      I forgot about that! I didn't want the butterfly to be chopped up by the fan. Also, they wear themselves out trying to fly through the plastic to escape. It's not unusual to relocate 2 or 3 a day during the summer.

    I appreciate the knowledge and respect for living creatures in these videos, Charles, so a very humble, enthusiastic thank you, and I think you do a great job! I would have loved to see the new breeding groups of Sailfins being placed into their new homes - the barrels or ponds? And I'd love to see another video when you harvest the two Sailfin colonies... Anyway, thanks so much for these videos! I sure appreciate your work.

      We currently house all of our fish in barrels and vats in the greenhouses. In the past I have used outdoor raceways for summertime breeding (tropical fish outdoor growing period here is at least nine months). We are planning to make some raceways in the next few weeks. Some of the fish will be transferred to them.
      In future videos I'll show us setting the fish up for breeding.

    In your example (1:34) of breeding Simpson heterozygous high fins, I believe you wanted to say that 50% would be high fin (heterozygous) 25% would be low fin (homozygous recessive) and 25% would be homozygous dominant or lethal. This is the famous heterozygous cross, except in this example it is the homozygous dominant that suffers. In most classroom examples it is the homozygous recessive that gets the short end of the stick.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    • @ezrahn
      @ezrahn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but false. The problem is that you cannot really count the dominant ones because they aren't even born. So the end result is more like 2/3 high fins, and 1/3 low fins.

    • @Cgraseck
      @Cgraseck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ezrahn Yup. This is why actual genetic experimentation is so difficult. Figuring out that the homozygous dominant is lethal takes a lot of work. I just wanted to point out that it was not 75%, which I'm sure Charles knows.

      @goliadfarms7029  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hate watching my own videos, so I refuse to go back and check this.
      Yes, due to the homozygous lethal, the expected ratio of hifin to normal when mating hifin to hifin would be 2:1.
      But, with the true breeding hifin gene a heterozygous hifin to heterozygous hifin would yield the typical 3:1 hifin to normal. And a homozygous hifin to normal would yield 100% hifin.

    Genetics are so interesting but it can be so difficult to follow, the high fin that is homozygous lethal is actually somewhat similar to the gene for sickle cell disorder, heterozygous for sickle cell helps to fight off malaria but when homozygous it causes a lot of health issues such as anemia. the sickle cell gene originated in Africa where malaria is so prevalent that the gene stuck around despite the potential for health problems. I'm sure there are also other examples but i cant think of any off the top of my head.

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sickle cell anemia is a good human example, although it isn't as lethal as hifin in xiphophorines wherein hifin homozygotes don't make it to birth. Sickle cell homozygotes often survive to puberty, but rarely beyond. With sickle cell in malarial regions, the heterozygotes are superior to either homozygotes. It would be interesting if someday a translocation would place the two alleles on the same chromosome so that anyone inheriting that chromosome would be resistant to malaria but would not pass on sickle cell anemia.

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The complete lack of fry wouldn't be explained by this. A few years ago I paid an exorbitant price for some red-eyed red hifin swords. They weren't cauliflowers, but were spectacular. They produced zero fry. I suspect they had been treated with sub-lethal doses of arsenic, which can sterilize fish. An alternative treatment that can cause sterility is high doses of acriflavine.

    The high fin lethal breeding?

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the standard hifin allele in Xiphophorus species is a dominant homozygous lethal. As a result, when mating two hifins together you'll yield 2/3 hifins instead of the expected 3/4 hifins. It also means that all hifins are heterozygous. The exception is what I call "true-breeding hifin" which is not lethal. In strains with that characteristic you can yield 100% hifins after weeding out the recessive normal dorsal from the population. This characteristic has been reported by two other breeders.

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I don't know if I stated that wrong in the video and refuse to watch it to see. When mating two hifins, you'd expect 2:1 hifins to normals. Unless, of course, you were dealing with the true-breeding hifin gene.

    Hello, would this be the same for all fin variations? Like Longfin in some plecos? Expect 75% Longfin and 25% short fin? Thank you

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would depend on whether the parents are heterozygous or homozygous for longfin. So far as I know, longfin (a dominant allele [version of a gene]) is not homozygous lethal in Ancistrus. That means a longfin fish can be homozygous. Here are the possible matings and expect outcomes.
      Both parents are homozygous for longfin. 100% longfin offspring.
      One parent is homozygous longfin, the other is normal fins. 100% longfin offspring.
      Both parents are heterozygous. 75% longfins, 25% normals.
      One parent is heterozygous longfin, the other normal. 50% longfins, 50% normal.

      Platys are a bit more tolerant than most mollies to water conditions, especially ammonia and nitrite. Platys can handle lower water temperatures than all mollies except for Poecilia latipinna and its hybrids. P. latipinna is the sailfin molly native to the US and is very cold tolerant. Under aquarium conditions both are easy to raise. Mollies have larger fry and are less cannibalistic than platys and their relatives swordtails.

    I love your style dude. I have been a groundskeeper for 10+ years and the type of stewardship you exhibit only comes from being deeply connected with your property.

      Thank you. This land has been in my family since 1870. The house Susie and I live in was built by my great grandfather in 1908. There isn't a square foot of it I haven't trod at some point. I've lived elsewhere, but always knew I'd return here and did in 2000.

      Last night I went out to check the greenhouses and found two pairs of Texas Toads mating after our recent rains. I briefly thought of videoing them, but wasn't sure that would meet community standards.
