Crazy Castle really is something else.
First it was Roger Rabbit, who became Bugs Bunny, who became Mickey Mouse, until Kemco was finally 'enough with this licensing BS' and made Kid Klown their own creation.
It also took me way too long to realize "Night Mayor" = nightmare.

Here's hoping Great Greed comes to NSO, it's an amazing hidden gem, and is pretty snappy to play nowadays. Fun fact about the Japanese version, there's one point in the game where you find an empty cabin and can rest there. Problem is, you're with a princess and there's only 1 bed. You then have a battle with your perverted desires (I'm not joking) and if you win, you get healed. If not, you don't get healed and the princess comments on how tired you look. It was censored in the US release by a regular inn for obvious reasons (especially since the sprite used was the backside of a naked long-haired woman)

In Batman Returns, the clown enemies are actually representative of Penguin's thugs from the movie; the Joker had typical mobster goons in the first Tim Burton Batman film. The inspiration was that Penguin was very much like a side show freak, and thus his gang were other bizarre, twisted carnies, such as the poodle lady, the fire-breathing devil, etc. As a kid, I thought it weird that Penguin had clowns as henchmen, and not the Joker, but I actually think now it's quite fitting (at least for that version of the infamous gangster).

Jared, about those clown enemies: They are characters from Batman Returns, not the first movie. The Penguin had taken over some sort of evil circus, which is why Batman has to fight clowns, weird skull motorcycle dudes, a girl with a trained dog, a fire eater, and a strong man just to name a few. In the first movie, the Joker is the only clown there. Strangely, with the exception of a very brief mime scene, there are no other clowns in the original Batman besides Joker. All of Joker's goons were just thugs. Weird, I know...Penguin should have had the thugs and Joker should have had the evil circus, but that's just how it worked out.

If you liked that try Sword of Hope 1 & 2. You have to draw your own map oldschool style, but those are probably my favorite Game Boy games, I had a blast beating them, still have my hand drawn grid maps. Yoshi's Cookie started as an arcade game named Hermetica (later renamed Archimedes) developed by the company Home Data. This incarnation of the game featured alchemy-themed graphics. The game received a very poor reception when it was location-tested at arcades in Kansai and Tarumi, causing Home Data to abandon further development and sell the Hermetica rights to the game to Bullet-Proof Software. Bullet-Proof Software then produced an SNES version, designed by David Nolte. This version was shown at the 1992 Consumer Electronics Show. Nintendo obtained the licenses for the 8-bit (NES and Game Boy) versions of Hermetica, and developed the game into Yoshi's Cookie. Outside of answering design questions from designer Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Hermetica had no involvement in the game's reworking as Yoshi's Cookie, which now featured Mario characters. While Bullet-Proof Software retained the rights to the original Super NES game, Nintendo licensed the Mario characters and allowed the developer to use the Yoshi's Cookie branding.

The best way to describe the "leveling system" in Sorcerer's Kingdom is that it's similar to the SaGa games or Final Fantasy 2 (NOT THE SNES VERSION!!!!!) So if you want to have the magician use physical attacks, have him attack constantly, and he will level that stat up. It's a good RPG for Genesis if you get sick of the other ones that are getting rereleases all the time.

    • @marcavis
      @marcavis ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sorcerer's Kingdom has a very neat mechanic in that if you grind for money early on, you can buy more expensive weapons, but your strength determines how many attacks you have. Thus your weapons somewhat "grow with you"; don't replace your 70 attack sword that lets you attack 10 times for that 150 attack mace, until you get strong enough to attack 5 times with it. Deeper than Squaresoft RPGs in that department hehe
It is a decent game, not a bad time for a Genesis RPG aficionado.

LOVE Batman Returns. It was one of the first games I got to rebuild a physical SNES collection of games you just can’t get on Switch. This show helps keep me aware of what I’m looking at for prices!

Actually Jared the enemies in the Batman Return game being clowns was in the movie. All of Penguins henchmen were ex-circus performers. You find out he used to be a part of em as a sideshow attraction briefly in the film.
Oddly enough the Joker in the first film had zero clown henchmen.

I played a lot of Sorcerer's Kingdom growing up. What can I say, I like RPGs, and at the time I took what I could get.
Let's see. It has a really weird feature where, when it's your turn, you can command ONE of your four party members to do something. And then the enemies go. So you can and should basically ignore everyone else in the party except for the main character. Really not sure why that feature exists, but it makes the decision of managing your party pretty simple.
The soundtrack to the game is pretty cool though. Listen to it sometime!

