      Spoiler:
It's sort of ironic too because technically it is the Nazis that were put into concentration camps here for their 2000 years of global genocide and world domination. Not that Marley is great either, I guess you can view them as the Soviets or something.

If anyone is interested in my 2 cents on the Erwin vs Armin debate:
Erwin was being eroded from the inside out by all the guilt he felt from sending his comrades to their death for his own selfish motives. However he was unable to stop pursuing his dream, unable to stop himself from being enslaved to this dream because his dream was what he was ‘drunk on’ and not only did it give him his strong sense of purpose, it was powerful enough for him to be able to throw aside his humanity in order to keep pushing through his guilt.
During their final conversation Levi saw how tormented Erwin was as he grappled between his duty as a commander and his selfish desire to abandon the mission and go to the basement. By that point Levi had already developed an inkling that Erwin’s motives might not be as noble or righteous as he may have once thought. But it wasn’t until that very moment, that Levi truly understood just how deep Erwin’s obsession ran, how mercilessly this vice-like dream was suffocating him, and how much it was consuming him. As his long time friend and comrade, Levi saw that Erwin’s misguided motives made him someone who was pitiful rather than hateful. Even when Erwin, for the first time, showed hesitation and childish selfishness at a moment when his soldiers desperately needed him, Levi’s initial look of absolute disbelief and incredulous ‘huh?’ quickly changed to a face of genuine sympathy and commiseration. During a rare moment of vulnerability shown by an old friend who’d always been defined by his stoicism, he was beyond stunned. But nevertheless he still understood the pain of the pressure Erwin is under and how tragic his dilemma is. Levi decided to do him the favor of making the difficult decision Erwin hadn’t been able to bring himself to make. This all ties back to what Erwin told Levi in the No Regrets, OVA: when a person hesitates or allows themself to wallow in regret, they are dulling their future decisions and allowing others to make their choices for them. But in turn, Levi’s decision did also give Erwin a chance to redeem himself before death. Hence, Erwin thanking him with a face of relief, peace, and acceptance. In a sense, Levi fulfilled Erwins’ desire for judgment (often misunderstood as a desire for forgiveness. Cursory words of forgiveness can be easily given, but it is difficult to endure the punishment needed to truly earn forgiveness.) The surmised purpose of ‘judgment’, is to bestow punishment on those who commit immorality and evil. As a result, to the remorseful sinner, judgment is an object of hope that alludes to a possibility for redemption through punishment, something that Erwin not only desired, but also secretly believed he deserved.
If we want to tie in Armins’ “Those who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t change anything” philosophy: Erwin sacrificed his dream in order to change himself. He wanted to finally shed the righteous commander mask he’s been hiding behind all these years and for the last and only time, be a true commander who is truly fighting for his soldiers and humanity, not his own goals. Notice he does not parrot his usual ‘dedicate your hearts’ line. He never actually was sincerely dedicating his heart to humanity’s cause. They were empty words and he knew it. By throwing away his script and mask, he was able to finally be honest not only to his soldiers, but also to himself.
The final factor that made Levi decide to let Erwin go was when he saw that even at deaths’ door, Erwin was still obsessing over his dream, still unable, probably unwilling, to let it go and make his peace. Many misinterpret the final rooftop scene as Erwin slapping Levi’s hand away and rejecting the syringe but that definitely wasn’t what that scene was about. He subconsciously raised his hand because in his delirium, he was reliving the moment his obsession first began and reflecting on the day he asked the teacher *that* question. Surprisingly, it’s actually the first time it’s fully revealed what Erwin had even asked that day. It’s been teased again and again how he’d raised his hand in class in his childhood, presenting a very controversial question, but what that question exactly was, was never explicitly revealed to viewers until this scene. It really sits among some of the most powerful and emotional moments in this show imo.
Before leaving for the mission, Erwin himself had admitted that he had no idea what he was going to do once he fulfilled his dream of seeing the basement. Whereas Armin on the other hand was still full of dreams to be drunk on. Big dreams that have the capacity to inspire *everyone* to keep pushing forward along with him. Armin was ‘looking’ far beyond the walls, all the way to the ocean whereas Erwin’s vision was limited only up to the basement. A dream that stops at the Zhiganshina basement just simply isn’t enough to lead humanity towards the direction in which they now need to go, which is beyond the walls and forward. Erwins’ dream was a source of torment for him while Armins’ dream is a beacon of hope for everyone.
Levi understood that letting Erwin go was the greatest mercy. He would no longer need to suffer under his dream (that honestly had become more like a curse at that point), or live every day wracked with guilt, or continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of making the most difficult decisions for everyone, while still having to endure being called a devil or a demon. No matter the outcome, he’s always somehow made out to be the bad guy. If his ideas fail, he’s blamed for the results and when he succeeds he’s then criticized for the means. From the start he never had a shot at pleasing any of those people.
Someone in the comments for another video put it quite nicely - ‘If Levi had brought Erwin back, it would have been a betrayal and act of disrespect to his conviction’. For Erwin this was an incredible moment of long awaited emancipation and relief from a huge burden he’d been shouldering for most of his life. Erwin wanted to make his peace after a long struggle and even if it took a lot for him to get to that point, and even if he himself was still wavering inside, at the end of the day it was still his personal decision. Going against it would have been the same as dismissing his determination and resolve. Erwin himself already knew what the right thing to do was from the start but he just needed someone to give him that final push and affirmation that it was time to let go of his childish vice. With his wish fulfilled, he would have lived life an empty man left with nothing because he no longer has a dream to chase. Even if he had survived, it’s likely he would have never been the same commander again without that drive. On the inside, he’d just be a regular guy holding on to nothing but guilt, and guilt is a horrible and painful thing to be drunk on. As people often say, sometimes you’re happier chasing your dream than living a life where you no longer have one. You’ll continue to find this to be a heavily emphasized, central theme in this show.
Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

