@@VerdeMorte I think those 2 had far more problems from EA executive meddling for example forcing Andromeda to use the Frostbite engine, an engine that is not friendly to RPGs, but you're not wrong.
@@VerdeMorte Actually Anthem suffered more from the release of Apex Legends, but I can't entirely blame EA, they probably just wanted to cash in on battle royale, they would never imagined they would release a good one.
My reaction upon seeing this video was "Wait, this game already came out?" That probably just says all you need to know about how this game has been treated marketing wise.
I'm starting to believe that Gamefreak has only a single animator who is thrown from task to task, project to project, having only enough time to do the bare minimum before he's needed elsewhere
The "before he's needed elsewhere" made me think of this guy as some weird superhero, stuck with a half-baked company, and simply trying to get by. *A N I M A T I O N M A N*
Game Freaks doesnt care about of animation, they excel in GamePlay(most of the time). They want you to have fun by playint, animations and story are NOT theyre greatest. Pulseman is a classic but is functuional and avarage but good. And HarmoKnight is my lil gem :3
@@sirwolfy9372 honestly if animations are not their strong point, they should stop being stubborn and hire some animators, which they're not doing. They make AAA games in Pokemon, for pete sake.
@@sirwolfy9372 This would be acceptable if they were still just dipping their toes into game development, but they aren't. Pokemon is the best selling media franchise ever, they're a second-party Nintendo developer and they easily have the money to make their games both play and look good. If indie teams of around 1-10 people can make amazing games like Hollow Knight, Undertale and Stardew Valley, Gamefreak can.
Rom hackers are already hacking SWSH it took 3 days for them to start importing models the best part they dont even look out of place(3ds models+textures) they can already edit Hit and pow of moves since the engine is the same they can most like just port the moves animation and even scripting from the 3ds in as well. The most challenging thing they need to do is to optimize SWSH for them not to lag and fixing the culling....and to fix the networking so it doesnt blast port 20367 with net discovery packets.
snintendog surprisingly, they don’t have to replace any Pokémon to add more. Usually you have to replace an existing asset, and then it’s really only cosmetic. Somehow, the game allows for new Pokémon, new rigs and animations, and maybe more if they crack the games further. It may become the BOTW of RPGs if it can be emulated or jailbreaking newer Switches becomes possible.
Game freak is weird. From an outsider point of view, they should be like AAA size, but they "refuse" to grow and remain at indie size. I feel like it hurts the development of their games (allied with little time given for development) But then again, i know nothing of game development. I say that based on the quality of their recent releases.
@Stupid Cat maybe they should lean into that? Like of the first games ordered, randomly 100 of them will have an extra game. That extra game will be easy to glitch and cracking it to find a legendary will be possible. It's like what happened with mew and what made them infamous in the first place.
They are not an indie sized company. Masuda confirmed they have a CORE staff of 200 people at GF. With an ADDITIONAL 800 STAFF for non game development related Pokemon stuff, shuffling in and out of the studio. For reference, Bethesda stayed at roughly 100 employees when making massive open worlds like Skyrim and Fallout 3.
@Kainos Teleos www.polygon.com/interviews/2019/10/24/20929597/game-freak-explains-the-1000-staff-missing-creatures-and-leek-size-of-pokemon-sword-and-shield 200 core staff. Straight from Junichi Masuda. Stop making dumbass excuses you toad. Bethesda barely had more than 100 people when they made Fallout 3 which is probably a dozen times bigger than all of Sw/Sh.
It really says something when the only review I had even seen up until this point was from you. This game was so nothing that people don't even seem to want to review it as good or bad.
I don't think it's that people don't want to review it, I think it's because legitimately few people know about it's existence. I spend an unhealthy amount of time online (do to work) and this is the first I'm hearing of it
The state of Game Freak completely baffles me. They are an incredibly small studio (only 143 employees as of April 2018) and they had to split their resources between the new Pokemon games and Little Town Hero. Both projects ended up as half-baked disappointments because of that decision, and it sounds like nobody there even wants to work on Pokemon anymore. As insanely profitable as Pokemon is, I don't understand why Game Freak just doesn't hire more people. Bring in some new talent that actually knows how to develop for HD platforms, bring in some people who actually _want_ to make Pokemon games, bring in some new PR people who don't outright lie to fans.
Right? Especially with Pokemon being such a hugely successful and popular franchise known throughout the world, it's just strange why they couldn't/wouldn't expand their team and have more people working on their projects and ultimately deliver a better product.
I kind of suspect that Game Freak doesn't even want to make pokemon games, they genuinely want to be a small indie company and create interesting new creative games, and only make pokemon games out of obligation (and because none of their other games ever sell well.) At least that would explain why they never innovate with pokemon anymore and new features rarely last more than one game and they put bare minimum effort into the graphics and animations.
I just don't understand why don't just hire new teams to work on pokemon while everyone present who are burnt out on that franchise can work on something else that they want to (and put actual passion into). They have the money (they make the HIGHEST GROSSING FRANCHISE ON THE PLANET) so the only excuse to explain this is that they're greedy and stupid.
