Here is the first video where we discovered this hive had a 2% varroa infestation!! th-cam.com/video/CJgdABOXzAE/w-d-xo.html
2% would be 6 mites in a wash of 300 bees. Half a cup is typically very close to 300 bees

so awesome to hear this! I usually use thymol here in sweden. Mix between Apiguard and pure thymol. I see similar result. This have been a good year though, so I need to think about that too. Seams like My beeyear is something between Michel Palmer and Ian Steppler. I lissen a lot to them explaining how to deal with bees. Without you Kamon and Bob and the rest of the comunity, I would be a much worse beekeeper and more of a beehaver....
All of you, thank for spreading the word and thanks for your love for bees and beekeepers! Lot´s of love from sweden!

    Thank you Kamon.
Can't wait to see the results on the extended OA
I did the same Thymol treatment this year on 20 hives had great results except for one hive that totally ignored the Thymol.
It was very strange they're a booming colony but they didn't remove the Thymol or slow down on the brood rearing.
All of my other hives washed at 0's or 1's but they had 10.

Thank you be transparent with your work it's a nice way for all of us hobbiest to learn. I also applied Thymol the same way this year and at first I thought I had really hurt my queen's because of their laying pattern, but they all bounced back and are in full swing.

As a new bee keeper this information is appreciated. The time and effort that is given to help others out is heartwarming. Can this treatment be considered of results for most colonies with percentages ? I am trying to consider treatments for next year .This year I used formic and it left me a little nervous.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

In our research this year we have 12 colonies going thru the same treatment protocol. We will be releasing that in October.
I hope the effectiveness for the other 12 with the same treatment, treatment schedule and mite load percentage will also reflect a good mite reduction.
Thymol is my preferred treatment since it is more natural than some and more gentle than formic.
I would not want to have percentages higher than 2% though. Even if thymol will kill the mites if viruses have taken hold we do not have a product to kill viruses yet.

Looking forward to your next OA results video Kamon. We tried tests of the monster fall doses . It didn't go well. Zero mites. But our guess was that the queen stopped laying our much needed winter bees. 80% spring dead outs. Not pretty.

Hello Kamon, I know you are very busy now but if you could advise it would help. I am a first year keeper that only started with one hive. I have a four year old son that has a tracheostomy and spent the first two and a half years on a ventilator and has already had 6 surgeries. Then covid came and we have been limiting where we go until his doctors fell a little more confident. Needless to say I haven't gone to my local club but was able to get my bees from a local "master Beekeeper" who has since stopped replying to my texts. My problem is 42 days ago I did a mite check doing an alcohol wash and saw a 3% infestation. I have a double deep setup and put 4 apivar strips in 2 per box and did 5 rounds of approx 3g of OAV 6 days apart. I was hoping this would knock the mites back before the temps started getting too low. Today was the end of the apivar treatment and I did another wash this time trying dawn soap and came back with a 5% infestation. I have seen some people do a side by side with dawn, and alcohol and the dawn gave a higher count. I don't know if this is the case but I still have a higher mite load. I need to try and get this down so your opinion would be greatly appreciated! My temps are between the 40-80 range for the foreseeable future. Like I said I have a double deep setup with about 2 frames of brood and the rest but 2 mixed with brood and stores. Thank You Joey

Our bees are resistant to chalkbrood, efb, tracheal, Nosema ceranae, and ceranae apis, and then deal with SHB, new strains of viruses, and two types of varroa mites.
I think they are doing very well for all the new pressures they have encountered in the last few decades

Oxalic acid is also in Rhubarb leaves. Sugar beets leaves were cooked and fed to cows in the early 1900s. For safety in the cattle if you didn't cook the feed mash, the animals would get sick
