You can see in the "Gerudo Assault" cutscenes that Sonia and Rauru are standing on the Great Sky Island when it was still attached to the land, the temple is in the cutscene along with the shines being in the same spot, we also see in the cutscenes that the Hylians use zonite weapons, we also are told that the Sky islands were made by the using magic to lift landmass' into the air so yes they were attached to the lands of Hyrule before being lifted up, however it is suggested that some land masses are older than others and were used by the Zonai like those skydiving challenges.
The only thing that was visibly from the Great Plateau is the Temple of Time. The rest of the Great Plateau itself is completely identical to how it looks in the present. No chunks of land were removed from it. You can get a really good look at it in a few memory cutscenes and the land is untouched. So the only thing that noticeably came from the Great Plateau was the Zonai version of the Temple of Time.

My theory is that most of the zonite was used in the great war against monsters shown in the cutscene where ganon became a demon lord, because we see that the Hylians soley used Zonai weapons it would make sense that they mined it all up in attempts to fight back the demon army.
@@GossipGeist there were hundreds if not thousands of monsters in the demon army, even boss monsters too. Back then the blood moon didn't exist so resources mined didn't respawn and i believe after ganon was sealed only then did the blood moon respawn resources but by that time they probably killed most of the demon army and used up all the zonite, thus it was all used up by the people who made zonaite weapons to fight back the army.
@@RichardHaidenHodges that only summoned the demon army, it did not affect resourses yet because Ganon had control over his powers fully and was only using it to create an army, Ganon is smart enough to not regenerate the resources on the enemy side each time he wants to respawn more of his monsters, so it would makes sense that the blood moon only became an active event that regenerated resources after he was sealed away and could no longer fully control the blood moon.
One interesting thing about the depths is that after the mural room, as you make your way towards the imprisoning chamber, you pass by pillars in that tunnel hallway. But some of these pillars are actually part of what looks like broken doors that had once been sealed and locked to prevent anyone from going to mummydorf. There's three sets of them and they're different architecture from the pillars in the rest of that hallway. You can even see the handles where a slab of stone might've gone! Like it had been broken in the upheaval but if you boot up the prologue it's long been broken. It was probably broken by the calamity but the idea that the sages might've built it to prevent anyone from interfering sounds so interesting. Just thought I'd mention this because it'd be a cool idea for a short and nobody I've seen has even mentioned this.