Little Town Hero is so underwhelming that no one has even bothered to upload any porn of it on Rule34... think about that. [UPDATE: Well, it's been half a year since I've written this comment and in that time; Little Town Hero seems to have gone from having no images tagged with its name on R34 to having...! *Two...* And one of them is just an edited/alternate version of the other, so... more like one and a half.] [...] [Yeah, thanks for this _nothing_ game, GameFreak.]
I know most think this is a joke but there's basically porn of everything now a days as depressing as that sounds it has to be a miracle for something to not have any.
@@Antiformed Which to be honest, makes sense. But they should really hand the series off for even one generation. Maybe to Genius Sonority. They make GOD tier animations for pokemon. Then again, it would make GF look bad.
@@TheCrypticSyx Japanese devs sometimes get weird about letting other people make something for their IP. Game Freak are very possessive of the IP and have a bunch of stupid rules, like how you can't have Shinies in Smash Bros.
Pokemon didn't suffer because of this, it suffered because game freak thinks they can get away with everything so they don't need to spend more time and money to make a more complete game. (and it looks like it worked, sadly)
RPGs have elements of randomness by design. The thing that makes them work is that a lot of the randomness is *controllable.* No RPG should have as much uncontrolled randomness as this game.
Honestly at this point it sounds like Gamefreak needs a break at making pokemon for a while and Nintendo should do just that. Its almost impossible to make anything good while being brunt out take it from someone who was brunt out for three years its not fun and it fucking sucks that the Gamefreak company seems to be experiencing this. Plus while I love pokemon playing some of the games have become really stale from years of doing the same thing.
It's not Nintendo's decision to make. Nintendo do not own either Gamefreak or Pokémon. It's all done by the Pokémon Company, of which NIntendo only owns a 32% stake, ie, they are not the majority share holders and so don't have the power to make any decisions regarding Pokémon on their own. Heck, the games aren't even published by Nintendo in Japan. It's done by The Pokémon Company directly.
I was originally cynical towards those kind of feelings, especially with how much i love Sun and Moon, but, i find myself agreeing more and more. I just fear that it's never going to happen due to how draconian The Pokemon Company can infamously be with the IP... There have been countless types of spin-offs, but, the franchise needs freshness in its main branch now, just anything to shake it up. I personally enjoyed the more "Classic JRPG" feel of S&M, in its story presentation and pacing, but that's just not enough, and i know a lot of fans disagree heavily.
The new Pokemon games have many of the same "cheapness" issues that this game has, despite budget clearly not being an issue there. The reality is that these problems come from bad management and time constraints: both games were clearly rushed and did not have enough developers to handle everything on time.
@@Antiformed I am still sure it was time constraints and the lack of people working on the game. I have no idea where you got the info about them taking weekends off but if that is the case then it could have easily been justified if they were being over-worked which i could easily believe in this day and age :/
David Johansson you are also making assumptions just seems like your making things up cause you didn’t like how the game was it was a complete project to them and many others didn’t find it rushed
@@Antiformed I don’t know about that one chief, maybe badly managed but we won’t ever know, not a lot of other companies maintain an rpg with around 500 monsters that all need diverse and balanaced movesets/designs/abilities so it’s very hard to compare

Forcing Rotom Dex on us yet again & Streamlining the games from what they were? There are several ways GameFreak could end up screwing over Sinnoh Remakes. Could you imagine if Snowpoint Temple was just 1 room with Regigigas you need to revive with the 3 Golems? We already know we won't be able to play anything through the Game Corner in Veilstone. I expect we'll probably see the Elite 4 & Gym Leaders made easier. I fear we may lose the Vs Seeker or half the Poketch Apps if GameFreak remakes Sinnoh.

I know that you likely don't want to talk about Pokemon, that being said I think it would be interesting giving your take on Sword & Shield, at some point, considering that video you put out a few months back, talking about issues you had with the later titles in the series.
I definitely agree with your sentiment about the gear project. I think it's great that game freak is trying to prevent burnout and trying to experiment with new ideas. Their other gear project games are actually pretty good. I like pocket card jockey and harmo knight especially. Do you have any plans to go back and revisit any of the gear project games?
Honestly, this year has made me seriously question just how much GameFreak deserves their success. The more I look into it, the more I think they just got extremely lucky and were carried not by the quality of their games, but by the surrounding merchandise & multimedia empire. Also, Legend of Legaia music? I see you are a man of culture.
GameFreak was an Indie Company that Nintendo saw develop a good idea, which they then groomed into the most profitable series of all time with the anime, manga, trading cards, other merchandise, & regularly released games.
AkuTenshiiZero game freak has good ideas but absolutely no clue how to put them into practice ( heck they are some of the worst devs at programming that are successful )
hey gen 4 and 5 seem like they had heart and effort put into it with their rich postgames and a few of the best features so far like follower pokemon. After that tho, not so much it seems
Tbh if Iwata hadn't gotten involved, Pokemon probably would have died after Gen 2. He's the main reason that Gen 4 and 5 were so good, hence why after he died we got XY, SM, and now SwSh, with the slight improvements of ORAS and USUM in between.
@@ccateni28 I mean, I'll give you the upvote, if only because someone has to ;) (just messing, Sonic Forces wasn't bad; at least, not for a four hour game)
It's not that Gamefreak weren't given enough, it's that they're in a constant state of being shortstaffed and refuse to fix this problem, and that they're pretty bad at doing programming and game design in any way that could be considered efficient.
