immediately. There just didn’t seem to be much room to experiment.
I had a hard time with this one too; felt the non-gameplay aspects were lacking (and FFT's legacy is partially built on the great theme/art/sound)

As an avid lover and consumer of the genre I'd like to provide my 2 cents over a few titles on this list:
- Sword Legacy: Omen was a big disappointment, character development is very restrictive, uninteresting and unbalanced. Casual encounters are ALL basically a copy-paste of the same extremely boring battle.
- Banner of the maid was an interesting experience albeit more akin to Fire Emblem than FFT
- Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark is by far the most deserving FFT spiritual successor and the one the the most similar and in-depth job system on the maket.

I like Fae Tactics but I got bored of it very quickly.
The only game I finished on the list was Fell Seal and it's the only that really feels like the FFT franchise.

Banner of the Maid's maps were so tight and well-designed, especially on the hardest difficulty. It really deserves more recognition.
I played a lot of this king of games, even on n3ds and emulators. This is simply best indie tactics PC game. Other games have serious flaws, like super easy difficulty, broken mechanics , little variety, weak story, terrible visuals, mediocrity etc. Horizons Gate is very good game, but its not like FFT, its more like Uncharted Waters.

Hey there Best Indie Games, how's it going? I got a couple questions I wanna ask you.
So my first question is this. I get what you were going for with this list, but I think that you, like almost everyone else who compares games to Final Fantasy Tactics have made a very big mistake, making me ask you when the last time was when you've played the OG FFTatics?
The OG FFTactics did indeed have a lot of cool classes that you can pick, and the combat is a lot of fun, but that's not really what makes it so unique. What makes it such a compelling game is both the script, and the compelling characters like the MC Ramza and your childhood best friend Delita, as well as the consistently great plot twists that happen all throughout the game.
My second question is this. What games on this list have any of those 3?

It has been awhile lol. I suppose I'm more mechanics focused so things like terrain, elevation and a job class system are more important to me. Granted, the story and writing are a major point for FFT but there really have not been that many outstanding games with a good plot in the tactics sphere

Well, its weird way to justify game genre by story plot, not mechanics, but anyway - at least half of the games in this lists try to their own "epic" story. And while its very arguably, how close their get to Final Fantasy, at least they meet that criteria - they have game mechanics and complex story like FFT, so yes, techically they are "games like Final Fantasy Tactics". And this doesnt means they better or worse - they are quite similar in most ways.
@@PuffZombie Not just the story itself, but it's more the extremely compelling dialogue and the extremely compelling characters. To this day there are few main characters I find more compelling than Ramza than in just about any game or anime. It in many ways feels like it's written from someone who knows how to write an extremely compelling, intelligent, well written fantasy novel where you absolutely fall in love with the main character. God Delita is so fascinating!
And yeah, FFT does have really good combat mechanics, but unfortunately that seems to be what most people seem to remember liking from it. It's kinda like the people that remember loving FF7OG for the at the time incredible looking cutscenes, and the Cloud vs Sephiroth fights, and have forgotten how gutsy the game is for having such a massive anti-capitalist message, and the really fucking good plot twists that happen in the game. God it was shocking to find out that Cloud killed (spoiler) long before the game started, and blocked it out. God it was shocking how (spoiler) doed but what really nailed the reason why it had to happen, and it was pulled off beautifully!
Since you seem more familiar with the games on the list, can you point out any of them that have an extremely compelling cast that have a lot of great dialogue, and pull off some really great plot twists?
I'm kind of hesitant to play Fell Seal because I don't own the DLC for it. I know that seems weird, but I feel like I'd be missing quite a bit.

It's weird that FFT has never ever been able to click with me. Of this entire list, The Last Spell is the only one that has stuck with me. I also have a special hatred for how terrible the writing in some of the games, although I'm not going to name names. If you're going to try to be like FFT, you can't skimp on the writing.
If you could say Urtuk: the Desolation is a FFT like game (hex based strategy, bit more of a Darkest Dungeon/Battle Brothers mash up), I'd put that over any of the games on this list.

Do i must to remind you, what everyone have they own tastes ? its OK what you didnt like SRPG like FFT and FFT itself...but why are you come to commment section of vidio especially dedicated for games of this subgenre to let us know about it ? And no - Urtuk is NOT like FFT - game (otherwise you can call any turn-based game 'final fantasy tactics - like"), and its only your personal opinion (which doesnt cost much, you know), what this game is better than anything in this list. While i cant say it bad, nonetheless.

I look at a video like this, where BIG continues to put out good, easy to watch content, and I'm like "Wow, this ended up being a list of games that should be up my alley but aren't." Except for The Last Spell.

I always wonder why Square doesn't make more FF Tactics game? Seriously everyone would love to play a new game of old IP's from PS1 era. Vagrant Story? Chrono Cross? Trigger? C'mon the last Tactics game was a mobile game! It had cool features like playing with Cloud and other FF characters but it's a cheap mobile game and the franchise deserves more.
I believe it didn't sell that well, and given all this time, the expectations must be massive for a sequel so perhaps they are not confident?
@@ClemmyGames They could at least Remake the game with good graphics and bring some new features like playing other FF characters (that are not from the original game). SE old IP's have a legion of fans specially the Chrono series... I'm pretty sure people would support them if they bring these games to new generations. By the way I love your videos man, the amount of detail that you choose the games that are actually good made me like your channel even more. Keep it up with your good work!

Hellenica, with its elements of moving both allies and enemies around with certain moves, reminds me a lot of Disgaea, the (in my opinion) unquestioned king of the genre

The broken jobs, The sometimes Annoyingly smart A.I, and best of all NO MICRO TRANSACTIONS
I kinda wish their was another one involving another story.
Ex: Lady Aegis
After the events of the princess Dying ( which was sad to even see ) I can see her slowly trying to get Revenge on Delita
While of course tackling other problems in her path
And yes Im assuming she still alive along with all those In Ramza party considering he himself lived.

While I love SRPGs, I do often wish that new tactics entries wouldn't be so insistent about paying homage to Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre specifically. There is a lot you can do in the space and (in my opinion) FFT gameplay is a bit dated and rigid compared to more modern SRPG games.
Plenty more that pay tribute to other games ;) Stay tuned
I'd say something that did a nice job of utilizing the idea of turn-based tactics, but with a twist, was the Valkyria Chronicles games.
I don't believe they do. All to often they utilize the names of better games in order to market their own products. Otherwise, we would have many more amazing Srpgs. Most of what occupies the space now isn't worth playing.
I really liked Xcom2 and that newer arcade one.

Wargroove is Fire Emblem - like, or even closer to Advanced Tactics. Its not FFT - like anyway.
Final Fantasy Tactics is not an indie game. Thats made by a massive triple A game company. An indie game is made by companies with a tiny amount of workers like No Man's Sky which was started by just six people which then went up to only fourteen people...
none of these compare to Final Fantasy Tactics though
