    This is the best art advice ever -- thank you, Kendyll!

    Yeah this makes a lot of sense!! In my personal experience thats related to enjoying the process, I’ve been trying to make art for a niche instead of working in a flow of what I feel like making at any given time, illustrations made with inspired action and now that I’ve been more open to making art that just feels good to make, more work for that original niche that I was working toward has been showing up organically as a result of going with the flow and making more art in general... if that makes sense! because I’m not trying to design, I feel more relaxed and more creative and as a result just have a much greater output. Just hoping this is helpful for someone. Thanks for sharing, really enjoy your videos!! And your beautiful colored pencil work!

    I love this so much. I love the look of oil paintings but I don't love that process. I love making things that I love to make, even if it doesn't match the artists that I love to follow. Excellent advice, Kendyll!

    Sweet advice for beginners and a thoughtful reminder for those who have been at ART for a while! We can get over focused as we mature and our art journey can become stagnated if we are not trying to grow and learn! Remembering to create what you love to see, love to have, love to give.
    Thank you.

    That’s why I initially avoided realism, as the process wasn’t fun for me... but now that I’ve spent years on the foundations (colour theory, drawing, composition etc) I think I can dabble in realism without feeling overwhelmed

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ahh, we're twins there! I didn't want to have anything to do with realism initially either -- seemed so tedious. I describe myself as an accidental realist because I only got into it gradually. Now I love it!

      Kendyll Hillegas wow!! That’s sooooo inspiring 😮 I thought you were born with realism in your blood .. I love your fruit illustrations! Drawing food is really one of my favourites

    • @KendyllHillegas

      No, not at all! I was always drawn to a really painterly vibe when I was really young, and then in college I veered more towards installation and non-figurate work. After I came back to art, all I wanted to do was have fun (which allowed me to focus on the process for the first time in forever). The realism and the love for it grew gradually over time. I should share some old work again soon. It's very stylized and not realistic at all. And thank you for the kind words!!

    Very encouraging video! I recently retired from local government to pick up my paint brush and colored pencils full time. I painted watercolors 30 years ago, and I want to get back into it full time. I'm 51 and this video helps me realize that I can enjoy the process of painting what I like...which is flower painting! Thanks for the encouragement!

    Great post and message - thank you for this :-)- I’m a mom of teenagers. I believe your ac sound can be scaled down- if you’re using Premiere then Essential Sound>Dialogue > Repair > Reduce noise- can’t totally eliminate it but you can scaled it down since the ac is at a constant level. Cheers

    Thank you for this. Just this week I started going back to the roots and learning how to properly draw, even though I've been drawing for decades. I love doing character design, it's what I enjoy most. I just want to understand it more and draw faster. However I can also appreciate the popular advice, since I also want to make more of what I don't see in the world

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! Absolutely -- I totally agree that the popular advice has its time and place, but I think it's distracting for many beginners, or even experienced folks who are beginning again. Basically, I think the foundation is a deep love of the process, and that ultimately will free you up to make more of the kind of work you want to see in the world! 💕 And that's amazing that you're getting more into character design again. Go you!☺️

      @KendyllHillegas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! It's always surprising to me how counterintuitive it is to get the hang of. I think it's because we can be so focused on the product and really sincerely wanting to make "the thing" that it hides the fact that that desire isn't necessarily the same thing as true passion/love for what you're doing. And I'm glad you found it too!☺️ Mira is the best.💞💞💞

    My mother was an artist in oils for decades, and her advice to me was to always what I wanted to draw, not what the "experts" of the day said was the acceptable thing to produce.
    While I've deliberately never made my art into a business---my feeling is that the moment I do that, all the joy will be gone because the consumers/buyers would want me to draw what they want (much of which we in my faith absolutely will not participate in), and there would be all kinds of government rules and regulations, plus deadlines to meet---so I continue to draw what I enjoy so very much (abstract art and optical illusions). Those who see my work like it a lot, for the most part, and those who don't like it...no problem, we all have different tastes, and there's a lot of art out there that I don't like, too.
    My art is my joy, and now that I'm retired, and I have a lot of time to do the things I love doing, I find that Bible study, drawing, classical music, and being with my faith brethren are all that I need to have a happy life in my sexagenarian years.

    Kendyll, I’m loving your videos.
    I do have a question, or area of interest, that I don’t think I’ve ever seen addressed.
    My style is not realism... my style is more abstract/Zentangle/mandala/patterns/etc. I have a fairly good grasp of colour theory (for no official training) and understand working with complimentary/split complimentary/ tetradic etc colour schemes, and can use these for mood, focus, contrast etc. What I continually keep hoping to hear if there is a general consensus or “rule” on, is the proportions within these colour schemes. So for instance, I’m working with a Triadic colour scheme of green, purple & orange.... is there any ratios of these colours one would aim for?
    Further, I’ve picked similar saturations/shades of these colours as my base colour scheme, but I need a wide range of tones and shades to depict 3D, I assume the original shade chosen forms the mid tone shade within the composition and I introduce and tints, shades and tones as necessary?
    I really enjoy your video style

    I would like to know your advice on whether or not to work at drawing something I’m not good at or stick to drawing what I love. I love and am better at drawing anything but people. As an illustrator, should I take it as a challenge and work hard to better my figure drawing? Or should I just avoid that type of work? Focus on our strengths or try to expand our subject matter?

    Thanks Kendyll, thanks for this. I don’t think I could paint unless I wasn’t enjoying the process. Otherwise it would be too much work and I’d then over think it. My Instagram Art page is called Birhira and have been back into painting for the last 5yrs. After a decade of not doing it, there’s nothing else that could replace my love of art. I tried.. Thanks Bernadette from NZ!

    Thank you for this. I think we as young artist forget to make art we enjoy because we're so focused on trying to build a platform for ourselves.

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally! I was the same. Although for me I was less focused on the platform and more focused on the kind of art I wanted to make. Platforms and product are all fine goals, but it gets tricky when they're the first goal! For me, the first goal always has to be process and everything else will grow out of love for that!💕