Honestly... All GF games feel like out of touch. It feels like the awkward transition that Japanese devs had going to HD during the PS3 era. The problem is that they expanded the team and have resources to fill that gap.
Japan has been behind since we switched over to 3D models. They never properly adapted asset pipelines, everything is in house or subcontracted integrated studios, rather then relying on anything from the outside like EA/Ubi/ect do. Not inherently a bad thing, small focused teams DO make really driven games, but it's clear they don't have a mastery over their craft like they might have used to.
@@Fokeno There are plenty of amazing japanese games what are you on about? Most of them much better than the shit EA and ubishit put out. The issue with the smaller studios is that they really don't earn much because they don't sell well because the west are afraid of trying new things.
People make excuses about Japanese companies all being behind, but it's really only Squeenix and Gamefreak. Contrast with modern Capcom. Or the general renaissance in JRPGs.
I don't hate that they made Town, I hate that they made it while making a Pokemon game, while hyping that Pokemon game as the one for "hardcore pokemon fans", while cutting quality from their obvious breadwinner. If they really wanted to take their team off Pokemon for a break, why not hire a third party and just make a random Pokemon game, we don't need new Pokemon every year (especially if we only get like 40-60) Genius Sonority made three fantastic Pokemon games for them (the only issue being they were sorta better than anything Gamefreak had put out at the time) so why can't that happen again? No one would be upset if another XD or Colosseum came out, only had a few hundred Pokemon, some weird gimmicks and just fantastic graphics and animations. Hell third parties should be the ones making the remakes, if Ohmori's gonna take everything Emerald introduced out of ORAS, and not even add the standard features from HGSS why bother letting him make a remake? It sounds like despite taking so many people away from Pokemon, and wasting so much on Town, that not single one of them learned any valuable lessons, sure some of them got to design cool far out their monsters, but frm the look of em, none of them will transfer to a good Pokemon design, and who cares about new designs if teh gameplay is still gonna be stale and forcefed at a toddler level?
The Pokemon Company (yes they're seperate from Game Freak) wouldn't have let them delayed Pokemon - the new game *needs* to come out to coincide with the next anime and wave of merchandise. You'll note that by this point, Game Freak have been forced to commit to yearly Pokemon releases. They're in crunch mode, and the cuts to SwSh are more understandable in this context.
@@mads_in_zero So in my looking "The Pokemon Company" is just a company comprised of people in all the other companies, meaning they just are Gamefreak. Also this new anime has zero to do with Sword in Shield, in fact I don't think the promos have shown a single pokemon even available in SwSH (besides Pikachu of course) Any crunch they are in is their own doing, because of splitting their team for Town, and NOT hiring third parties, so they arent exempt from any of this, just because they label themselves different doesnt change that TPCi is just them
@@mads_in_zero The anime and merchandise coincide with the timing of the games, not the other way around. They're designed to act as advertisements for the game after all. If the games needed more dev time, then they could have either pushed the merch/show regardless or held off and it would make no difference. Honestly they wouldn't really be making a dent in their profit margins by not releasing on their current (self-declared) schedule. In fact I think that they might have actually increased hype and merch sales with the anticipation of a game that's having so much work put into it that it had to be delayed. I wish the scheduling of side products would stop being used as an excuse for the reduced quality and rushed release of SwSh.
I agree that the anime is an advertisement for the game but the games truly exist to sell merchandise. (That's where the main profits come from.) See here. th-cam.com/video/OYU51Gebx4w/w-d-xo.html
If this game was really for ‘busy gamers’, then it should have implemented a bookmark mechanic such as the one in a good chunk of Fire Emblem games, where battles can also get super long. You go to your pause menu mid battle, save to the main menu, and pick up where you left off later. Bam. Problem solved right there.
Money isn't going into the new IPs. Money isn't going into the new Pokemon. Where is all of Game Freak's money going? The bottomless void that is the soul of a Japanese salary man?!
TMG AARON a pokemon game has like a five times smaller budget then games series like assassins creed yet makes more money on average. Sure they get none of the merchandise money but Pokémon still makes them a lot of money.
This is just more proof to me that Game Freak just doesn't know how to make good games. They got it right with Pokemon, and they iterate on it a bit, but they haven't really been able to modernize the experience in all this time and basically put the same structure in every single game. It's not awful as it is, but it could be so much better. I just don't think they're capable of more, and firmly believe almost any other company could make a better Pokemon game.
It's not necessarily that they don't know how to make good games, it's that they don't know how to make good BIG games. Thinking on a lot of Game Freaks other games (Drill Dozer, HarmoKnight, Tembo) they were all really good games that were either for handhelds or smaller scale downloable titles. It's clear that their passion and specialty is smaller scale titles, and that's why it's such a cruel irony that their most popular IP is one that explicitly goes against that. So while it's true that Pokemon is held back by Game Freak, in a way Game Freak is also being held back by Pokemon; because they have to devote all their resources just trying to keep up with thi runaway freight train of a franchise that they can't spare anything to make the kind of games they're actually good at making.
