    Don't run abreast of each other, blocking trails, or even roadways. Even as a long time runner, I want to strangle the groups that make me swerve completely onto the other side to pass, or even wait long periods for a safe place to do so. "Share the road" works both ways.

    One of my rules, which is similar to that last one, is don't assume you know everything about another runner. For example, if you see someone running slower than you, don't tell them to "pick it up!" because you have no idea what kind of training they're doing or what their speeds are. Also, don't assume that what works for you will work for someone else. As a person with some chronic illnesses, certain fuels or even gear doesn't work for me the way it would for someone else and its really frustrating to hear those suggestions when I don't ask!

    My biggest pet peeve is when I'm running on a trail and there is a person with unleashed dogs.
    Leash laws exist for a reason and I have almost been bit a few times out on my long runs

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Guilty. I've had German Shepherds who needed loads more mental and physical exercise than what I'd give on leash. However, they've both been well trained and completely non aggressive. Running off leash on trails is one of the biggest joys of my (and their) lives, and I'll continue to do so with all my dogs, making sure first that they're not a danger to others. I usually put a cheerful bandana on them to make them friendlier looking, and consider it breed public relations for other trail users to be able to interact with my "scary wolves " IF they choose to, so they can experience firsthand that dogs do not equal danger. Bad owners equal danger.

    • @ichimarutetsu
      @ichimarutetsu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Kelly_Ben yea, I totally put an exception to well train dogs. I'm more speaking of dogs that arent recall trained. One day a lady was yelling and shouting at her dogs and they simply weren't trained and definitely not listening lok

      @johndewitte 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ,@@Kelly_Ben I have been a GSD breeder for many a year and I know you can never know how a dog will react, no matter how good they have been trained. it might go well a 1000 times but the 1001st time... you´re screwed... People will not remember the 1000 times but the 1001st time. If you want them to have more physical exercise you might consider urban mushing or going running with your dogs, if that is possible,
      Besides, there really are people who are afraid of dogs, just as there are people who are scared of spiders or mice,...

    For me, if I see others down the road from me running in my direction, I tend to cross the street as a courtesy. Also, being a runner, I’ve come to learn that when you’re running, others may not be aware of your presence, so I do it if they’re running away from as to not startle them if I happen to catch up.

    Run against traffic is one. I constantly see runners running with traffic on roads, which is very dangerous. Runners run against traffic because it's much easier for us to see cars oncoming and get out of the way than it is to hear them behind us, especially with the rise of electric cars which don't make any noise at all.

    • @marktracey2088
      @marktracey2088 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% with you on that one. I am amazed how many don't realise that this is the approach that all people on foot should use when walking on country roads. It was something I remember being told when I was at school.

    • @miski1969
      @miski1969 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I sort of agree but I make an exception for hills & bends. I don't want to be running into traffic approaching a blind bend or the brow of a steepish hill so I try & get on the side of the road where I'll give cars the longest time to see me. Road races on open roads also require you to run with the traffic in the UK, at least all the ones I've done.

    • @hairyairey
      @hairyairey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miski1969 yes I have noticed this with road events running with the traffic, then the marshalls will shout at you to follow the highway code! Which says the opposite. In my experience it seems that England Athletics treats the roads like a giant running track so you run on the left anti-clockwise. I don't like it I do not feel at all safe. Although it also says that large groups should stick to the left!

    Great stuff it’s nice to hear a sensible take on spitting or clearing nose. When I start running my mouth fills with saliva and my nose starts running I’ve tried not to get rid and I end up looking like Ive been gunged! I’m always sure to check around me and get out of everyone’s way any ideas of how to stop that give us a shout. I’ve tried swallowing it all it makes me gag and I’ve actually been sick from swallowing so much. 👍👍👍

      If you've got to do it you've got to do it. I don't have to very often but when I do I check there's nobody in range, go to the side and aim for a drain, patch of nettles or something else no-one's going to step in.

    Music in the headphones!. Also when I see other runners I usually think "keep going" and wave. I really, like you said, don't think about what they're wearing. But sometimes when I do it's about how hot I would be in that gear. Not, "That's not the latest and hottest running kit. Poor person."

    maybe thats a swiss thing but if another runner greets you while passing you, GREET THEM BACK! 😂😂😂
    Oh and more importantly if you see somebody out of breath, sitting or even lying on the ground. Take a second and ask them if they are okay. You can take a PR the next time but a little team spirit never hurts.
    I never did this until someone passed out on the 400m track.
    If it had been in the forest I would not have seen the person a second time and who knows when the next person will run by.
