Thank you, Tasha! I am Leroy’s wife. We enjoyed watching your reaction to his self-penned song, Auctioneer, which he wrote while serving in the U.S. Army in Korea in 1953. He wrote it about his cousin, Ray Sims, who inspired him to go to auction school between his junior and senior years in college. He is still performing and will be 94 in October. We thank you for spotlighting “Auctioneer.”

Leroy Van Dyke hales from my home state of Missouri. He was/is a licensed auctioneer and was often hired by the Missouri State Fair to auction off the grand champion ham. The song is true except for one word. No, Leroy didn't write it about himself. He wrote it about his uncle, who inspired Leroy to become and auctioneer. The one word that is not true is "Arkansas" in the first line. Leroy said he couldn't find a word to rhyme with "Missouri." Leroy is still performing a limited schedule at the age of 92 or 93.

"Walk on By" was his beautiful #1 hit five years after he hit the top ten with this... and during that five years NOTHING of his charted on the country or pop charts.

This is the first time I've listened to this song since I was a kid in the 1960s. My parents had Leroy Van Dyke "greatest hits" album, and I'd occasionally put it on the record player, with this song being one of my favorites.