Gamefreak should either partner with more studios for bigger games, so they can only supervise or act as management for the games, while focusing their actual team into the smaller ones. Also, Gamefreak refuses to adapt, while we see other franchises breaking their formula or expanding it in different ways, every pokémon game is basically the same, and everytime they introduce a new cool mechanic, it gets obliterated in the next game. Examples of this were partner NPC's for double battles in DPPt, following pokémon in HGSS, rotation battles for BW, and now they axed Mega Evolution and Z-moves. The last one isn't necessary a bad thing (both mechanics shouldn't be combined), but I honestly believe Mega Evolution should be a staple mechanic. Anyway, the only real problem is that they insist in being a small company, and not getting on with the times. Besides, if they had kept their entire team in Pokémon, and then made Town, I'm pretty sure they would be good games, instead of two bad ones.
The whole game kinda feels like some sort of....apparatus for commentary. Breaking your opponents "Ideas" in order to use actions of your own........Sounds like a metaphor for Gamefreak and Pokemon.
An RPG of debates instead of battles? YES! WHAT can't you debate about?! You guys can't enter. "I DISAGREE!" I ain't selling you that... "I DISAGREE!" Don't bother...you can't do anything about it "I DISAGREE!" Cue Danganronpa music!
its almost like game freak made 2 half baked games with potential instead of one good game. Also I couldnt find my name in the credits and now im sad, oh well.
This could all have been avoided if Gamefreak just doubled their employee count so they could have enough spare people to cycle through to different projects as needed. But no.
Tavian Armstrong it is. Just like it’s a huge difference between raising 2 children and raising 12. The bigger the team the less that they feel will get done properly. More leaks, more bugs to fix, more costs, and all after they already doubled their team twice, once for XY and now for sword and shield. For a group used to being a tight nit set that mostly made games for japan first and got translated and bug fixed properly by someone else later, and that until Gen 5 was always set in japan, having to move on to now worldwide releases with a new standards that require tons of employees and time to make and plan has put them here It’s like being a medium fish in an extra small pond at first and getting to bigger ponds each generation. And now they are in a XXL pond
@@masteroflag You say that they will have increased problems for individual and multiple game projects, the bigger the dev team which is a flat out lie to anyone familiar with video games at all. You have teams that grew from rags to riches like CDPR while improving quality and team size while i can think of indie devs who still release bad games with a small dev team size. There are also dev teams who work on multiple projects simultaneously fluidly because of their size such as Respawn and DICE. Your argument is invalid. Bugs will exist regardless of team size. What will change is the time, passion, and budget required to make a game good. The passion is clearly not here anymore with the half assing and lying for sword and shield while the team size isn't keeping up with multiple projects. Because they have to develop for an American, Australian, and European audience as well means that they got put in a bad spot? That's correlation not causation as black and white sold as well as any other game while based on a place besides japan. Fan response, me included, consider Gen V the best in the franchise. Hell Gen IV was *also* a global release and was well received while being a good series so that argument that because they have to make for a global audience increases the workload does not work. The jump to 3d in XY lead to some degradation in quality with some new features to compensate but that stemmed from new hardware, actually diving into 3d, and experimentation which should lead to iteration but has only resulted in stagnation down the line instead of growth. You say they doubled the size of their team for sword and shield yet the game has stripped pokemon and lied about it while not even bothering to try to port some of the older gen models. The problem isn't expansion of the dev team here. The problem here is silly deadlines, lack of care, game director, or a combination of each.
[Another Commenter came up with the idea FYI]
The problem with things having potential is that... well, you can say this about basically everything there is. Everything *has* potential, so it only matters to what extent it is used.
I'm like that with everything tbh, I want to be a game designer and programmer and I see potential in everything, even in memes, but if there is something that I learn from game design in a lot of videos, is that if you don't know what the hell are you doing the potential will be as useful as a small piece of wet coal in a snowstorm.
...this game literally sounds like if mario party 9 and kingdom hearts chain of memories had a child, rejected it, and gave it to game freak. All the trappings of _both,_ and very few qualities
>Thinking Sword and Shield got the Lion's Share of Budget If it did then it DEFINITELY didn't go towards the game that can CRASH AND WIPE YOUR SWITCH'S SD CARD SAVE DATA FOR EVERY GAME.
Like between your gripes and the huge problems with SwSh I think GameFreak just...fucked up super hard across the board and didn't god damn care. But we've known even before they got "burn out" (stop making a game every fucking year you fucking idiots the demand cannot possibly be that great you island bound workaholics) GameFreak was always sort of well known as being...shit at programming? Only now it's gone from endearing and pitiable to fucking annoying because of the lack of quality control.
There are no quiet periods anymore cause they keep MAKING GAMES EVERY YEAR. USUM was released in 2017. Development on SwSh started AS SOON AS IT WAS DONE because that's how long games thake. If they just pushed back SwSh another year in order to fix it's problems and used the downtime to make Town not look like a cheap piece of crap with a good Sound Track things would be way different.
TactlessC Switch save data is on the console itself. It will delete the games but the save data is intact. It’s a structural problem with the Switch itself and certain SD cards. Smash Bros had that issue even with its massive team.
considering how fecking trash some aspects of sword/shield are, they shoulda left it to cook a while longer and focused more on this game and other gear project things. good luck to em to getting away from pokemon.

