One of those spots where you actually have to walk a bit to get there.
Outside of NY State, and even in Modern NY State (particularly in NYC) the Erie Canal isn't much appreciated. Oh so many years ago, even in NYC we were taught how it opened up the Midwest, and made NY the "Empire State". The growth of NYC and its place in the world financial market, replacing Philadelphia and Boston as THE US cities is attributable to the fact that the passage of cargo from the canal came to NYC

Fun fact: if you put your kayak in at Pittsford Crew dock and turn here and go back, it’s almost exactly 10 miles. I owned the Strava segment for the return trip for several years until a rower took it from me.