I love this comment because it perfectly sums up exactly how I feel about Levi’s decision to choose armin.
I think Erwin is a great character that many people misunderstand at times, to further your point when talking with Zachary after the coup he openly admits he staged the entire revolt simply because he wanted to live, more specifically in Erwin’s case he wanted to live to further his goal of seeing the basement.
I’ve seen far to many people entirely gloss over the fact that Erwin’s drive is to prove his/fathers theory right and admits he doesn’t know what he’s going to do once he’s achieved it. So many videos/discussions had about “what if Levi chooses Erwin” yet not a single one ever has Erwin lose his drive after the basement. It’s always been proof to me that they missed the point in Erwin’s character and Levi’s choice.
The finale also perfectly summed it, Levi chooses armin because he “had that same look in his eye” ie he had dreams too but as you mentioned most of the them went past the walls and titans entirely. That’s why Levi doesn’t regret his choice.

@@MrJayza89 100% agree. I think a lot of people gloss it over because very understandably, they want to keep their image of the heroic leader Erwin maintained for most of the show. Cuz let’s be honest it’s one of the most charismatic and badass aspects to his character. But as you said, people forget that the root of that charisma, passion, and drive, inherently comes from a place of personal motive and juvenile selfishness. It’s his biggest character flaw and at the same time also what makes him such a complex, nuanced and incredibly written character. Definitely somewhere in my top 3 characters!

@@MrJayza89 I've seen some argue that Erwin would just look for some other purpose after the basement, but that's just not what the writing wants to tell you. They quoted specifically Kenny's line there again for that reason. Erwin's drive was the basement, because of his father. That's what he was a slave of, while Armin on the other hand already looked far outside the walls for his future and purpose. That's also what Levi knew from listening in on them (which imo ties in well with his OVA, even if not official, as the three probably remind him of his own friend group back then).
Yes, IRL Erwin might've found more purpose beyond the basement if he saw its revelations. But for the story his dream ended there, so it made most sense for Levi to entrust the second chance of the spinal fluid to someone who already had larger scoped dreams than Erwin.
I think people just chose out of emotion for liking Erwin more, rather than an objective view on the storytelling and view of the characters.

My fave line in the whole series "But I forgot that dream long ago! Avenging my mum, killing the titans, the only thoughts in my head are full of hate! But Armin's not like that! He cares about more than just fighting! He has dreams!" Yuki Kaji does such an incredible job in this episode.

Eren's voice actor is top through each season, I think he doesn't get enough credit how much passion and emotion he puts in to flesh out Eren's character through his voice acting. He is amazing.

NOT A SPOILER, just wanna clear it up a lil bit
Isayama (the writer of Attack on Titan) said in an interview: 'People tend to say, "True happiness is when you don't fulfill your dream." This indicates that for a person, "continuing the pursuit of a dream even during the last seconds" is the best kind of life. I kept thinking about this notion as I drew Erwin's final moments."
This combined with Kenny's quote "Everyone has to be drunk on something" tells us why Erwin died and not Armin. Erwin's dream was to find out what's in the basement, that's what he's "drunk on". What happens after he gets there? His dream is gone, fulfilled. Nothing to be "drunk on" anymore, nothing to drive him. Armin's dream, however, is driven by curiosity. Even after he finds the sea, he'll still be curious about other things. He'll still be "drunk on his curiosity and he'll keep driving forward, where Erwin may have lost his motivation.
The adage which Isayama describes is the final part of Levi's decision. Erwin's entire life was driven by his dream. He died fighting for it. Bringing him back would enter him into the same hell, but without a dream to fight for. Hence why it was time to finally let him rest.

This also explains why they included the part where Levi asks what Erwin is going to do after they get to the basement and Erwin says he hasn't thought past it. Knowing Isayama, King of Foreshadowing, it wouldn't surprise me if this were all true.

the show is very German-inspired with the songs and intros sung in German, and the whole concept of the walls is from a place from Germany and Erens "mission" at the end. The whole map of reiners place and eren is upside down Africa where eren lives in Madagascar and in WW2 the Austrian painter planned to send all the jews in Madagascar.

Do you realize that eps 18 had no music at all until the very last scene when the scout help Armin get out from his titan form?
The episode such a emotionally powerful they want us to focus on the dialog to hear what every person has to say.
I think that's why you guys are silent too.
Bertholdt scene actually sad, I get some people find it satisfying but he desperately call out for his friends (jean, eren, mikasa, cony) to help him even though he wanted to kill them before and at the very last moment he just called out for Annie and Reiner, his comrades.

I mean what talent does erwin have? Beautiful speeches??? LOL. he only survives in every fight or war thas he's been through, not win. All of his plans were pointless, he sacrificed his life together with the new scouts for levi to kill the beast and then failed. He failed to capture the female titan with all of those restraint he planned in the middle of the forest. All he did up to this point was survive and not win wars. He's so hyped up its so annoying.

Erwin's talent seems to me to be to be able to see things through to the end and convince others to back him in his dream. Much like Kenny did with less talent. There's no reason to think Erwin is psychic. He had great plans that failed at times only due to things he couldn't have possibly foreseen, like Annie calling for dumb titans to eat her and be able to do that. He did indeed win many battles and bring humanity to the point it could afford choices like whether to back Eren and whether to keep exploring in the face of the opposition of the Reiss.