Honestly I believe GameFreak really does need to take a break from Pokémon for a bit. I’m enjoying Sword and Shield but after all the controversy surrounding it, I’m sure they could be given a break after developing a Pokémon game almost every two years for over 10 years. I’d be burnt out too if that’s the only franchise I’m given the chance to work on for a decade Perhaps get another company under Nintendo’s belt to work on a new spin off like a new Pokémon Ranger, a new Pokémon Conquest, or even Pokken 2. I just hope that in the future GameFreaks new ideas will be given a chance to shine and even be given a better budget since it does seem that they want to branch out, but due to Pokémon they aren’t being given that chance. Here’s hoping they will though!
Things to make the game better: - Battles between these bosses to train/learn the combat system would have been better. (allow refights of previous beaten bosses? Optional dungeon?) - Explanation for that sickass monster form (and use it) - If your deck is empty, require to use health/shield to refill it. Giving the player another chance for a cost. - Change names of mechanics: Izzit = Idea, Dizzit = Action, Izzit -> Dizzit = planning your next action ,etc. - More animations for actions & characters (very similair onces can share the same, but please, since when do you shear a sheep with LAVA?) - quicksaving during battle (which is deleted when loaded and doesnt affect the acual save, just so you can split that long ass fight) - choosing your battle starting position from a few selected points (sidequests to unlock?) Generally it shows GameFreaks current state, making unfinished rushed games but that game is also cursed with little to no advertisment. I just knew about it because i watched a random video a few months ago talking about "Town". Also: A MINER named AXE. (i know because pickAXE but still, i though he was a lumberjack)

What do you mean up to an hour and a half Clemps? That Final boss took more than 2 hours and a half and still induced the entire Chat with Mindbreak. And ultimately was only defeated by game deletion!
Game freak is a great example of a company that did not evolve with the times. They were fine with 2d sprite based games, they cannot do 3d. The simple fact that I can go back 20 years ago to the N64 and gamecube Pokemon games (which were licenced out to other devs) and have more frames in Pokémon animations in a single attack than the entirety of sword and shield really says something about their quality control.
I haven't even played the game and I probably never will. But just hearing you talk about the RNG makes me cranky. It just sounds like the only thing you need to beat the game is luck and patience, with no planning and minimal strategy involved.
Game freak: we don’t think kids have the attention span for challenging game. Also game freak: makes a game that is to too challenging that it would make kid want to eat their Nintendo switch. Me: they are surly trying to ditch Pokémon for a new franchise.
I usually watch these types of videos in the background while playing a game, but the editing on your channel is just really entertaining and i enjoyed watching it just as much as enjoyed hearing it. Great job and keep it up!
Oh wow, I kinda forgot about this game, I didn't even know it was out yet. "The whole game reeks of cheapness." This single quote is basically Gamefreak in a nutshell lately, and it's very disheartening. (I do like that they try to do non-Pokémon stuff every now and then tho. That's always nice, even if the attempt flops)

The really sad fact about Gamefreak right now is that they can't even be bothered to innovate their flagship series beyond, GO TO GYM, CATCH POKEMON, ELITE 4, THE END!
I think the concepts and ideas are fantastic. So GameFreak take a page out of Hideo Kojima's book where he says "our studio only focuses on one game completely until we are finished, as to put our all into our games" p.s not an exact quote but something to that effect. GameFreak should focuses SOLELY on Town Hero 2 in the future, both in passion and budget/time! They can either have another studio, like the one that made XD/Colosseum, or make fans wait like 5+ years for a main series game and give us one that is BotW levels of innovative and breathtaking!!! I believe in you GameFreak!!! For the love of Arceus, believe in yourself 💪💪😤😤
I don't think anyone is really mad about Game Freak trying out new things. But I think it really irks people that they didn't focus on a single game, rather than put out two half-baked ones.
Why does it feel like little town hero and sw/sh both suffered because of the existence of the other
My thoughts exactly.
Because they did. Bot games were lacking in potential because of the split efforts, specially Little town hero.
Just like ME:Andromeda and Anthem...
My reaction upon seeing this video was "Wait, this game already came out?"
That probably just says all you need to know about how this game has been treated marketing wise.
I didn't even realise it had a proper title yet I thought it was still just called Town but now I discover it's been out for over a month.
Mine was a usual "Wait, this isn't Pokemon!"
I said the same thing when I saw this video pop up!
Yeah, I had no clue. I thought it was something that was still in the pipeline.
Uhm... no.
It just tells me that you didn't notice the release of this game.
I'm starting to believe that Gamefreak has only a single animator who is thrown from task to task, project to project, having only enough time to do the bare minimum before he's needed elsewhere
Didn't L.A. Noire only have one animator for all the non facial captured stuff?
Formal Gibble didn’t LA Noire not have hundreds of individual species?
The "before he's needed elsewhere" made me think of this guy as some weird superhero, stuck with a half-baked company, and simply trying to get by.

I feel like it hurts the development of their games (allied with little time given for development)
But then again, i know nothing of game development.
When you have to pay 100 people and have the second most profitable franchise in the world next to Mario why share the money.

