Can We Get The Engine To Break Free?? - 1928 Ford Model AA Truck

  • Last week we pulled the 1928 Ford Model AA truck from his home for the last 40+ years and its time to start going over the truck. When Matt first looked at the truck he had attempted to crank the engine by hand and it didn't budge. Now that the truck is back at the garage, we can take a closer look at the engine and see what kind of mess Matt has gotten into. We really hope we can get the motor going and this extremely early production # Model A back on the road.

Matt, I'm 72 and my dad taught me from a young age.. ALWAYS, ALWAYS take out the spark plugs and add 1/2 cup Marvel Mystery Oil to each cylinder of a stuck engine. Leave it for 24 hours then begin to turn slowly so not to break a ring. He was a die hard Flathead man when he came home from WW2

I'm 72 too, my dad was exactly like yours. Was employed at Willies Motors. My dad used Liquid Wrench to loosen pistons. I just disassembled the engine.

I'm 42 and was going to say the same thing never crank over a dry engine if it stuck I have broke many engines free with ATF or Marvel mystery oil not to many flatheads but lot's of overhead valve engines

Can't understand the thought process to completely fill up the cylinders with oil. I would have just put in enough to cover the top of the pistons to soak it down into the rings. 2 ounces at most.

That was painful to watch. Mystery oil is supposed to sit 24 hours and it takes all the work out of freeing up a stuck engine without breaking any parts. Wow...

Morning Matt, man, I sure would like to have that truck!!!!! I would get it mechanically sound & drive it! One thing I found with vehicles that have been sitting for years is the crap in the oil will settle to the bottom of the oil pan, people pull the dipstick & are amazed how clean the oil is, not really, I bought a 48 KB8 International truck out of a scrap yard, I was told the truck ran, maybe it did but not for years, I pulled the pan & there was 1/2" of crap in the pan, long story short with a tune up, carb rebuild, truck ran great, please....do not let anyone rat or street rod this.truck!!!!! Build on Dudes!!

Looks like she will come back to life again with a bit more massaging. What to do with her? Since you are such a talented fabricator, make a pickup bed like the one you described as being very rare. Since you have the fenders, it would be seem to be a perfect thing to do.

Matt, For future reference. Put the hand crank in the socket at 7 or 8 o’clock. Put a floor jack under the crank and put pressure on the crank. Let it sit for a few days after cylinder oiling. Mike is right. Pull the head and hone out the rust ridge. What wowee truck. Build the express pickup box and keep it for the shop gopher. Stock model As are not fast, but they are a blast to drive. The new Irontrap logo over the patina on the door would look great! Goof off might take off the red paint. It works on hardware store paint, not on modern uerathanes.

  • @georgeredlewgit6891

The bed you're referring to is the type 89A, a bigger version of the '28 to '30 A pickup bed - 84 inches long by approximately 48 inches wide on the 131" wheelbase.
    Same as the Walton truck.

    Hey Matt, Mike
We all know you are going to sell it !
It's just a matter of how soon.
It is currently a new toy to play with, but you do have other toys that need your attention.
It would be fun to play with just to be able to drive an original stock 28/29 model A.
It is an experience few of us will ever have.
Pulling the head sounds like the first thing to do.
    Clean up what you can.
    Put the head back on.
Make a new fuel line which we can see is missing.
Put an inline filter in the new fuel line as we know it is going to have crap in the tank.
The Metalic snap you heard may have been a ring breaking, a stuck valve poping closed or the starter bendex snaping back as it may have been stuck to the flywheel from a previous atempt to start it.
Good luck with it and thank you for letting us almost be there for the fun.
    Live Long,
    Be Safe and Well

Spent lotsa time unsticking engines so I will throw out some stuff that's worked for me. Use Marvel or ATF like you did then put a jack under the crank handle and partially raise the front of the vehicle. (some might even raise the wheels off the ground) Walk away and just take a gander every day to see if the wheels are lower. (might take a week, but only 4 days in your case) What you have now is carbon build up on top of the pistons which doesn't allow you to go beyond TDC. An old trick is to put the pistons mid way and flush the cyls with some kerosene. At that point fit a few inches of brake line to an air nozzle (enough to reach the piston) and blast the carbon with shop air in a circular motion while holding a towel lightly over the plug hole. All of the junk will fly out the plug hole. You might have to repeat the process or let it soak over night but you will get enough crap out to finally turn it over.

    • @robertbusack2100
      @robertbusack2100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I am 58 and have done this a time or two with no problems works great. also run air down the cyl. with a made up spark plug that has closed valves this will push the marvel thru even faster

Matt I use ATF or Marvel and laquer thinner mixed. This thins the ATF/Marvel and allows it to penetrate better in my experience. The better penetration softens the crud and will do less damage to rhe rings. It needs at least 24 hours to soak and sometimes more than once. Just some more information that may help. I appreciate all that you guys do to resurrect what you find.

Matt - that marvel mystery oil really needs to soak for a few days -this also helps with badly needed lubrication when it does crank over . Started my ‘30 Model A after sitting 34 years in about 30 minutes. Of course I had poured a generous amount of oil in each cylinder and turned it over SLOWLY with the plugs out when stored. And when preparing to start it I had added the Marvel Mystery oil about 4 days ahead.
Gas tank was shiny clean so poured in a couple cups of fuel and it started right up and even idled smoothly. The carb float stuck soon after, so I swapped in another carb until I could clean up the other one.

This is what we did years ago on an old morris 8. We were doing a valve job on it. You take the head off clean up the surfaces and lay the head gasket down on something flat and clean it off. Then spray paint the gasket with silver galvanising paint both sides. 2 coats. Then refit it as normal. The galv paint fills any small imperfections and seals it up. It works. Give it a try. Its not as though is 22:1 compression like a diesel. What have you got to loose. I can of paint,1 hour, a can of brakleen and half a sheet of sand paper and you get to run the dingle ball hone through the cylinders and wire brush the valves so its all nice and clean.

with sidevalve engines that have been sitting a long time, theyre more prone to lock up.Always remove to cylinder head for a look.More damage can be done by forcing it to turn over when things are rusty inside. Its a quick job lifting the cylinder head.Love your show, ceers Graeme in New Zealand.

You may want to invest in a boroscope for as many vehicles as you get. Love your channel!

Hello Matt, Do a tow truck Idea using an old (from the thirty's) Holmes wrecker hoist! That would be cool. You could use it to pick up other old car projects for the shop and channel. Greg

Love this show!!! My 2 cents...skip the expensive, fancy oil. Go straight to ATF!!! Let it soak and just work it over a few days. This old truck will clean up nice!!! The oil will act like a solvent. Good Job!!!

I looked up the Model AA Express, they are very cool. You could fabricate the bed and have a real nice truck.
