Jared went into this episode, thinking "I punished myself enough with the Bubsy games in the past. I'm not going to punish myself with those horrendous puns ever, if not ever again! I've got standards, darn it!" Great episode as always.
Bubsy reminds me of those fake videogame characters used in tv and movies. I definitely could see Stephanie Tanner wanting the latest Bubsy for Christmas and Danny shooting up a mall to get it.
One curious thing about the SNES version of first "Mechwarrior": among all PAL releases, it was one of the very few Super Nintendo games who got a fully working translation in ITALIAN! So, I mean not just the box art and instructions manual, but the whole fu**in' game! Imagine us, as young italian kids in the 90s as we were, being surprised when the game runned for the first time on screen: we were able to fully understand what the characters were saying!!!! 😳 That was a kinda unique and precious feeling for its time! The joke about Little Samson is totally hilarious! 🤣 That's genius. Cheers at you, Now in the 90s' stuff.
It's also a sequel to the _Fortified Zone_ games on GB, making it the third in the series (the second one didn't have an official overseas release, but a fan patch exists.)
I was SUCH a big fan of the (first) Bubsy game. I loved cartoons and games. Wanted to be an animator since I was like 8! When Bubsy came out it had voices, funny animation and SO many different ways to die! It was hard and confusing at times but I played the crap out of it. I still replay it sometimes. I loved games that put so much character in their games. Pac Man 2: The New Adventures was one of my favorites as well because of this! Anyway, love the show, haven't missed a single episode! This is my new "Saturday Morning Cartoon" basically haha, keep up the good work!
Jared, want to commend you and Dylan both on this series. Your professionalism is as stoic and positive as always and you handle the main section of the show wonderfully; Dylan’s gruff sarcasm adds a marvelous level of mirth. You two are striking a magnificent balance, and this is a wonderful series at this point!
Bubsy 1 is a good game. Everyone always complains about the 1 hit deaths, but no one ever mentions that you start with 9 lives and the enemies STAY dead when you kill them. There's also a power up that makes you invincible for a short time like the star in Mario. I'm also seeing people complain about fall damage like the glide button doesn't even exist. There's a lot of bonus lives throughout the levels, and the occasional continue item. Every third level has a password so you can start there with a fresh 9 lives (and every level has a password if you look them up on GameFAQs). To this day, I have never beaten Sonic 1, 2, or 3, but I have beaten Bubsy a few times. I should mention that I never saw any of the manufactured hype for the game. With the exception of the free issue of Nintendo Power that came with my copy of Star Fox, I didn't read any gaming magazines until 2000.
Ok, editor Dylan is pretty much the highlight of this show for me, those collector's corner segments never fail to make me laugh at least once. Also, believe it or not, Bubsy: Paws on Fire is actually a banger. It's an endless runner type game where you run, jump, glide and slide as Bubsy and few other characters. It even has that armadillo from the animated show as a playable character for those of you who somehow are interested in the lore. But the only reason it's good is because its a reskin of Bit Trip Runner 3 (AKA Runner3), made by the same people who made that game. Same controls and concept just with bubsy characters slapped on top of it. What I'm saying is that you should play Runner 3, it's fucking great.
Sooooo I'm one of the weirdos that actually kinda enjoys the first Bubsy game. Will I call it a good game? No. Will I say it's not as bad as some people say? Yes... to a certain extent. I'd rather play Bubsy 1 over some of the other mascot games of the era, but it's still miles behind Mario or Sonic. Dylan's segments continue to entertain greatly. Keep up the good work, man! And finally, the Timberwolf is the design I forever think of when the names Battletech or Mechwarrior are mentioned. There's something just iconic about that design.
I remember my older brother's friend saying Bubsy was a cool/fun game, so I was, therefore, excited to try it out. And, when I finally did, it was pretty okay! Supposedly, the original tagline was going to be "whatever blows your hair back", which he says prior to the second level. Also, Clan Wolf for life.