It really says something when the only review I had even seen up until this point was from you. This game was so nothing that people don't even seem to want to review it as good or bad.
I think most people didnt even know that this game was out.
I don't think it's that people don't want to review it, I think it's because legitimately few people know about it's existence. I spend an unhealthy amount of time online (do to work) and this is the first I'm hearing of it
I have not even properly heard about it untill now.
It doesn't even have r34 of it. It doesn't exist.
Because they are a small indie company, please understand.
/s if this wasnt obvious enuf.
Right? Especially with Pokemon being such a hugely successful and popular franchise known throughout the world, it's just strange why they couldn't/wouldn't expand their team and have more people working on their projects and ultimately deliver a better product.
I kind of suspect that Game Freak doesn't even want to make pokemon games, they genuinely want to be a small indie company and create interesting new creative games, and only make pokemon games out of obligation (and because none of their other games ever sell well.)
At least that would explain why they never innovate with pokemon anymore and new features rarely last more than one game and they put bare minimum effort into the graphics and animations.
They're just cheap fucks.

Its almost impossible to make anything good while being brunt out take it from someone who was brunt out for three years its not fun and it fucking sucks that the Gamefreak company seems to be experiencing this. Plus while I love pokemon playing some of the games have become really stale from years of doing the same thing.
Is genius sonority still around?
Can they? From what I heard Pokemon is owned by three sides and Game Freak is one of them.
Of course they are out of touch they've been making the same game for over 20 years they literally don't know how to make anything else

Also this new anime has zero to do with Sword in Shield, in fact I don't think the promos have shown a single pokemon even available in SwSH (besides Pikachu of course)
Any crunch they are in is their own doing, because of splitting their team for Town, and NOT hiring third parties, so they arent exempt from any of this, just because they label themselves different doesnt change that TPCi is just them
@@mads_in_zero The anime and merchandise coincide with the timing of the games, not the other way around.
@@dakotamullikin7673 Yet the anime managed to break free of what held it back with Sun and Moon being as popular as it is.

"You travel back in time to meet your dad, just before he leaves to get those cigarettes."
Yeah i believe so as well. the best they ever got trying to iterate imo was black and white 2
Pulse man was good, but that was on the fucking Genesis decades ago

Drilldozer. Also known as that one game that has an item and asssist trophy in Smash.
Actually, I think the Drill is based more on the Drill Arm from Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Assist trophy?

A milti-million dollar company needing the help of a single indie guy to carry an entire game.
Plenty of unique moves, with only a few animations? Sounds like Gamefreak to me.
Art direction wise, I like this a lot better than SnS tbh.
SnS?, MH fan per-chance?.
@@andrestewart2316 eyyyy lol yeah hahaha Currently waiting for Iceborne on steam lol and SnS is easier to type than Sw/Sh :))
Love the Dragon Quest 11 Switch plug!
...this game literally sounds like if mario party 9 and kingdom hearts chain of memories had a child, rejected it, and gave it to game freak.
All the trappings of _both,_ and very few qualities
is it just me or someone else got "3ds game with higher resolution on citra" feels???
Been waiting for this one. Something very cathartic about hearing soft-spoken reviewers go ham on a shit game (see also: MatthewMatosis)
when you started talking about the combat system all i could think of was 'just seems a bit too chain of memories really'
And even COM could work if you knew what you were doing.
>Thinking Sword and Shield got the Lion's Share of Budget
If it did then it DEFINITELY didn't go towards the game that can CRASH AND WIPE YOUR SWITCH'S SD CARD SAVE DATA FOR EVERY GAME.
>Sword and Shield must have affected its budget
So you're saying that GF simply had no money then
It must've put a dent in their *billions of dollars.*
@@_V.Va_ Small indie company, please understand
Seriously where is their money going?
Maybe they should have had Toby Fox do more than the soundtrack. That guy knows how to work on a budget.
He was working on Deltarune though
This is your of your strongest videos yet. The joke integration was more frequent than ever and the editing was really on point. Also love how even when talking about something you really didn’t enjoy you keep from sounding completely negative. You’ll 100K in no time!
Honestly I believe GameFreak really does need to take a break from Pokémon for a bit. I’m enjoying Sword and Shield but after all the controversy surrounding it, I’m sure they could be given a break after developing a Pokémon game almost every two years for over 10 years. I’d be burnt out too if that’s the only franchise I’m given the chance to work on for a decade
Perhaps get another company under Nintendo’s belt to work on a new spin off like a new Pokémon Ranger, a new Pokémon Conquest, or even Pokken 2.
I just hope that in the future GameFreaks new ideas will be given a chance to shine and even be given a better budget since it does seem that they want to branch out, but due to Pokémon they aren’t being given that chance. Here’s hoping they will though!
Is that an Aigis shirt, my guy?
*Nods, grunting approvingly*
I love of all of XIII's crazy ass terminology
Sword and shield was ruined so this game could be made.
And this game was ruined by SwSh, so is a mutual destruction.
God damn GF didnt wanna delay Sw/Sh so it could be polished and we got half the pokedex and same animations than sun/moon
A mediocre, half-baked gamefreak game? Imagine my shock.
