  • In this episode, Dr. Nader sits down with Dr. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein to discuss: What is consciousness and what is reality? What do we know and what do we not know?
Dr. Goldstein is an acclaimed novelist and brilliant philosopher. She studied philosophy at Barnard and earned her Ph.D. at Princeton University. Her career bridges the cultural divides between the humanities, the arts and the sciences. She has written several books and won several awards, including a MacArthur Genius Award and the National Humanities Medal, awarded by former President, Barack Obama. Dr. Goldstein taught at several universities and lectures all over the world. Her first novel, "The Mind-Body Problem”, was a great success. Nine more books have followed, and now she's also writing and preparing a new book. Seven of these books were fiction, including "36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction”. And two philosophical biographies, “Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Gödel” and “Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity”. Goldstein's latest book is “Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away.” She is an important voice in the current active debates between religion and science.

Please have another dialogue with Dr. Goldstein!! This was a superb interaction between two educated, curious, and open minds. After both have digested this conversation another even better one is bound to emerge.

The not knowing of Consciousness of what it's like to be a finitude has got to be imaginary. In the field of all possibilities the knowing of ALL possibilities must already exist simultaneously. The way Consciousness EXPERIENCES each one will be experienced sequentially, which is what provides the knowing of the experience. Infinite possibilities must include how each decision plays out in every time and every space and every combination of bits, patterns, modes, and choices.
It is a pleasure to watch Dr. Goldstein following Dr. Nader without missing a step. This helps me integrate the concepts Dr. Nader presents. Different disciplines are all structured from the structure of Consciousness and exploring their depths helps reveal the common structure of everything.

That analogy of the hard drive of infinity knowing everything except what it is like to be an individual and not know everything was brilliant. The idea that time and space are the means for infinity to become localized made everything click. I highly enjoyed the discussion.

I loved all of this but, in particular, the part about Spinoza's "The Will to Continue", which Dr. Nader proposes comes out of the will to know, and that comes out of the will to be. How beautiful. The will to know is the engine. Without it, there would be no will to be or to continue.
How does this apply in current times, when so many people live in fear? It explains something that I've observed and now understand much better than before I watched this video. When you are in fear of something bad happening, you sometimes get into a RUSH to know, and so you don't actually search for truth. What you do is accept whatever you are told is the truth, so that you can maintain your will to be and to continue.
When the State "owns" the means of mass communication of "the truth", the knowledge that you gain is what the State wants you to know or believe. Furthermore, if you accept the State as the ultimate authority on the subject, you cling to this knowledge acquired in a state of fear and don't allow it to be questioned. Believing that it is true what allows you to go on. You are terrified of the void that will be left if this imposed belief is taken away from you, because you don't believe that you will have the time or the ability to find the truth, yourself.
This does not make for very enlightened times.

Such great observations from folks. I'm not much of a philosopher beyond practicing transcending as described by Dr.Nader. Frankly, this is the best description of the knowledge Dr. Nader is explaining that I have heard. Dr. Goldstein seems to naturally pull the good stuff out of him in such a natural way that I don't think I have ever heard it explained better. When you first experience clear transcending it pretty abstract. It's really great when someone can put it in words.
This is VERY applicable to current times. With mass communication and instant exposure to what is happening across the globe (not to mention in our backyards), it is absolutely essential to have an internal anchor that gives one a connection to what is happening while maintaining a sense of self preservation and relevance. We don't want to be too insulated nor can we afford to get sucked to a crisis to the point that we are incapacitated to help the real victims.

This was such a very interesting conversation. It was about 50 years ago when I took LSD (about 5 or 6 times). I think that experience formed my belief in the reality of universal unity which is how I view consciousness. I think it also led me to Transcendental Meditation in 1967. I tend to think that Dr. Goldstein never had that experience, and I wonder if it would have sent her on a different path. A wonderful back and forth between two brilliant minds. Thank you!

To experience reality we need Consciousness and matter but Consciousness is the source of all that there is all marvels of creation

Resonance, reflection, relationship, reality. What is the dynamic (or geometry?) for creation of space-time? This seems to be a question of the creation of boundary conditions, and is fundamental to all aspects and existences. I believe that through resonance we can experience "otherness"/essence. The "desire to know" is the motivation that is inherent in all "beings" and their actions (and does not require higher consciousness, only the awareness of difference), and fullfillment of this desire requires freedom within a context of limitations = choice.

"Essence" is a woo concept as used by Nader. Philosophers really meant it to be the "extreme abstraction" of a complex set of properties. Plato abused the term to give it real existence.

The freedom of making decesions is within the realm of Conscience and the freedom of applting the chosen decision is in the domain of reality.Geat knowledge consists in how connecting and balancing these two realms!

Spacetime individuation of observer, observed & observation process (samhita) at the Planck scale is the level of granularity at which Consciousness can see the wholeness of itself from infinite perspectives. Since spacetime is an emergent phenomenon of the Unified Field and has no limit (The UF being transcendent), the ability of Consciousness DOES see itself at infinite points, individually, each point being a reflection of the unbounded Totality (Brahman) in which they appear. "Indra's net", I think. The boundries glorify the unbounded by revealing the infinite ways that Intelligence becomes Intelligent, Consciousness becomes Conscious of itself. Aham Brahmasmi.

Wonderful remark-dear dr.Nader that seldom physicality determines consiousness -even the instinct of safety isn`t so strong as to foresee and predict right steps in enfirming both personal national security.E.g. Peace assembly is being held now in Anapa -the Black sea shore which can grossly improve the whole political atmosphere of the Caucasian and European regions. But somehow it`s impossible to go for half a day journey from Armenia to Russian Blacksea shore as the transportation is stopped from Erevan to Russia border through Georgia-why?!We`re peaceful neibours and no bariiers of any political and cultural sort should hinder us to communicate more over for the sake of preserving and enfirming Peace! But this is the reality.

Is there self-creating mathematics? Or is the self creating mathematics to describe itself.

Saying consciousness is the base of matter, really means that YOU are so precious that the universe needs you. The height of narcissism. A true Buddhist doesn't think such stuff.
