I’m trying really hard to decide between the 230r and the 300r. I’m 5’11” 200lbs and I’m concerned about the heavy weight of a 300r, so I’ve been leaning toward a 230r, but don’t want to feel like settled for a lesser bike later on. Do you find the 300r to be too heavy/cumbersome for singe track riding?
The 300R is a no-brainer compared to a 230R. The suspension is much better and you barely notice the weight difference while riding it. I finally got out with the KLX300R for a few hours of single track trails. It did great!! The engine brakes are a nice aid on the downhill. But if you do mainly singletrack and are looking for something serious that eats black-diamond trails for breakfast, definitely look into getting a KTM 200-300 2-stroke or something along those lines.
I agree, I bought the crf230 in 2016, by the end of that summer I wanted more, so I picked up a kx125, then a kx250f, now I have the klx300r and I love it!!! My wife rides the 230 now 😄
It’s better for sure, but like I mentioned in this video, comparing the KLX300R to the YZ250X is like comparing a mule to a race horse. There are things the KLX300R is better suited for, like this camping trip!
I have an XR150l that I have modified into a 230cc, it is better than stock now,
but I am really eyeing this bike.
How often do you come across Bears? Do you have to carry repellent when you ride?
I go riding 2-4 times a month, and I have 2-3 Bear encounters every riding season. I never bring Bear Spray.

You will outgrow the 230 quickly and regret not getting the 300.