Pretty Okay describes it. People act like it's the worst game ever but I would have chosen to play Bubsy over Batman Returns on the Genesis. It's incredibly hard and cheap but with practice can be mastered. Now Bubsy 3D ? That could quite possibly be one of the worst Playstation games ever.
Man, you may get this a lot... but this is by far, the best retro show idea I've seen since AVGN. Not only you are a great host and the research is spot on, but the production is flawless. Thank you!
I remember enjoying the aesthetic of Bubsy as a kid in spite of its poor design. I was at that age where I just accepted any BS that would happen to me in the game like the really short fall damage threshold.
A lot of the flaws anyone would complain about now were very common in a lot of games then. I enjoyed Bubsy along with a lot of the wannabe mascot games like james pond and aero the acrobat, they weren't as good as the main 2 mascots but they were onto something.
@@GrimRize No offense, but you had lower standards then me. I remember renting Bubsy and thinking it sucked. Aero the Acrobat wasn't very good either and James Pond was so bad I didn't even bother trying it. Playing several James Pond games on emulator many years later proved my judgement right. I don't recall any other 2D character platformer with fall damage. Can you name one?
My partner was listening to this in the background and, as soon as he heard you talk about Mechwarrior, he immediately started gushing about how much customization options you had and how he loved trying out all kinds of builds. Okay, Bubsy being a bobcat makes more sense now. Guess I never made the connection between him and Chester Cheetah since I didn't know the later even had games. Loved the bit with Little Samson. but, seriously, over $8,000? How long will Magical Chase stay as queen of "Games that are too rich for my blood" on this show?
Oh heck, talking Battletech and Mechwarrior? I was originally a Summoner pilot because I was able to handle jump jets a lot better than most other players, but I later switched off to the Warhammer IIC, a 'Mech with enough firepower and heat sinks to slap most Clan heavies back to the Kerensky Cluster. Later on in the Inner Sphere expansions, I mained the Victor. Again, a combination of being good with jump jets and landing precision shots at close range with an AC/20 (and later Gauss rifles). Nothing kills the other guy deader than a 200mm cannon shell through the cockpit, and hey, salvage!
Didn't get into MechWarrior until I played the second game on PC, but been a fan since. Personally I loved the Timberwolf too, but also love the design of Atlus. I remember playing MechWarrior 3 online & destroying people by focusing on the legs.

I actually remember renting Bubsy back in '93. Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad and it made for a decent weekend rental but it very clearly felt like a less polished, less interesting clone of Sonic the Hedgehog, so I never felt any desire to pick it up again after that. Also, the Little Samson bit was hilarious! Poor little guy!
12:57 That "OH MY GOD", reminds me of that scene in The Iron Giant and another movie that, I think, Adam Sandler was in. I think it's the same actor too.
By the way, Super Bubsy wasn't Bubsy 3, it was just a port of the first bubsy. The real Bubsy 3 only came out for the Atari Jaguar, called Fractured Furry Tales.
Fun fact, the Yellow exclamation mark on Bubsy's shirt in the game was actually a programing issue, as it was registered as a null colour instead of it being red. Apparently the feature was not activated when porting the Genesis code to the Jaguar. Oh yeah, that game was sorta mentioned, if you saw the Super Bubsy image, you can see the Bubsy jaguar game slide down to the bottom, meaning that Jared doesn't want to acknowledge that game.
I'd say one of my favorite mechs is the Uziel (Yeah, yeah, I know). I'm sad that it kinda sucks in MWO (Its side torsos are huge, easy targets, so you can't really get away with putting an XL engine in it; which isn't great, considering its weight limit is only like 50 tons). That said, though, when you say "BattleMech", the one that springs to mind first is the Mad Kat Mk. II. I bought a beginner box for Battletech a little while ago, mostly because I'm developing my own Giant Robot game and I was looking for inspiration/wanted to make sure I wasn't just making Battletech again. I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but I have been playing MWO recently, and I'm interested in getting into the tabletop.