Having grown up with a Genesis instead of an SNES (although I did have friends with the Super Nintendo, so I was able to play that console's RPGs sometimes through them), I can agree with the "took what I could get" part. Sorcerer's Kingdom, Phantasy Star 2, and Shining Force were definitely favored rentals as a result.

"hopefully someone in the comments played this more"
    oh oh! that's me!
the first area is BRUTAL, you have to grind away at the orcs one at a time, stopping to heal at your house each time. but after that the game eases up...or you are finally balanced enough to take on the other foes
and not longer after you get a second party member, a mage type who does long range AOE damage
surprised you didn't mention the ROCKING battle music! whenever i talk to friends about genesis music i always send the battle theme from Sorcerer's kingdom over
if anyone reads this comment do give the OST a look at least!
in fact the battle theme was all that stuck with me for a looooong time after renting this as a kid. i always wanted to try it again because i loved how the battles played out. Where instead of transporting to a disconnected static screen, the area you are in already serves as the grid. i havn't played the game in a minute but i do believe you can initiate combat if an enemy is on screen.
also: the random damage that was being experienced was the multi-hit system, yeah sometimes your green haired li'l dude would just go ham on enemies. i'm certain one of the stats dictated multi-hits
dang i love this li'l gem.

Batman Returns for the SNES was one of those games where Wikipedia lists the month it came out in North America but not the exact date so I wasn't sure it would be mentioned and, as such, I'm relieved that you guys didn't overlook it.
I rented Batman Returns within a week or two of the release and, yeah, it's pretty much my favourite SNES game* since I also really liked the Dark Christmas vibe of the movie and the game captured it perfectly, and, unlike the Genesis Batman movie-based games, the SNES Batman Returns game went the extra mile and licensed the Danny Elfman Batman theme. (The Sunsoft game for the Genesis based on the first Tim Burton Batman movie was otherwise near-perfect, and the original music composed for the game was great, but I'd be lying if I said that the absence of the Elfman Batman theme for whatever obscure music-licensing reason that probably can be summed up as "Warner wanted to charge Sunsoft an extra licensing fee just for the music" wasn't a glaring omission.)
Batman Returns on SNES looked like a top-tier Konami arcade beat 'em up with graphics that were a notch above even Turtles in Time and it played beautifully and I'm having trouble thinking of any other movie-based game on any console that I like nearly as much. (Maybe Dune: the Battle for Arrakis on Genesis, but that was based more on the world from the Frank Herbert books than anything specific to the 1984 David Lynch Dune film.)
*That's with the caveat that I had a SNES but never got that many games for it since I generally preferred how games played and "felt" on Genesis. I didn't even have Super Mario World since I got the cheapest, most base SNES package without any pack-in games.

Minor Disney Villains? The Night Mayor in Kid Klown in Night Mayor World is a reskinned Horned King from "The Black Cauldron"; one of the most underrated, underappreciated films Disney made in their canon! He was rather relevant and used as a villain quite a few times in Japan through many of their Mickey and Donald games in the 1990s, basically being their "big baddie" before they became way too over-obsessed with Maleficent. (also Eilonwy is a Disney Princess who is brutally ignored by the studio)

find interesting kidd clown crazy castle switched from roger rabbit to similar cartoon wabbit bugs bunny to mickey mouse then mickey again(minnie in a coma....that's something i didn't expect to hear.) when bugs went stateside.

The worst part is how often that crap gets done to Yoshi and, to a lesser extent, Kirby. Nintendo's favorite thing is to take an experimental game concept and slap one of those two on 'em.

The clown enemies from Batman Returns are actually from its namesake source. If you recall, Penguin's henchmen are from the Red Triangle gang and they're all former circus performers ^^ Coming to think of it, there are a lot of clowns on the Tim Burton Batman movies O_o

I was clever enough to "read" my brother's gaming magazine which at that age mostly meant looking at pictures and taking note of games with a high review score. If I liked the pictures and it had a good number, I pestered my brother to read it for me. That's how I got Kirby's adventure and Mario All Stars. Then I learnedvto read lol. Video games were a great motivator for me

By the time Yoshi's Cookie was out the NES was pretty old. Luckily a video rental store near my grandma's house was liquidating their NES collection and I could get like 3-4 games for the price of one new. Kind of loved that, cause if I got a stinker I usually also got a good game out of it too.
