Great information Neal. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Sarah. Always look forward to your videos. This video provides further affirmation of what my planning has revolved around and what my mindset is regarding retirement. The icing on the cake is ACTUALLY SEEING you and Sarah DOING IT!
I have come to realize that my retirement in the US would be ‘okay’ - but, I also realize that it could be much better elsewhere. The cost of living in the US is just so high that it forces me to question the ‘value’ of remaining here.
As you and Sarah outline the merits of geoarbitrage, I am reminded of how I have always realized that (within my own country), where I live (Houston, TX) has always offered about the best ‘bang for the buck’ that you can get in the US. So, where does that leave me when realizing that my retirement can cover my expenses and a little more? It leaves me looking to competitively shop - as I would if I were making any major purchase such as appliances, TV, cars, etc.
Retirement is a major ‘purchase’. Where you choose to ‘spend’ it can have a great impact on how good ‘it’ is to/for you.
I have a good friend who decided to move to Spain for this very reason; he and his wife haven’t looked back - 2 years into it and they wonder why they didn’t do it years earlier.
Thanks again for your consistently great content Neal and Sarah!

Really interesting comment here. What a great concept "buying a retirement" as a big ticket purchase. Wow.... I love the way you have looked at that. We have had so many interesting comments already on this video, fuelling ideas for future videos. This is one of the best I have heard for a long time.
      Really appreciate it.

You guys help me so much. Coming to the point of pulling the trigger. Our first 3 years we will be traveling 6 months out of the year with a 24k budget. My 85 year old mother lives in our home, so that's what's stopping us from selling everything. Of course if she has an event that she cannot be sline in our house, then we sell thr house sooner. Thank you for sharing uour life and experience.

My husband and I are new to your channel and LOVE the information you share. On top of that, the transparency and humor is top notch! Since we're new, we're just trying to catch up. "Just made it" to Athens. :) However, "we" watched all of your minimalism and early retirement playlists. After 30 years of teaching, I have a pension and saved up enough money so my younger husband could retire with me. We want to travel abroad. Our research started 2 years ago. We're close to choosing our flights. Thank you for leading the way!

Hi Guys. Enjoying your channel, especially the honesty. Sorry to hear about your bereavement and having to return to the UK. Glad to see you are back on the road again. We did one year and had to come back to care for my mum. We thought it would be a few months but it turned into 4 year full time carer; sadly she died in January this year. Judith had taken a sabbatical year so had to go back to work or quit. So back to work it was. I retired 5 years ago and would love to get going again. Judith is sadly 15 years away from her pension. Looking forwarded to working my way through the rest of your videos in this topic 🤗

Thanks for a really good video. I am always skeptical of these one-size-fits-all formulas. Everyone is different and every situation is unique. While the 4% rule might provide a very rough estimate, it is ultimately up to each couple to determine what works best for them. Erin handles all of our longer term financial planning. I just told her that I would work until she tells me to stop. That seems to work for us.

Once you are on Social Security and/or drawing a pension you need to calculate what I am calling my "Annuity Shortfall." This is the amount of my expenses that exceeds my annuity income. The annuity shortfall can only be drawn from savings (unless you have some earned income still from some activity you enjoy.) This is the amount that you need to apply the 4% rule to and is a much easier nut to crack after collecting social security than before.

the 4% rule made us feel more confident that we're ready for early retirement but I agree with you, its flawed, especially this year where we're set to loose £20k for this year with our investments if we take our yearly drawdown. hence, were not withdrawing anything from our drawdown and source our living expenses from other sources. please don't stop sharing tips on how to plan your trips and how you fund it.

Loved meeting all of your friends 😜. Great way to explain the 4% rule! We work with a financial advisor who has been more bullish on our % withdrawal for retirement since Social Security will positively impact our cash flow (when we qualify). I hope Sarah gets well quickly. Your money advice is sound and like you said your living like an adult. It is so often the case that people get a bit of extra money and buy useless crap that ends up breaking. You also have to think out of the box and look around in the area you are in that has free entertainment. This summer my husband and I along with our grandson are having a blast, we look on line or in our local papers to find festivals and carnivals that are free. Now as it comes to food you gotta eat anyway lol so eat eat at local family oriented restaurants, and when your at a carnival I suggest you try funnel cakes!! So far this summer we have been to 5 free music concerts, watched a play put on for free (or for a small donation which we did give ) went to a bunch of church carnivals including our church A rib festival which was divine I love BBQ ribs!!! Adding it all up including gas we spent around $150.00 that isn't bad for what the three of us did!! So if you happen to come back to the states. go on the cities web sight and look for things to do you will find an almost free and fun day. Which will stretch your budget!!! Happy safe traveling!!!