People bitching about Zelda's price should be reminded that it could have been a lot worse. Also, 70 bucks was a LOT of money back in 1993 compared to today. Also also, Action 52 which was 100 bucks, but IIRC the NES version was a staggering 200 bucks.
As a genesis kid, I had a copy of bubsy 2 and played that game probably the most out of any other game I had. My uncle gave me a copy. He worked as a manager at kB toys. I remember he said it was completely sold out and everybody was coming into the store asking for it. I remember it had a cardboard case compared to the hard plastic cases most genesis games had
In Australia back in the day we had a show on TV called A*mazing. One of the sections of the show was a video game section and for a while they had bubsy and the challenge was seeing how many balls of yarn you could collect in the time limit.
So we went from Bubsy and Action 52 thirty years ago to Tears of the Kingdom today It's a bit late but I guess we can consider the balance of the universe restored
Actually Jared should have mentioned how Bubsy actually IS popular with a sizeable amount of people... for some reason(actually I know the reason, they were kids when the game came out)
I was just a kid who didn't know the name but wanted "That Caveman game." My parents picked up Chuck Rock. I mean it's not a bad game but I would have rather had Joe and Mac.
Well, Dylan... Both Jaleco and Data East are defunct, that's why they'd be affordable for the Switch Online store. Whomever had those rights would've just been sitting on them. Also, Operation Logic Bomb is actually surprisingly good. And... for the record, "The Ultimate Search & Destroy" is what's called a secondary title or subtitle, or explanatory title. The primary title is just "Operation Logic Bomb". I know the bit was meant for fun, but it came across as more ignorant than comedic, which isn't intended as a criticism, but I figured I should share that as feedback.
Bubsy was a very pleasant looking game. I honestly enjoyed it. More so because you could use the momentum system to throw him across stages with hits that would kill him. Like hitting a car at the top of a hill and just tumbling down the entire thing. Dylan segment's still rule. So much personality and effort fornthkse jokes. Shadowgate next week hmmm?
The Timberwolf (MadCat) is a good favorite because of how good it is a being effective at any range. Personally I'm a sucker for missile boats like the Archer or 'mechs with niche roles like the variant of the Catapult that was equipped with a single artillery piece.
Jared as a Jade Falcon!? My childhood wants to issue a Bachall for Clan Wolf My adult self is prepping nukes in the Hayades cluster in fear the Fedsuns are behind it all…(Taurians for you non BT nerds)
I played the original PC version of MechWarrior not long after it came out and really loved it. It was my introduction to the BattleTech Universe and I've been a huge fan ever since, eventually playing the tabletop version (which I still play to this day), and most if not all video game releases at some point or another. I even used to play in the Virtual World Pods and eventually was inducted into The Order of Burton (IYKYK). Sadly, I never found the SNES version of MechWarrior to be all that impressive. The lack of canon 'Mechs and the diversion from the original story kind of turned me off a bit. Still a fun game in it's own right, but I prefer the original. Also, DIE FILTHY CLANNER! Just kidding, I had to throw that out there, lol. I'm an Inner Sphere Merc through and through! Also, Editor Dylan is still in top form and I love his segments! Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!
The other bit of Mechwarrior the Simulation games is it takes it's name from the tabletop RPG extension of the Battletech universe. Also, Jade Falcon keeps forgetting to pay their HPG bills...
I don't remember when it was released but Bubsy also got a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port. I remember playing it and the sequel. I remember the first being so frustrating because of the one-hit thing, but the sequel being a generally better game. And the second game had a neat multiplayer where player 2 played as a fairy who could either help or hinder player 1 depending on the mode.
The sequel was incredibly unfocused. They just threw everything at the wall. It didn't make much sense. I actually liked the first game but then again I had to really master it. It's really hard.
