I don't understand the language but I understand the heart.
Watching that lonely old man trying his best, warms your heart and fills you with determination.
I can understand the story as well as the language. The song Canon in D by Pachelbel was originally should be played with Violin but can also be played with Piano. The story begins is that the girl is getting married with the boy and her father played Canon in D as a gift and memory of her dead mother who played the same song as well when she was young and before she died. When her mother died, she didn't talked to her father that much and abandoned playing the piano. The father understands her daughter so he tried to learn the song that his wife used to play. It was a gift for his daughter. Canon in D is hard to play in the piano unless you really ant to play it plus it is not really arranged for piano but for violin. Music has meaning and also it gives a letter to a person. Piano is one of the best musical instruments I can describe, I know this because I play the piano as well.

My favorite part is when he hit the wrong note 2:38 , he stops, stares at the sheet, then goes back and corrects it while the bride encourages him in quiet. My tears roll down
The deadpan look on father's face, which is somehow, incredibly conveying powerful emotion nonetheless, gets to me as much as the tiny expression clues playing all over the daughter's (and then bride's) face during the story.
So veeeery Japanese, that need to get it absolutely right, even by admitting one's flaws and doing it again correctly, even in public. A very touching piece of cultural realism.
Of course, this is the crucial moment of the video sequence, when the father makes a mistake. He tries again and his daughter changes her attitude, encouraging her father. For me, the most important moment that makes me cry is when she simulates with the fingers of her right hand the typing of missed notes on the piano keyboard to help her father. It sanctifies the newfound communion between father and daughter

I've been watching this every so often for the past two or three years. I have no understanding of the Japanese language, but I understand pain, suffering and forgiveness. I understand loss, and how it can leave you feeling so isolated and alone. And I understand the power of music to move us through the heartache. Gives us an outlet for it and builds a bridge between people who so need to connect. I am so grateful that a Japanese music company made such a commercial.

I also play just one song for only one person. Since the day she's gone away, I tried to learn to play the song she loves. I play it every year on the day she's gone I'm so moved by this commercial.
OMG, dude. My eyes started watering at 1 minute, 15 seconds. I couldn't finish it in one sitting.
I had no idea that the Pachelbel could have such a strong impact on people's lives.
Symbols are like that. Here is another example; If you were married and you wore a wedding ring, could I tell about the quality of your marriage by looking at that ring? Obviously, no. But what would looking at that ring mean to you? You would remember the first time you saw her, the first kiss. i love commercials that is worth to be watched because in everytime you see this kind of commercial has a lesson about life and it makes you cry for a good reason. But some other commercials are just a waste of time doing stupidly unfunny commercials. I salute to people out there who experienced this emotional and hardworking tragedy to there life :)

I don't think she was slightly ashamed or embarrassed of her dad. And chances are she probably hugged him after the whole thing. I don't know what is like at where you are from, but most asian countries are very family orientated. They really love their family. I guess she was saying those things playfully for one, it also shows how close they are. Secondly, probably because she wants to make something sad cheerful, it's the same idea as trying to make a scary movie funny. In any case there is no doubt that if she was really embarrassed of her dad, she wouldnt even let him on the piano in the first place, or simply walk out.
I dont know about you but I prefer black and white weddings because it's clean and simple. That's one of the main reasons why they chose those two colours for funerals, it's pure.

I must admit, it's not the best nor most touching commercial out there. In any case I think you are being slightly too harsh on them haha. It is like you said, a cultural thing. In a few countries, the sign of playfulness signifies how strong a relationship is. And you can tell by her voice she didnt mean it disrespectfully.

Their timing is much slower and nuanced. Rethink the scene where he pauses before starting playing - by drawing it out, it pulls you in.

Then the flashback shows the mother/daughter ...the mother was playing the piano... then i guess the mom died and the daughter didn't really get along with the father. The father tried his best and learned the piano for her daughter's wedding (Canon in D) . At the end,she said... " keep going, do your best" to her father.

I've seen this possibly several dozen times by now. I'm a widower going on twelve years. It reminds me of not only my dear, late wife , but so many other people as well. Beautiful.
keep in mind that I am not Japanese but "ya mete" means something like "stop it". So she wants her father to stop at first. Then "nande" or "Nani" means something like "why?" so shes like why are you eve doing this because that song obviously brings up painful memories. At the end she says "gambete" (pheonetic spelling, rly sorry if I sound like a total weeb) but that means "go for it" or "good luck", so in the end she seen how much effort that must have taken and she wants him to do well and is happy.

I can’t here this song without reminding me of a old man I help when I was in my 20s he was 86 and hadn’t left his house for 3 years due to disabilities and I took the time to care for him taking him on some adventures until people thought I was after his money so to save having my name wrecked I lost contact the guy a year later he called me from his deathbed asking to leave me everything so I said leave it all to a charity I don’t want it and the family got nothing it ended up going to cancer research what made me really happy because it was pure friendship I genuinely had an interest in him his life everything didn’t even think of money. Wonderful song with such power reminds me of a great person and evil people at the same time

I could not speak the language but the images told the story. The mom used to play that music all the time. Mom was not there for her daughter’s wedding. So dad learned to play that song, put up a photo of his wife on the piano. Crying so much. Best commercial ever!

Kinda nice! The visual expresses everything! they once were a happy family but the mom died. since that day the dad seemed to be in in shock and became negligent to the daughter. Not because he didnt care about her, but he just could not get over the death of his wife. That was a huge shock in his heart. The daughter just did not understand he became so cold. Now she knows that her dad has a never mended heart. I like the part she says "ganbate, ganbare otosan" she encourages him to overcome the pain. The hell am I saying all this crap? Gotta punch wall to regain my manliness!!!