There's a few things down there that I noted as being pretty odd, and I've been kind of compiling a huge list of stuff that's Zonai related to review for a potential future video on all of those findings.
I think there's actually five barriers. There's a noticeable increase in deterioration the farther you go down the tunnel, which to me suggests that there's been a progression to it. My personal head-canon is that each barrier was destroyed along with the different manifestations of Calamity Ganon. We know without a doubt that it's manifested at least three times, as an earlier form had to drive the Shiekah to create the Divine Beasts and assist in setting the expectation for its behavior. Then there's the manifestation that came around 10,000 years ago that the army of Shiekah Technology was used against, and the most recent one that possessed said technology. Perhaps the final barrier being broken is the reason why the last manifestation was able to act so intelligently; it would have had better access to the remains of Ganondorf and his Secret Stone, which Ganondorf himself states is able to impart knowledge. If the time gap between the last two calamities is anything to go by, then using this hypothesis we can estimate that the Distant Past occurred some 50,000-60,000 years ago.
So the Great Sky island came from the Great Plateau. Under the Great Plateau there's the Champion's Ballad dungeon, and further below that is the Central Mining Facility. Thats a lot of stuff all in one spot
My understanding was all veins on the surface EXCEPT this one were fully EXHAUSTED by the time the sky islands were raised. So there WAS zonaite in surface caves in the ancient past, but you just can’t get it any MORE. And any traces of such surface mines would’ve been buried or scavenged long ago.
The Rito story book, in the house near Rito Village, tells that a Zonai visited the village (he had auto build ability) and after some problems, flied with the rito and the rito saw the islands in the sky, after the sky barrier.
If you go above the temple of time theres a side quest set by a steward construct to be completed within 12 hours (i wont go into detail) and once completed it confirms that the reason the great sky islands were lifted from the ground was so ganon wouldn’t interfere with links awakening so link would have time to prepare. Im not sure how early you can access this side mission but i didn’t pretty late in the game so you might have to wait a little before unlocking
That's after you get the Zora armor. It's only the Great Sky Island that was created to make a safe place for Link to eventually awaken there. The other sky archipelagos already existed. The Zonai had a whole civilization up there.
The zonaite near the surface could have been mined before because it was more accessible but all that is left is in the depths and possibly GSI because the constructs have a way to preserve it but they are all that is left
My theory is the Zonai specifically harvested all the naturally occurring veins of zonite from the surface to have a safer means of producing it than traveling to the depths, but still had their more dangerous mines for larger zonite production
My headcannon is that there use to be zonite on the surface a long time ago but as the zonie used more and more of it they had to go deeper and deeper to reach any. That's when the discovered the depths and started mining the zionite there. I also like to think that they were only just getting started when the zonie decided to abandon it all and left(or all died out) and that explains to me when I get the feeling that everything down in the depths feels like it was stoped halfway through whatever they were doing. Is the anything to support this headcannon? No but I still like to think this is what happened
It would make sense that it rose out of the depths, as the massive holes that were formed in the ground going into the depths. Most have rocks on the outside as if something broke out, rather than a sinkhole type situation, where there would be mostly rubble under below the holes that lead into the depths.
The idea I got from playing the game was that this was the last REMAINING natural zonaite deposit in the sky or surface, probably exhausted due to well... All that zonai tech
Alternatively, if Zonaite exists wherever land is present near where hyrule fades into another realm, perhaps the risen land produces zonaite just *because* its so high up? The underworld and the heavens alike embuing stone with the same mysterious power. The Zonai mostly kept to mining the Depths though, because it turns out there's more rocks down there than in the sky. Despite their extensive efforts to the contrary.
The zonite that was on the surface if it was there at all was likely own mined up and I'm pretty sure you can find the zonite on other sky islands it could have been there from the beginning

I named each section of the skyland a few days ago (except for ehere yiu get the purah pad, I need to update the name for those ones). Tgat section thrre is simply called the "Island Mines". This is definitely an interesting theory and not one I've ever heard of or thought of myself but it makes a lot of sense. I even have more evidence to it! Look at the area. What is there? A plot of land? Look at it from the map. There is an island directly above it! The Island of Awakening. I looked at that place and many ruins in the depths for so long. It is made to decend. The largest chamber within it, the one with the large pool of water and the archaic leggings, it is seen in another place. The depth. The forgotten foundation. It was a stairwell! Now, look at the place you get the archaic leggings. It is also from the depths. It is where they store crushed Zonait. The entire stairwell has crushed zonait all over it too! The place connected to the depths and went up to the surface to a refinery and then off the charges went from the wings right there. With it being directly above the mines, it could have been connected at one point! And then there's the supply chain... ; )
Did everyone forget Hylia exists? She definitely still played a part in this, albeit inspirational wise. The Zonai may have been able to contact Hylia via the statues and asked for guidance. Then, using their technology and magic prowess, was able to create the Sky Islands (only because Zelda needed a way to protect Link while he recovered. Again).
Maybe some of them come up at different times others for different reasons or being constructed bye the different sentient creatures of the realm for different purposes and also bit of science of the lands kind of not being the original one that should have been there in the first place. Kind of the whole rock cycle deal that happens in the land of high rule since we do have a scientist in there. So it's not completely magic, not completely the whims of the lab. There are likely coinciding factors to this, being That You have some sort of Coalessing factor to this as well. Being that some magic and some science embedded itself in the land of hyrule at the same time

It's possible such materials didnt exist near the surface during BOTW, but Zelda may have found a way to task the Sages and constructs with preserving the resource that would later be sent to sky island.
The depths we're originally the Surface, but over many millennia including the creation and evaporation of an ancient sea the new surface was gradually built up.
Might wanna rewatch the Short. I mentioned how there's zero zonaite in caves on the surface. If that island came from the surface, then why is there zonaite in that islands caves and nowhere else? That's the question.

I think it’s more likely a rare surface level vein of zonite that allowed for the discovery of zonite in the first place.
