This hand towel once told me INTO THE WOODS was about AIDS. haha. And now he's in charge of casting!

hahahaha, yeah into the woods is NOT an aids musical. Even Paul Ford, the Pianist/ for the show (among many other MT and Sondheim credits) who's husband sadly actually had aids, and died of it years later, has said it's NOT an aids musical. If anyone tells you otherwise they're completely wrong. Just because something is happening during a time of crisis, doesn't make it about that crisis.

So, It's not enough to be good and impressive at the audition, that my artistic talent/value requires "social media presence" to be validated and accepted/acceptable?
    For goodness' sake!

To be honest be popular on TH-cam and you will not need Broadway, they will chase you. And it's not just Broadway , it's everywhere today

I concur…my resume and my talent in the room should be the primary source. It sounds like a vetting process, which considering how many people they see, it makes sense,

The issue I have regarding song choice and type is that I never feel comfortable picking a song that best represents me, as well as what best represents the character I'm auditioning for. If I'm auditioning for Sweeney Todd, I'm not going to sing Billy Joel or some upbeat musical number. I need to find a song that best represents the soul of Benjamin Barker. And sometimes when focusing more on the character, it wont showcase the best of "you". Which puzzles me on what is more important. I dont want the director to assume because I am young/old, and sing a song that showcases my range and acting skill, that I can only do that "type" based on a 30-90 second audition.

Let the time you're not trying for the character, like when you're talking to the casting director or whoever, let your actual self shine and when you sing let them show that you can play a part similar to what they're auditioning for. That's what I'm thinking would be best for you

This guy seems like a jerk. Low key. It seems he’s looking for people to check certain boxes If I had his job I’d be more interested in, and encourage people to, blow me out of the water. I’d never tell an actor to only show up in a room with their ‘type’. If you’re a dude who can sing crazy high notes like Alex Newell or Billy Porter, come show me. Show me what you’re good at. It’s my job to make sure you match the show.

This video wouldn’t be very useful if he simply came out and said “i don’t care what kind of impression you make, just come out and sing some crazy high notes/impress me”. He’s giving people detailed ways that they can make a good impression besides just being talented.

Matt Miller exactly. Presenting yourself as “hireable” (on time, prepared, clean, ready to go) is standard for any interview. But no other job will want to know how engaged on social media with your “fans” you are. Actors shouldn’t be seen as free marketing you’re expected to do. But on some level I do think there’s a benefit for understanding the Broadway business as it stands. It really really sucks, but if you look a certain way, you’re going to be excluded from certain jobs. (And it goes for both fat and skinny and all races) you can’t be naive. But that shouldn’t put you in a box. Come as you are.