Things to make the game better:
- Battles between these bosses to train/learn the combat system would have been better. (allow refights of previous beaten bosses? Optional dungeon?)
- Explanation for that sickass monster form (and use it)
- If your deck is empty, require to use health/shield to refill it. Giving the player another chance for a cost.
- Change names of mechanics: Izzit = Idea, Dizzit = Action, Izzit -> Dizzit = planning your next action ,etc.
- More animations for actions & characters (very similair onces can share the same, but please, since when do you shear a sheep with LAVA?)
- quicksaving during battle (which is deleted when loaded and doesnt affect the acual save, just so you can split that long ass fight)
- choosing your battle starting position from a few selected points (sidequests to unlock?)
Generally it shows GameFreaks current state, making unfinished rushed games but that game is also cursed with little to no advertisment. I just knew about it because i watched a random video a few months ago talking about "Town".
Also: A MINER named AXE.
(i know because pickAXE but still, i though he was a lumberjack)
I am so sad that Drill Dozer is a forgotten one-off now. I was hoping for a sequel or remake of some sort for ages.
Man what the hell, I was listening to Castle Superbeast at work and Pat was telling Woolie about this review, then it's at the top of my Recommended list when I get on TH-cam?
The editing was really strong Clemps
I didn’t even know Game Freak made anything else other than Pokémon
They made "Harmo Knight", I know that shir because one day I was searching games I offer, and that day I was with the intention of downloading weird demos for games, I found some really good and cool games and then that thing come out and I was like "Wait... _gamefrweak_? But, they can do something beyond Pokemon? I have to see this... Omg, the gameplay is so simple and bad, and this level is basically imposible or bad designed!!!"
Really, they don't make more games because they can't.
@@juanrodriguez9971 Pulse man and Drill Dozer were one of there unique platformer games. However Tembo the badass elephant and Giga Wrecker were just decent GF games.

Ah yes Ryza's battle animation @13:22 truly is captivating.
I respect you going out of your way to point out the positives in the game depite not being happy with the game. It’s a good balance and I also understand how easy it can be to get into pure negativity when talking about something, it takes real effort to break out of that habit. Great vid as always my dude
This makes me want a turn based RPG version of a Town Defense, which are usually Tower Defense games.
I mean a good one.
What do you mean up to an hour and a half Clemps? That Final boss took more than 2 hours and a half and still induced the entire Chat with Mindbreak. And ultimately was only defeated by game deletion!
I knew Toby Fox did a song for Pokemon SWSH but I had no idea he did _an entire soundtrack_ for Gamefreak already
I'll be honest, I didn't even know that this game had come out already.
Oooooh boy. No, judging by Sword and Shield, they weren't suffering from funds or resources. They just think it's good enough.
13:25 Five character animations during a battle? Woah that's so cool imagine if pokemon had that.
lmao
I haven't even played the game and I probably never will. But just hearing you talk about the RNG makes me cranky. It just sounds like the only thing you need to beat the game is luck and patience, with no planning and minimal strategy involved.
You banged it. Congrats on 100k!
15:51 I have a feeling that (going off of Clemps' Twitter) Melonie would've been added here if this was edited at a later point.
Thank you so much for the Doug walker edit. Truely a blessed video.
Oh wow, I kinda forgot about this game, I didn't even know it was out yet. It's weird I was really looking forward to it too, that initial trailer kinda sparked my interest, but properly looking at it now it really doesn't seem that different from the original reveal. Oh well, I loved HarmoKnight so here's hoping for another one from that series
A classic case of half-arsing two things instead of whole-arsing one thing (at a time).
That Nostalgia Critic reference made.me think there was a cameo happening
Thank you for remembering this. No idea how your video ended up in my feed but you have my sub!
"The whole game reeks of cheapness."
This single quote is basically Gamefreak in a nutshell lately, and it's very disheartening.
(I do like that they try to do non-Pokémon stuff every now and then tho. That's always nice, even if the attempt flops)
You know I think this video exemplifies your greatest strength, Clemps - Positivity. Its goddamn rare for people to deliberately choose it.
GameFreek is only good in 1 thing - designing creatures.

It's from a TH-cam video called "91 Year Old Grandma Guesses Pokémon Names" or something like that. You'll find it simply by searching "Grandma guessey Pokémon names". It's a really cute and fun video :)
They put all effort into little town heroes and half baked pokemon
OOH LOOK! No animation variety, just like their other newly released game!
