    Love Apiguard for "Zero" Mites ! 👍
    Alas in the UK, they get us in the Kerching (£€$) Department... We can't buy Buckets and self dose... its sold in individual Tray Units ! Costs a lot more £££... 👀
    But it's still worth it, re getting rid of Varroa Mites, in this time of raising pending Winter Bees.

    Found one downside to treating with Thymol.
    Honey flow slowed /stopped a couple weeks ago so I pulled the supers and treated with Thymol.
    I used a 3.5 Inch shim to give the bees some room to access.
    In the two weeks between treatments the flow kicked back on and the bees filled that whole cavity with burr comb.
    What a mess!!!

    Love seeing the horizontal hive development! Apiguard is my August treatment tool of choice, too, and the bucket and syringe make it easy to adjust the dosage for different hive needs. I once use a medium box as a spacer for Apiguard treatment and regretted it, because it held the smell of Apiguard for over a year, and I didn't want to use it as a honey super for a long time.

    Hey Kamon, what are the temperatures where you are and how often are you treating? The PDF put out by Apiguard says if your temperatures are above 77 degrees to use 2 doses of 25 grams one week apart for a deep box and 3 doses for a heavy infestation. I see you are using 33 grams for three cycles which may be a good idea if you are splitting the difference between 25 to 50 grams. Thanks for providing us with your videos! My question is, should I use 25g, 33g, or 50g? Our temperatures here are still in the 90 degree range.

    I was thinking that given you are not sampling the average bee your stats are actually high. Nurse bees have 2% but what percent of the hive are the nurse bees? It would indicate that a hive at an actual 1% at this time of year may still be on its way out. cheers

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe so but the mites will double in 21 days and the next generation is what they are doing the damage too not really the old bees.
      I agree the wash is imperfect but I would rather err on the side of caution as we find much greater success with keeping mites very low and not allowing the viruses the mites carry to become a factor! Thanks for the conversation and for watching!

    First year I haven't treated in Aug feeling kinda weird about it .. going to trust the science.. just not seeing much in my washes one here and there.. most are zeros using full cups.. so I've decided pull couple frames of brood that will lower the counts and I'll just treat the nucs I make up. Apivar took them out last spring and I'm breeding to my most mite resistance colony's can't hurt

    I just bought my first six hives so this might be a stupid question but why not just treat without killing bees? Does treating harm the bees if they have no mites?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some are fairly disruptive but most don't kill bees. The main problem is that it is not common to get 90% kill every time with a treatment. If you get 80% kill with a 1% infestation... your good. What if you have a 4-5% infestation? It will knock them back but the mite load will still be too high and since we don't know we will lose that colony and as it crashes the rest of our hives will rob the resources out and pick up the mites and viruses. Potentially causing a domino effect.
      I think you can treat without checking but that probably means you need to over treat to be sure.
      I have decided that to my operation it is worth it to sacrifice bees just as bees sacrifice bees, drones, and queens whenever they fill it necessary. It took me about 16 years to get to that point!
      Anyways happy beekeeping and thanks for the comment Brad!