So yes, this video is very relevant. Do not assume the market or your salary will increase at all annually. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Thanks for the video.

Each week I look forward to your videos. Great one man show Neil! I did miss seeing Sarah and I hope she feels better soon. You should do a segment on being sick without a home.
I spent my life focused on saving and was able to retire right before I turned 53 with a small gvt pension. I won't be able to access my 401K until I'm 59.5 but at 60 I'll get another pension, and these will grow and last until I die. At 70 I'll take my social security.
I started feeling the pinch of inflation this year. I won't be able to fully leverage geo arbitrage until I'm no longer responsible for my senior cat. My passion is yoga and it's great to have a side gig that I love that provides extra income.
After spending my career focused on saving, I realize I'm going to have to figure out the best way to deal with taxes because eventually I'll have to take required minimum distributions and I'll have set streams of income from three different sources (gvt pension, military pension, and social security) that will continue to grow. It's a good problem to have but I wish I didn't have to wait until almost 60 to access my 401K without a penalty.
Impressive how you can tackle such a weighty topic in a short video and explain the 4% rule in less than 60 seconds. I loved your characters in your skits. Bravo!

What a great video, you guys are switched on and fun too, love it. Personally I have taken a different view on planning for retirement. I have worked out what I would like to spend each year on travel £xk and also what I want to achieve as liquid income minus expenses. So I am driving my expenses down as far as I can and then working out what I need each month to give me that liquid income minus expenses. Increase expenses with inflation for each year, and increase pot of money inline with inflation. When I do that I can achieve a comfortable income for us both as I map it out to 90 years old with the pot of cash I have and with state pensions mapped in too. It blows the 4% out of the water for me as it's based on what we believe will be a comfortable liquid income for us. So for example, with bills paid, what would be a good liquid income for you?... £100 per week, £200, £300 ? everyone will be different... BTW, hope Sarah recovers soon, my best wishes.

Very interesting and informative content Yes the 4%rule has had its day based on my experience
As I've looked at it and luckily not had to use it !!!The rule doesn't seem to have any "wiggle room "in the even of a market "adjustment "well let's use no financial speak FALL !!
AS I see it if you keep pulling 4% from a vastly diminished pot your initial projected draw down period will have to be drastically reduced or the 4%rule may have to have become the 2%rule or zero rule ! Those options in the greatest number of cases are totally impracticable.

I read the 'guardrails' article. I find it is more simply stated: reduce your withdrawal rate below 4% if the value of your portfolio drops i.e. falls behind inflation. Be vigilant for the first 10 years and track it, year in, year out. It seems to me this is a function of asset returns against inflation. What if a person's portfolio grows faster than inflation+4% ? What if an individual has $2m and only needs income of $75k? Thanks.

The key to it all is to remember that we are not robots and that is what a rule of thumb like the 4% rule assumes. As you grow older then you flex your plan through studying and maintaining strong budget forecasts. Sounds like you are thinking absolutely in the right way on this. Think you will find the video coming out the Saturday pretty interesting too.

Overall, an informative & entertaining video. I prefer the Guyton method, or at least a variation of it that I use. The biggest problemI have with the 4% rule isn’t really addressed here. What isn’t taken into account is that generally, people don’t need the same amount of money at different stages of their lives. Simply put, a 65 year old spends more than a 75 year old, who spends more than an 85 year old, who spends more than a 95 year old. Many financial planners fail to account for this in their advice, yet it’s been proven. People need to adjust their spending plans each year due to market gains or decreases, inflation, other changes in income, and their age. I have no problem using the 4% rule as a guideline, but that’s all it is.

