"I have always been attracted to stories with an ironical twist. Between a story of a hijabi girl aspiring to be a professional wrestler or a young mother battling for the soul of her stepchild with a Pontianak, I often find that film is the best medium to have these stories told. Bak Kwa continues my yearning to tell such stories again. To me, the best short films are those that fearlessly tackle serious issues head-on...perhaps with a light touch of pathos and comedy. Bak Kwa talks about lofty themes about religion and our generation’s conflict of carving our own path versus those expected of our parents. But hopefully done in a non-cloying and non-pandering way. I hope you’ll enjoy the film as much as I had making it." - Director's statement from M. Raihan Halim
As a parent, his concerns are definitely valid but it also highlights the importance of acceptance and the power of sincerity and love for others. It is a really sweet and touching story.
The father's concern is valid. BakKwa seller marrying a muslim girl , how to deal with life style change? bakkwa business succession plan? still going to favorite restaurant or must switch to halal? it is going to be a nightmare... better dont lah
The father had legitimate concerns and addressed it by evolving. If his son decides to marry Nurin, the business does not necessarily have to shut down as it could also evolve. Imaging being bale to serve halal bak kwa!
This is what i don't get with super conservative, families, especially Chinese families. Its usually the father, or mother, in some cases the whole family on the Chinese side who frown upon one of their ralatives, sons or daughters or nephews or nieces who start dating another person outside of their own ethnic race which i find so narrow minded. Especially in Singapore, Mainland China, or even Hong Kong. I grew up in a very open minded family myself. As long as the couple are happy, thats what counts. With time, family can learn to live with it, & learn about other cultures as well. Its a big world out there, so many cultures, so many ethnicities to learn from. What a great video.
this a new point of view for me, but i know that there are a lotI know that evens like this are very common happen in real life, especially in Indonesia although not all endings are the same
she did the right to make the father comfortable, the son is an idiot, definitely should consult your parents before getting into serious stuff. Let them be comfortable. When you make sudden changes and practices and expecting people to get along, you are the troublemaker. Love is not always about ending up together, love should mean more than that.
assimilation is always a challenge between difference races and religions. If humans can have blood transfusions and organ transplants -then ideologies and religions can be put aside because those beliefs often were used to preserve ones' ethnicities.... with the world getting smaller and the digital world taught us that no matter where the electrons are performing their functions in the computers or smart phones - they cross all barriers like race, religion and culture
Don't we all agree that religion is essentially about human beings & the divine being (commonly addressed as 'god' or 'gods'). Although one may go through different ways in his / her effort of finding The One true God, I personally think that changing one's religion due to romantic reason can be heavily biased. If I were Nurin in this movie, I wouldn't want Jason to just suddenly change his religion because he's in love with me.

His father ended up liking Nurani just because of "soccer"? LOL
