A mate of mine lived in a German city in the 1980s, where he met a German ticket inspector in one of the local Irish pubs, who had problems with the Irish fellas working there because whenever he asked them for their ticket on the trams, they would claim not to be able to speak German or English, only speaking Irish. Once he was taught the phrase, “Cead isteach, le do thoil”, the game was up :)

I knew Dermot when he was in school and he entertained us royally on the way up Trees Road coming home from Oatlands College. He was a comic genius, but not everything that a genius does survives the test of time. Ronnie Drew seems to be very embarrassed with all of this.