  • @MagentaOtterTravels

Hi guys! It’s taking me a long time to make this,, so hopefully Sara is right as rain by now!👍
Here are my issues with the 4% rule and your examples:
    - annual living expenses are one thing, but often people get into their 80s or 90s and then need substantially more money than that because of long-term care needs. That’s my paranoia!
    - your annual allowances in your examples seem very low! I’m thinking viewers of your channel like me, plan to do foreign travel and have some fun. I don’t see how on earth I would do that on $25 to 30K a year! 😳
    - I think we should all assume we will live until we are 95. If we die sooner than that, our beneficiaries get some money 😉
    Those are my thoughts!
Thanks for another excellent video! I love talking about retirement planning 💕
    Cheers! Dara
P.S. We are different than you because Ian and I live in the US part of the year and the UK part of the year. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
It is very interesting how much our living expenses and our lifestyle differs in those two parts of the year! 😉
For us, it’s a good practice for retirement! At this point, we are only semi retired. Which means we are fully retired until work comes our way 😂

and what happens if the markets drop 30+%.... gotta make that clear to people.... investments don't always go up. People need to be prepared to pay themselves LESS each year, despite higher prices.. if necessary!

In the vein of Alfred P. DOOLITTLE, Neil, you have absolutely ruined me! I discovered your videos a few days ago, and this one just two days ago. I have been pouring over my numbers and running multiple scenarios. I promised my wife I would wait to 59.5, (we are the same age, you and I) but now I can’t concentrate at work because using Guyton’s guardrails I should be more than able to retire. My co-workers are cross with you as well, not wanting me to leave, but it is all I can think about. And now you have let the cat out of the bag, opened your Pandora’s box. Think of all the havoc you are causing. Seriously though, if you ever find yourself in Mayberry, home of Andy Griffith, give me a shout, beers are on me, APPARENTLY I can afford it!

And you know.... that man decided, out of all the seats to choose, to sit right next to me and was getting very annoyed at me talking to a camera even though I apologised and offered to move. Well that's life eh.

Neal, given that you recently had Covid, I don’t think your lungs really wanted you to do that interview sequence with all of the running back-and-forth to either side of the table!

4% rule works if you begin your retirement after the age of 70 AND you don’t plan to withdraw more than 4% no matter what the inflation will be

  • @DogWalkerBill

Or you have the IRS come along and forces you to make minimum withdrawals from your 401(k) or get a tax penalty! Because Big Government Knows Best!

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Working out a good tax strategy is also critical to a good retirement plan, I agree.

My accountant said the current FU number for a single person is $2M due to skyrocketing inflation.

      Hey John!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! There are a lot of factors other than inflation that impact what the FI number will be, looking at your own costs is the first step.

It doesn't work. We will only pull funds down when things are up and there will be years where investments are up 15, 20, 30+ % Far exceeding any loses in a couple bad years. So have years of cash to ride out downturns and then pull some gains in major up years to back fill that cash bucket. Yes, whaaaaaaa. you may pay a little more in taxes, it isn't going to make a difference. Stress testing that plan for us has proven that in NO time from 1929 to 2021 would we have run out of money but instead would have more money than we know what to do with in the end. Some years we would be pulling 10 to 15% down, other years none, still other years 5%, whatever works to keep that buffer for bad times.

I'd love that drink - so cheap! $825k not hundreds! It's flawed cos we don't know when the end is near...just live for the now! Geo arbitrage and Int'l housesitting. I'm building a 10% savings from my retirement income so that it creates automatic future-proofing against future years' inflationary costs. Simply reduce your COL and create a line item of 10%.

  • @Cingearth

The 4 % rule is not flawed ! You just need lots of money to get 4 % from your investment !

      Hey Cing!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Well if you had $100 Million and continued to take 4% with Inflation increases you absolutely can be out of cash after 30 years. So indeed... it can be flawed if you don't take real control of your own plan.

How do you figure you can count on 4% these days for anything?
You have zero guarantees. Take back our country or suffer the consequences. Where am I wrong?

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Sadly she isn't interested in meeting others at the moment, she spends most of her time completing retirement 4% calculations and that is taking all her time sadly.
