Up until recently, I'd thought it was a bit silly that the cannon from a WWII battleship could take out a Metal Gear Ray drone. Then I started brushing up on my naval history. Those things are 16 inch guns. The shells they fire are 2700 lbs. The muzzle velocity is 2500 ft/s (which I had to convert to 762 m/s, and then to Mach 2.22 in order to parse, because that's such an absurd number.) Honestly, I now consider the effect of that shot to be rather understated - the kinetic energy alone is probably enough to send Ray flying faster than that. And, uh...I know modern grenade launchers have a thing that prevents them from going off if they get shot into a target at point blank range...but I'm pretty sure the shells in those cannons would just go off, because that kind of thing is pretty sophisticated for WWII tech, and it's also the main gun of a battleship, not some infantryman's underslung grenade launcher, that gun isn't going off by accident, so I'm pretty sure you'd also have a massive explosion in there too. (Well, unless they had an AP round; if they had it loaded with the kind of round designed for shooting other battleships instead of for picking off enemy destroyers, I don't think Ray would be so much knocked back as have a gigantic hole torn through it.) Seriously, these guns are *terrifying monstrosities* in terms of raw energy output. Oh, also, those numbers are per gun. Iowa class ships like that have them set up in groups of three, and I would not expect them to hold back and only fire one of them when there's a metal gear standing on the bow. And if that;s not enough, there's 2 forward facing turrets, so theoretically they could have shot SIX of these rounds into that thing. Yeah, no, these guns are just ridiculous. Even the accounts of what 14-inch guns do on shore bombardment are wild, and the extra 2 inches makes a huge difference in output. (And if, after reading this, you're wondering why battleships are considered obsolete, its because they're very big, expensive, slow targets for weapons that are far smaller, faster and longer ranged than even the biggest big gun you can put on one.)
Can I just thank you for not only sharing that information, but also going through the effort to put it in perspective AND explain the reasoning behind it? You did not need to go so in depth for a GDQ comment but I feel like I'm better off because you did
AP shells of battleship generally had a large amount of HE filler as well. Other battleships are large and well armoured, so just cutting a few holes in them would usually result in doing little to no damage. Battleship AP shells had a fuse that was armed when it encountered something along the lines of over 20 cm of armour. This amount of armour usually meant a big ship getting hit near its center. The AP shell would then explode to deal as much damage as possible without passing through. This usually causes some confusion in games, where players think AP is used for things you can easily penetrate and HE for things that are difficult for your guns to penetrate. There is a very famous battle, the battle of Samar, where Battleship Yamato was firing AP at what it thought were cruisers and fleet carriers. Those were actually destroyers and support/escort carriers, both with no armour. The AP that hit those DDs and CVEs went through and through, dealling no real damage to the ships (still killing many and causing mayhem onboard, but not enough to bother the ship itself).
That moment where I feel like I'm in a simulation because I went to go watch last year's ratatouille run and decide to check out this run right after and 11:30 in they mention "Yes Chef"
One of the more charismatic gamers in the MGS community, great to see him get the big stage. Watched it live while working. Gotta love how he makes even the tedious sections entertaining!
As a kid it took me two years and three days to beat the game on The Boss Extreme difficulty: three days to beat the rest of the game, and two years to get through that first room of Outer Haven. For some deep lore, the reason why there's a 'backup' for if you don't have a SIXAXIS is not actually a backup per se: the original DUALSHOCK3 didn't have gyro functionality, and the original SIXAXIS didn't have rumble, so there had to be options for each of them. Later revisions gave you a controller that had both of those functions (still called a DUALSHOCK3), but Mantis has different dialogue depending on if you have a SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK3 - when he asks you to set your controller down so he can demonstrate his psychokinesis, he will complain "WHAT!? No RUMBLE!?" if you have a SIXAXIS (or have vibration off), and will gloat "Rumble is BACK!" if you have a DUALSHOCK3 (or have vibration on).
God I cannot wait to someday be able to go to one of these events and just be up super early to a peak game speedrun. Im sure this sounds weird but its legit on my bucket list to go to both GDQ and ESA.
tfw im hearing ppl talk about the Wii being a retro console when mgs1 on the ps1 blew my mind as a young teen........ Great job guys, your pretty good!
I would have probably watched this at some point anyways because an MGS4 speedrun seems cool, but honestly for once the thumbnail and runner's name is what drew me in. Seems a bit unfair to the competition when you can just use Hermit Purple instead of a controller though
How does it handle it better if you don’t mind me asking? I would imagine the system would run cooler cause if better cooling. But I don’t believe it’ll give a tiny performance boost

Thanks for this speed run! I promise to have a huge donation next time someone runs any mgs from 1-5!😊
Bruh the singing to such a small crowd is true commitment and I appreciate it
where is the singing?
I've gotta watch. For me, this is the Greatest Game Of All Time.

Edit - i don't think a ration was needed because no further hits were taken
I’m sorry but the rousing rendition of Egg Eater™️ is one of the best AGDQ bits i’ve seen in a long time lol
Just replayed it after not touching it for 14 years. Still so good.
This game needs a pc port so bad. My PS3 struggles to read discs these days.
Finallyyyyyyy another MGS4 GDQ
Just under two hours is insane
Mgo2 was the best online game ever created I miss it everyday

YES YES YES YES.
*YES!!!*
holy fuck its joseph joestar
I'm waiting for a gorgonites reference after the commando elite last time
You see the joke is that this is just a casual run of MGS4, the speedrun part is that he skipped the cutscenes :^)
No! That is not Solid Snake!
If Konami doesn’t put this game in collection vol. 2 I’ll riot
The next thing you're going to say is "This is just like one of my Japanese animes!"
I keep wondering why his PS3 Didn't explode on speed run of MGS4?
Ps3 slim handled the black magic that is MGS4 way better.