I'm only familiar with Mechwarrior 2 for PC, and it's been so long that I don't remember if I favored any chassis, just that I would load up on enough lasers to knock out a leg in one blast. I played with so many jank configurations where I would instantly explode from overheating as soon as I pulled the trigger, or had jets for backup movement to compensate for low armor and a tendency to have my own legs blown off.
I had a friend who slapped together an urbanmech with 1 machine gun and every other ounce of space was dedicated to ammunition. It could fire continously for days, but one or two hits was all it took to cause an ammunition explosion that there was no surviving from. Good times!
I realise I'm going to have to revoke all of my Internet privileges after this... but I actually had a lot of fun with the first two levels of Bubsy. *Ducks...* Seriously, the funfair level was actually... fun? (Except for that door maze section.) And the first level was pretty good as well. The main problem was the one-hit kills of course. But they didn't really become a problem until the third act, when... let's just say the devs decided to ramp up the difficulty by ramping up the cheap hits. This was not great. For a character obviously inspired so much by the likes of Mario and Sonic, Bubsy sure could've done with some rings or mushrooms.
The Bubsy pilot didn't just air on that one station in Pittsburgh. I was a kid in Michigan back in the day, and remember this aired on ABC one Saturday morning.
I remember playing a lot of Bubsy as a kid and absolutely loving it. Then years and years later when I started using the internet I came to find out people said it was bad. I was aghast as these opinions as I enjoyed the crazy speed and hilarious one-liners. Then I started to read about why it was bad... and yeah, okay, it is a bad game hahahaha! So funny what life was like growing up before the internet and having explanations for things. Thank you so much for the continued awesomenss of the channel!
Honestly, I really like Bubsy as a character. Sure, he can be rather obnoxious and that could absolutely be toned down a little, but he's pretty much Gex before Gex was even a character. Gex is also an awesome character in my opinion. I just love both of their 90s reference throwing and zany attitude. Guessing I'm probably in the minority for liking these guys though.
The first Bubsy game is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I definitely wouldn't call it good, but the jankiness and Bubsy's voice lines have some appeal to me. And the soundtrack is really good too!
I've said it numerous times here but the game isn't THAT bad. I actually liked the challenge when I was younger. I guess I would compare it to Dark Souls in the sense that it seems unfair but with practice can be mastered (as soon as you master the glide). It also looked good and sounded good.
@@ianbarbati6236 and punchout to me was easy all the way up to Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream. It is however a lot of trial, error and recognizing patterns which I guess you could say the same for Dark Souls (and even Bubsy).
@bingusdingus8004 I did grow up with bubsy as a kid tho too. And I got to the 3rd level. But I always loved the game the foreground and backgrounds. Going down sewer pipes.
So Bubsy proved that you can (sort of) buy your way into success. Also, game magazines back then were really "objective". I wonder how many kids were suckered into buying Bubsy because of that.
I had it. However I didn't ask for it. My dad bought his Co-workers Genesis when he got a 3DO and all his games. He was like 19 at the time so he fell for it. Still I would easily pick Bubsy to play over Batman Returns (which he had also owned). Batman Returns was the first game I traded in.
@@WhereAllYourDeletedCommentsGo I probably couldn't now. I think being a kid with only one game to play at a time is the only reason I bothered finishing it lol. I rented it from Movie Gallery.
I still think about Dylan's "TIME Cruise..." joke, that was so perfect. Sometimes I show that clip to people XD couldn't have had a more perfect opportunity with those games being released in the same week...
WOAH, Clan JADE FALCON? No no no. Clan Wolf is the best Clan, good thing Dylan is doing his part otherwise I would dislike this video just for that. Seriously though, Mechwarrior 2 is still such a ridiculously good upgrade from 1 in my opinion that I didn't even play 1 when I had it.
