I used to work in a swimming club (before the pandemic) where we took an hour every Sunday to teach kids with disabilities ( none had physical disabilities) how to swim. There is so much work behind every single one of these athletes. They deserve to be celebrated. I always felt proud when my swimmers won medals in competitions, because they had work so hard.

This makes me happy to be a human being. Makes me happy knowing there are people doing everything they can to live their dreams, even at a disadvantage. Makes me happy to know there are great people, disabled or otherwise, that are helping to bring those dreams to life. Makes me happy to know there are more good people than bad in the world. All of us coming together to celebrate human tenacity & grit, sharing a universal feeling of overwhelming, tear-jerking joy. Televise this like you do everything else, people WILL watch this, they will want to. Jam it down our throats like a reality tv show, because at least this would be good for us to see as a species, garner some perspective.
Only the best of wishes to you friend.

It’s impossible to have enough categories to make sport “fair” for all athletes. Because disabilities are so individual and where are you going to get enough opponents with exactly the same diagnosis. But the good thing is that we don’t really care too much. We are just enjoying our sport and challenging ourselves. There aren’t many financial gains in winning for disabled athletes, and when you have had a life threatening major illness or injury, you often have a different mind set.
