I was listening to the title theme of this game recently, and was just idly doing some writing on the side, nothing too big, when I noticed that I had that feeling in my chest that you get when you long for something, or are about to cry. I didn't really get it, though I admit the title theme is surprisingly cozy for a game like this, until I remembered how old the game really is. I remember watching the oldest videos on it, and being scared of the 'big scary horror game'. Maybe I just long for simpler times? Who knows. Either way, I always love re-watching your Hello Neighbor videos, 8-BitRyan, keep making great content!
the car crash was in alpha 3 where a tire came out of the basement. and when you finish you can see the neighbor crying. maybe his son/daughter died in the car crash? and he is keeping a stranger child in his basement because he misses his kid so much? like this so ryan can see or whatever
Or what I think based on someone else's comment is that his wife died his kids survived but he made a deal with the devil to bring back his wife which meant the devil now gets his kids so he's locking them and his wife in the basement and putting up fake pictures of the outside to give them a false sense of freedom
I had to make a really difficult decision of if I wanted to spoil the story before playing, and I realized you were a great youtuber and it was the best gaming decision ever.

The developers have basically been trying to create their own language by randomly mixing Russian characters, but now to seems like they've used English ones? At least that's what they said when Beta 3 was released.
Noah in the old betas it used to be in Russian i believe that got changed in beta three (i think if you want you can look into it) from the 3rd beta it has been actual English words but they mixed up all the letters and all that but if you pay attention you could have told it means missing

My theory SO FAR... The neighbor had a daughter. That explains the blocked off bedroom and the doll But, the shadow man crashed into neighbors car on purpose to kill the daughter. That’s why the neighbor was crying at the ambulance scene. The shadow man killed the neighbors daughter because he wants the neighbor to capture children for him. I say the shadow man is neighbors dad. The picture of the stick figure with the babies hanging off of her arms explains that the neighbors father didn’t like neighbor, so got rid of him on purpose. That explains the baby that fell off the mothers arms. Now, the dad still doesn’t like neighbor and wants him to be miserable, so he is making neighbor capture children with the hope neighbor gets caught by the police. Does this make sense?

(I stole this idea from someone else) the neighbor must have been crying because he had 2 kids one girl and one boy. They died in the car crash which is why he is crying and the signs have a boy and girl missing. He went into rage then wanted to bring his kids back by killing others (probably in a ritual of some sort). (This was not the exact comment i read but meh close enough with some of my own words!)
As act 2 I’m pretty sure that you play is the original kid. Notice how he was missing a shoe and in act 1 Ryan pointed out that he found a sungular shoe...
This is just a thought. At 12:43 you find a shoe that someone had lost and at act 2 when you get caught you are missing a shoe as well. There has to be a reason as to whoever went into basement looses a shoe. It could be ironic but I don't think so. Can't wait for the next episode to see what happens next.
I think I understand the story... The neighbor’s kid died in the car crash, and that “Kid’s Room”was his son or daughter’s room. He mourned the loss of his child so much he started kidnapping children to replace his dead child. However, he would test them and see if any resembled his child and acted like him. If not, they lived in the rooms forever until they escaped, leading the neighbor to become mad. And since you are a child in the game, the neighbor is after you.
It was his son i don't know how to explain this so its short but the neighbor had a family of four and then the mother died in a car accident and the neighbor stopped paying attention to his two childrens to be realistic a son and daughter and he started building all those big houses and the son actually pushed the daughter of the house by accident and the neighbor didn't want his son to get taken away so he locked him in the basement

It was his son i don't know how to explain this so its short but the neighbor had a family of four and then the mother died in a car accident and the neighbor stopped paying attention to his two childrens to be realistic a son and daughter and he started building all those big houses and the son actually pushed the daughter of the house by accident and the neighbor didn't want his son to get taken away so he locked him in the basement