Active Enterprises saying that they are going to release a handheld called "The Game Master" that can let you play SNES and Genesis games, as well as NES and MS/GG games *AND* watch TV is so ridiculous. It's like when two kids argue about who's monster is better and one of the kids say "My monster can breathe fire, fly, run fast, do time stops and has infinite power + 1" lol

When I saw that 0 during Dylan's part I was like 'waiiiit a minute, no wayyy.' Poor Little Samson.
The dev played Sonic 1 for 14 hours a day and still got Bubsy's gameplay wrong
So we went from Bubsy and Action 52 thirty years ago to Tears of the Kingdom today
It's a bit late but I guess we can consider the balance of the universe restored
I don't think the once innovative Zelda series becoming a UbiSoft clone is the W you think it is
@@TellYouHwaet Hottest take of the millennium
Bubsy was one of my favourites when i was a kid, and i still go back to it from time to time.
Bubsy was one of my favorite SNES games as a kid. The PC game was a port of the first game. There was a third game on the Jaguar before Bubsy 3D.
My god. I'm so sorry for what you went through.
@@metanightmare4454 I mean, his favorite? There are like a hundred better games than that.
Bubsy Jaguar was briefly shown sliding downward off screen, because clearly Jared did NOT want to mention that game at all.
Bubsy 3D is a Masterpiece
@@Invidente7 *One of my favorites, I also played a lot of Mario, Paperboy, and SimCity growing up.
Actually Jared should have mentioned how Bubsy actually IS popular with a sizeable amount of people... for some reason(actually I know the reason, they were kids when the game came out)
Memes, he's low-hanging fruit.
I love Joe and Mac, and can't wait for next week!
I was just a kid who didn't know the name but wanted "That Caveman game." My parents picked up Chuck Rock. I mean it's not a bad game but I would have rather had Joe and Mac.
"What could possibly go wrong?"
Apparently nothing since he got rebooted after the infamous disaster of Bubsy 3D.
You knew Samson was brought up too much to not be replaced by the end of the video, but *damn*. Did the little guy dirty.
Ever since the Little Samson episode I've been waiting for Magical Chase to show up; now I'm curious if it'll ever be dethroned.
The Timberwolf (MadCat) is a good favorite because of how good it is a being effective at any range. Personally I'm a sucker for missile boats like the Archer or 'mechs with niche roles like the variant of the Catapult that was equipped with a single artillery piece.
Thumbs up for editor Dylan bullying a child.
Awww. Poor Little Samson. At least he still can spin jump like no other.
You made Little Samson cry. I guess now I gotta play his game to make him feel better
"Samson, let me see what you have"
"A zero!"
"NO!!"
The first Bubsy is unironically one of my favorite games ever.
And one of my biggest regrets is playing full price for that terrible 2017 reboot.
When purchasing that 2017 reboot did you ask yourself "What can possibly go wrong ?"
HEY! Thanks for featuring my comment from last week in today's episode! :D
Bubsy’s creator passed way earlier this year may he rest in peace
Well I guess the answer to "What can possibly go wrong ?" Is death. RIP.
@@Gatorade69 wtf dude
Press F to pay respects to the former king of most expensive retro game. RIP Little Samson. 😓
The Little Samson bit was great.
I also love the Timberwolf! I really miss MechAssault on the original Xbox.. I would love that to be re-released
I wonder how many of those Inner Sphere players gonna call heresy on that.
Jared as a Jade Falcon!?
My childhood wants to issue a Bachall for Clan Wolf
My adult self is prepping nukes in the Hayades cluster in fear the Fedsuns are behind it all…(Taurians for you non BT nerds)
Forget Bubsy. I wanna hear about those Full House action figure sets at 3:28
I played the original PC version of MechWarrior not long after it came out and really loved it.
Always awesome to see more of Jared, Dylan and Jared's t-shirts.
you know it's the mother fucking WEEKEND when you get to watch a new episode of Now in the 90s OH FUcK YEAH
The other bit of Mechwarrior the Simulation games is it takes it's name from the tabletop RPG extension of the Battletech universe. Also, Jade Falcon keeps forgetting to pay their HPG bills...
