    Don't worry about those old timers laughing kiddo. Your doing great. It's comforting to see some young throwbacks who still care about the old stuff. One day all us old folks will be gone and you'll carry on. You can't know where your going if you don't know where you've been. Pass on your knowledge to your kids.

      It's so reliable and fixable because it's so simple. But also because Henry Ford and his engineers were geniuses and prioritized simplicity and reliability before comfort and extra features.

    • @spamtrap8021
      @spamtrap8021 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Trade-offs. In reality, those vehicles were easily fixable, but required constant maintenance and frequent repairs.
      Vehicles now, commonly reach 100,000 miles *easily* and often 300,000 miles without the need for major repairs, but are very complex, and difficult to work on and repair.

    • @VioletGiraffe
      @VioletGiraffe ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@spamtrap8021, you're very right, I should have mentioned that, too. Modern machines are complicated, but it doesn't mean they're unreliable. They're just harder to fix when they do break eventually.

To think of that time when it was new, back in the 30’s, and to picture that truck hauling hay bales on a farm… really puts the term “another life” into perspective. Very nice truck. AA trucks are geared down compared to the cars, and so have a lower top speed. Spark advance needs to be adjusted (advanced) after starting, or it will be REALLY slow. Oil change requires only 4 qts, as some remains in the splash tray. Also, the updraft carb prevents fuel drips into the cylinders.

    Cars and trucks this sort of age with all original parts and original motor seem to be quite a common find in the US. Here in the UK we just don't see this sort of thing. We do get the occasional barn find but it's nothing like what you guys have over there with old trucks and cars just sitting on farms just about everywhere! One of the many things I envy about the US. I'd love to be able to rescue some old vehicles as often as you get to do it!

    Nice AA Truck you have there! If you turn your coil upside down like the original coils were mounted, it makes the wiring a lot neater. As for the oil, if the engine is old, best to use non-detergent oil. If the engine is fresh, a good 10-30 detergent is all you need. You DON'T need any extra zinc or ZDDP in a Model A engine. Wasn't around in 1931.

    Red line oil company makes a zinc additive and I called them up to ask a few things about it. They told me that prewar cars don't get an advantage from zinc, it was formulated for oils for muscle cars, primarily for the plain cam shafts at high speed. They talked me out of buying the additive for my prewar car as they said it was a waste of money.