Clemps, it’s insane you don’t have more subscribers honestly. I love your content so much. Always brings a smile to my face! Thanks for everything you do! :)
Pokémon is THE largest grossing franchise in the world, topping Harry Potter, Hello Kitty and the MCU. They should be able to fit every existing 3ds model they have into 2 switch games. This should be a simple task when you're a billion dollar company and you have Nintendo AND Creatures backing you up. They put 800+ pokémon in sun & moon, plus mega evolution, z-moves and walking animations. What is the 3ds doing that the Switch can't? I know the Switch has its limits, but I doubt the national pokédex exceeds those limitations. By being lazy and not taking full advantage of what the Switch is capable of, they're making Nintendo look bad. We get to be angry and voice our opinions because in the end we, the customers, are the ones who decide wether or not a game succeeds. These are $60 games, how long do we have to settle for disappointment? Who wants to pay for watered down, dissatisfaction? Every generation of pokémon games has had every pokémon from every generation prior encoded into the game data, except for lets go. I really hoped that gen 8 would restore the order that go and lets go have disturbed and put my fears to rest... but the opposite is happening. Lately, it's been very hard (for me, personally) to maintain being a fan of pokémon. I'm very unimpressed. Their movies are crap, their games are lacking, the anime has become ridiculous... everything that they pinch out of their assholes is lackluster, lately. Mewtwo strikes back EVOLUUUUUUTION does NOT need to exist at all. Go integration in sword & shield is completely unnecessary. Apparently, they thought they did something right with lets go. I still don't understand why they would feel the need to simplify an already extremely simple game like pokémon for the sake of casuals. The overworld sprites in the Wild Area are underwhelming, as is the background scenery. There's nothing too special about the Wild Area other than camera control, which is a simple feature that they could've implemented into the entire game instead of just one limited area. "Dynamaxing" and "Gigantamaxing" are sorry excuses for scrapping mega evolution. Even lets go had limited mega evolution... Those derpy excuses for pokémon games had mega evolution!!! AND FOLLOWING POKÉMON!!!! All sw&sh have going for them is the fact that there's going to be new pokémon and, for some odd reason, the new pokémon are being designed to replace existing pokémon (like Mareep & Jumpluff) that won't appear in the Galar region. Skarmory and Honchkrow as well... they killed 2 birds with 1 Corviknight. Why is that? And why are they reusing the exact same 6 year old assets from sun & moon in sword & shield? And if they had to remake every model from scratch, why would they make them the exact same? They're reusing the same models and the same animations for pokémon and trainers, the only difference being that they've been retextured. This is true for battle and camping animations (with the exception of some slightly repositioned heads). I thought they were cutting all of these things out of the games to make way for "higher quality animations". Their poor excuses simply cannot be backed up by any truth. Graphically, I see no difference between gen 7 and gen 8. It's hard to see any real differences between the two, actually. Sword & Shield lack their own identity, there's not much that sets them apart from previous entries. Just like Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield aren't going to be all that they could've been. I was expecting the next games in the style of Sun & Moon to be gen 4 remakes, not the next new generation on a HOME CONSOLE. If they weren't going to be innovative on the Switch, then they should've stayed on the 3ds a little longer instead of cutting corners because they jumped into something they couldn't handle. I really think that GameFreak and The Pokémon Company© need to reevaluate their business strategy and get their priorities straight. Pokémon's potential is being wasted and these games are being rushed and botched because of the ignorance and idiocy of their developers. Pokémon "Sleep" is a gigantic waste of time, money and resources. It's a shame how epic and ambitious Pokémon Masters looks compared to sword & shield and it's just an app on your phone... It even has mega evolution and z-moves as well as new pokémon battle animations and even a new battle style. It would've been alot better if it was an actual spinoff game on the Switch that you could buy a physical copy of. It could've been compatible with pokémon home and could've been the answer to the national dex problem. That would've sold alot more units than lets go and the game's animated trailer would've made alot more sense. GameFreak's priorities are all over the place but sadly not in the right places. They're focusing on mobile games because they are unable to make a real game with a lifespan longer than a year, due to a lack of content and drive. Switching their focus from the main series console games to mobile spinoffs because of the "popularity" of pokémon go has resulted in a drop in quality in the main series. And lets not forget that "Town" is, somehow, their main priority above all and is the main contributor to this shortage of quality. They're understaffed as it is and they still chose to devote the majority of their time and energy to a risky new ip. Pokémon should be their priority. Everything from the cards and merch to the movies, anime and everything in between, including the mobile games, ride on the back of the main line games. They would not exist without them. This unwillingness to make advancements and improve upon things in the main series could affect the overall profitability of the pokémon franchise as a whole. Of course every pokémon game will sell nicely because there will always be a plethora of indiscriminate consumers with no standards ready to throw money at anything pokémon related but milking "nostalgia" and catering to genwunners and the younger, trend bouncing noob demographic can't get them by forever... Especially when more and more sacrifices are being made in the process. If they gave themselves more time and hired more staff, if they cared more about creativity and innovation and if they were motivated by customer satisfaction and not money, they would achieve greater long-term success. But GameFreak's decision to limit the pokédex for their own convenience and them giving priority to "original" titles and putting pokémon on the backburner, (as if pokémon isn't what made them what they are today), tells me that they don't care about their fans or the product. The only thing they care about is how much crap they can push out each year to make the most money they can in the fastest, cheapest and simplest way possible. Even if it means cutting corners. They are a money driven corporation, who throw quality and real fan service out the window and no one can convince me otherwise. They disgust me.
Slow down dude, that's too much text and I say this as someone who writes a lot.
The Magma joke was really damn funny. Great review!
The really sad fact about Gamefreak right now is that they can't even be bothered to innovate their flagship series beyond, GO TO GYM, CATCH POKEMON, ELITE 4, THE END!
They did inovate with the newest generation!
Mankey’s paw…
God I love your editing. Makes your videos such a joy to watch
This seems like a very good example of marketing myopia on Gamefreak's part