Impressive how bubsy lost so much value. I thought it would be worth something just because of rarity, though I guess its not as rare as I thought
2:40 Bubsy slash fic? Thanks for the nightmare fuel, Jared.
13:32 Wow standalone cartridge and complete package are asymmetrical in their pricing. I don't think that happens very often does it
I don't remember when it was released but Bubsy also got a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port.
Well actually, in Bubsy 2, the second player played as either Bubsy's nephew or niece, not a fairy.
I now tune in every week just to hear Editor Dylans antics lol
Good times!
I’m very excited for the 26th episode. Because that’s my birthday.
If Now in the 90's somehow existed on TV in the 90's, I'd be so excited to watch it every week on Friday.
It may be rose-tinted glasses but I loved Bubsy as a kid. It was tough but the level designs and art style were great.
I realise I'm going to have to revoke all of my Internet privileges after this... but I actually had a lot of fun with the first two levels of Bubsy.
*Ducks...*
Seriously, the funfair level was actually...
Dylan made me feel bad for Little Samson. How dare you, sir!
little samson crying is STILL less annoying than Bubsy voice....
Shadowrun next week? 👀
That Magical Chase twist is sickening. Ain't no way I even want to dream of affording that
The Bubsy pilot didn't just air on that one station in Pittsburgh.
There was a mech called a "Grand Crusader" but it wasnt introduced until whenever they were doing the 3058 or 3060 timeframes in the early 00's.
I LOVE Gex. I wish SOMEONE would make A new Gex game. 🦎
Gex was cool. I loved all the television jokes.
Bubsy crawled so Gex could...also crawl. On walls.
Jeb Jab: “Is it Gex night?”
I adore Bubsy too, as a character.
@@WhereAllYourDeletedCommentsGo Yeah I wouldn't call it bad either, just a middling game with a bit of goofy charm.
That's funny I say that Punchout was like dark souls to me.
That Shadowrun tease gave me chills. That game is so amazing.
Bubsy was one of those i rented after school friday and begged my parents to take back to the rental store Saturday morning after cartoons.
That’s pretty much my experience too.
Y’all are far and away my favorite yt channel!!
Bubsy wouldn't have been as horrible if not for the one hit deaths. I dunno how I beat it as a kid but I sure raged while doing it.
I could never beat it but I did get very close.
@@WhereAllYourDeletedCommentsGo I probably couldn't now. I think being a kid with only one game to play at a time is the only reason I bothered finishing it lol. I rented it from Movie Gallery.
Don’t forget Jazz Jackrabbit (which was great!)
I still love you lil Samson! It's ok buddy. This episode was exceptionally funny!
The way your editor Dylan screams ‘Oh my god’ reminds me of Happy Gilmore when his rival sees his tall boss. He has the same cadence.
I still think about Dylan's "TIME Cruise..." joke, that was so perfect. Sometimes I show that clip to people XD couldn't have had a more perfect opportunity with those games being released in the same week...
Bubsy had some serious nerve coming out at 69.99?!?!😂😂
WOAH, Clan JADE FALCON? No no no. Clan Wolf is the best Clan, good thing Dylan is doing his part otherwise I would dislike this video just for that.
Seriously though, Mechwarrior 2 is still such a ridiculously good upgrade from 1 in my opinion that I didn't even play 1 when I had it.
I used to call it Boobsy
Active Enterprises saying that they are going to release a handheld called "The Game Master" that can let you play SNES and Genesis games, as well as NES and MS/GG games *AND* watch TV is so ridiculous.
It's like when two kids argue about who's monster is better and one of the kids say "My monster can breathe fire, fly, run fast, do time stops and has infinite power + 1" lol
I'm just thinking of the amount of batteries a Game Master would kill 😂
What could possibly go wrong?
accoedinf to the stage name EVERYTHING
Everything
I love how Dylan has come into his own.
